approxim8ion··on KISS Launcher – fast launcher for Android
that's ap15 launcher. It's a good one!
approxim8ion··on Ask HN: Windows/Linux software that has no real equivalent on macOS?
MacOS has a frustrating tendency to depend on external utilities for basic functions, but I've found Maccy to be as good as if not better than Windows clipboard manager. You can summon it with a keybinding or click on an icon in the menubar. It's really good and one of the first things I install on Mac.
approxim8ion··on Using static websites for tiny archives
HTML supports video just fine and has for years. Can't imagine why it would be an issue.
approxim8ion··on Using static websites for tiny archives
Facebook does (or at least used to when I left it a few years ago) this too. They give you a huge dump of your data and photos, with an html file to help you navigate it better.
approxim8ion··on U.S. court orders LibGen to pay $30M to publishers, issues broad injunction
The majority of these "mom and pop e-commerce stores here in the states" are dropshipping enterprises that deserve to die.
approxim8ion··on Ask HN: What are some must-read books about video games and gaming history?
Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made, by Jason Schreier

Not particularly deep, but a pretty good read about more modern AAA games and crunch in the industry.

approxim8ion··on Google: Angular and Wiz Are Merging
Yeah, that makes sense I suppose. My Java background also means the verbosity and structure doesn't bother me much.
approxim8ion··on Google: Angular and Wiz Are Merging
To offer a differing experience, I've been working in Angular for a couple of years now and personally like it quite a bit. I don't like frontend frameworks in general, but given the choice I prefer Angular over React.
approxim8ion··on The Case Against Homework
I'm glad it worked out for you, but this is also survivorship bias.
approxim8ion··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)
Bob and Brad ("the two most famous physical therapists on the internet") are an absolute treasure. Always good to see them get some appreciation online.
approxim8ion··on Ask HN: What's the book that people in your field pretend to have read?
CLRS or some Algorithm Design Book, but you could easily be talking about TAOCP or SICP or Clean Code or any of 1000 other books.
approxim8ion··on Java 21 makes me like Java again
We made the jump from 8 to 17 this year! Some of our developers of course still write 1.6 level code, of course
approxim8ion··on Sweden brings more books and handwriting practice back to its tech-heavy schools
Where I studied, every classroom had a blackboard and a projector, with the rollable white screen just above the board. When you show slides, roll out the screen. When you need the board, either use the portion beside the screen or roll up the screen if you don't need it at all.
approxim8ion··on Mistakes You Should Never Make (2014)
Move fast, break things, pretend to be sorry about breaking things, move fast away from the broken things, keep at it as long as there's someone else left holding the bag.
approxim8ion··on Mistakes You Should Never Make (2014)
Ten years later this company, its product, the money that went into it, and most evidence of its existence barring this post and another article covering it, seems to have vanished into the aether.

The author of course seems to be doing fine at some VC firm. Just so you know what kind of behaviors Silicon Valley rewards.

approxim8ion··on No app, no entry: How the digital world is failing the non tech-savvy
Because they're talking about their experiences with QR Code Menus, the majority of which are the way I described them.
approxim8ion··on No app, no entry: How the digital world is failing the non tech-savvy
The problem is that most of the time a "QR Code Menu" means a QR code pointing to a PDF hosted on Google Drive or alike, a digitized version of a paper menu which was never meant to be read on tiny phone screens and is a pain to read with no reflow. You have to squint at your screen to figure out what you want, and then the rest of the process is the same, someone comes down and takes your order.

What you presumably mean by "QR Code Menu" is a QR code pointing to a website where the content is optimized for screens and perhaps interactive, allowing you to order from your table without involving wait staff and thus streamlining the entire ordering process for you and the restaurant.

approxim8ion··on Ask HN: What's a good, privacy focused bookmark manager?
I use OneTab, it is perfect for me, with the caveat that it has no categorization or sync, neither of which I really need.
approxim8ion··on People Hate QR-Code Menus. Now Restaurants Are Ditching Them
This has always been such a misguided little thing.

Print out as many menus as you have tables, laminate them and use them for years.

or,

If you're going QR code, go all the way. Specific QR code for each table that links to a site that lets me order for my table from my phone itself. Don't link to a bloody PDF that doesn't reflow ffs.

approxim8ion··on Intel One Mono Typeface
They offer a "JetBrains Mono NL" variant where the NL is for No-Ligatures. I use it daily on Eclipse.
approxim8ion··on Incognito ChatGPT with no account required
Seems like it's treating each individual message as a new thread?

> I got guns in my head and they won't go

> Spirits in my head and they won't go, I been looking at the sky 'cause it's gettin' me high...

> what song is that?

> As an AI language model, I cannot determine which song you are referring to without context or further information. Could you please provide me with more details or lyrics related to the song?

approxim8ion··on Elon Musk states he will resign as CEO
I'm going to leave the job I'm not qualified for but hold on to the jobs I'm even less qualified for!
approxim8ion··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
Does it wield well if the person involved has a healthy mix of both incompetence and malice?
approxim8ion··on Infosys leaked FullAdminAccess AWS keys on PyPI for over a year
In another comment, you ponder whether it is a "cultural problem". Yeah, sorry, but it absolutely is.
approxim8ion··on Infosys leaked FullAdminAccess AWS keys on PyPI for over a year
It's good old-fashioned racism.
approxim8ion··on Evernote to be acquired by Bending Spoons
Thanks for sharing! The state of application development is rather sad, that screenshot just conveys a feeling of speed and efficiency to me that is lacking in modern software.
approxim8ion··on Apple Execs on iMessage for Android (2013)
the battery life on the new SE is dreadful from day 1. Everything else is broadly true.
approxim8ion··on Ask HN: For simple layouts, do I need CSS Flex or Grid?
I prefer flex, but that's just because I'm more used to it, and I work a lot in angular where the angular-flex-layout shortcodes reduce effort a lot.
approxim8ion··on ZLibrary domains have been seized by the United States Postal Inspection Service
I suppose then we would need systems to verify that your payment is going to the intended recipient. Sure, that can be spoofed non-trivially too, but I'm sure it's possible to make it good enough without being perfect.
approxim8ion··on Ask HN: What web framework for Java worked for you and why?
Jersey and SpringBoot have both been quite decent for me.
