This is at odds with business needs, very usually. So it doesn't surprise me that you feel people don't listen. Very few business are making money trying to pursue perfect software or quality software - if any.
Like security, trying to be perfectionist won't move any business need/project forward as we all have the real world to deal with, constraints on time / budget / scope are part of decision making
I'm usually more interested in solving business problems, then I work on industries or companies that are doing interesting things. I've worked in the hardware industry, cloud start ups, visual effects, and now AI.
I feel very satisfied pushing those industries forward with technology, basically the technology being a means to an end.
I usually join the company as some senior dev (more recently already joined as snr mgr) and end up in leadership roles - which seems to be at odds w. what you want.
I read on a sign “travellers from Europe this way” and I thought ok my flight came from Spain I’m going that way … when I saw I was out of the airport with no immigration whatsoever
In hindsight it obviously meant if you’re European (which I’m not), I was in shock how easy someone could get in the UK !
e.g: consul-template pointing to consul or puppet looking at some gitops repo
His mom died poor.
Crazy country.
And then make it a very opinionated/hatred/political avenue. Maybe of a right wing group.
Not saying it has happened, or that it looks like that. But it can happen very easily.
Everyone was talking about C++ optimizations, mutex everywhere etc - which was in fact a problem.
However.. I seemed to be the first person to actually try to debug what the database was doing, and it was going to disk all the time with a very small cache.. weird..
I see the MySQL settings on a 1TB ram machine and they were... out-of-the-box settings.
With small adjustments I improved the performance of this core system an order of magnitude.
That's very interesting. Hadn't thought about this PoV. LLMs definitely /can/ empower the wrong kind of behaviour, just like SEO did... and they amplify it a lot by not really showing sources.
Thanks for sharing the thought
I then used many of his ansible playbooks on my day to day job, which paid my bills and made my career progress.
I don't check youtube so I didn't know that he was an "youtuber", I do know his other side and how mucH I have leveraged his content/code in my career
Jeff has many useful OSS software used by many companies around the world daily - including mine. What have you created ?
It got very political everywhere too, which I assume gets clicks and are a favourite of bot farms
just three possible examples
can be a bad time due to industry shanigans
