appendix-rock··on 200GB Free Cloud for Your Files
I regularly use may in a way that doesn’t mean “will”. Sorry that you had a bad experience or whatever.
appendix-rock··on ByteDance is abusing the free video downloading service Cobalt for mass scraping
I feel like you’re missing the point on purpose? Cobalt is asserting that it’s doing good based on the shadier behaviour of its competitors. But can you justify Cobalt in isolation any more than you can justify whoever was scraping it?
appendix-rock··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
I’m genuinely not sure how to say this without a little bit of snark, but do you…know how fashion works?
appendix-rock··on Correcting the record for Continue and PearAI
So, “it was a shit show” was “the recruiter ghosted me”?
appendix-rock··on Why and how we’re migrating many of our servers from Linux to the BSDs
What!? Changing implementation details is not “abusing trust”. Where would you even draw the line with this attitude!? Should I be informing my customers whenever I update the version of left-pad I have installed!?

appendix-rock··on Why does man print "gimme gimme gimme" at 00:30? (2017)
The no-Easter-egg attitude ‘won out’c sure. There’s not much else you can conclude from that, though. Not even that it’s the popular opinion.
appendix-rock··on Why does man print "gimme gimme gimme" at 00:30? (2017)
Yawn. I’m all but certain that all the environments in these “print debugging fail” stories have debuggers. The fact that generation after generation of programmers fall into print debugging, despite there being “no reason” to do it in many contexts for…decades at this point, should tell you that you’re missing something, not that everyone is dumb except for you.
appendix-rock··on Google's AI search summaries officially have ads
And how do the reviewers find out about products? Please give these things more than a second of thought before saying them.
appendix-rock··on Google's AI search summaries officially have ads
This is hilarious. You’re using Y Combinator’s advertising and propaganda board as we speak.
appendix-rock··on Why Gumroad Didn't Choose Htmx
Yeah, without having the foresight to know that Hacker News would come after them with very disingenuous interpretations of what they’ve shared, because HN commenters are so used to spending all their days having internet arguments that they take everyone as a personal attack.

Nothing in this post indicates that the author doesn’t know any of what all these people in the peanut gallery are snarkily lecturing about, FFS. Working in the open must be so difficult.

appendix-rock··on Google won't be mandating a strict return-to-office plan
Don’t worry. Most people here that “run their own business” are in VC-funded startup la la land anyway. It says very very very little about knowing how to actually productively steer a group of people.
appendix-rock··on Google won't be mandating a strict return-to-office plan
That’s just, like, your opinion, mahn. I don’t recall anyone else saying that those things were OK, or that they were comparable, which they aren’t? Your MO seems to be to just make your comment so high-effort to reply to that nobody will bother.
appendix-rock··on Ask HN: What happens to ".io" TLD after UK gives back the Chagos Islands?
Oh be quiet. That’s a ludicrously uncharitable interpretation of what they were saying, all in service of you…getting to be…snarky?
appendix-rock··on A subtle change to the iPhone’s contact-sharing permissions
No it doesn’t. It’s a faulty analogy. I’m pretty sure that burglars don’t give you a choice. You choose to use a social network.
appendix-rock··on A subtle change to the iPhone’s contact-sharing permissions
This attitude always utterly frustrates me. I simply don’t understand it. Is your view that a company’s worth should be determined by how quickly it copies any random feature introduced by a ‘competitor’?

Do you understand that if every person that voices these complaints had things ‘their way’, then Apple’s collective development backlog would be filled to the brim with stuff that’s utterly original?

And, if Apple had done it as soon as GrapheneOS did, can you honestly say that you wouldn’t still be complaining about Apple copying things?

What would actually satisfy you? All this OS culture war BS aside, is what you’re expecting of Apple here even remotely in line with your professional experience?

appendix-rock··on Cups Remote Code Execution Vulnerability Fix Available
You’re conflating power and proper practice. “Yeah, well, they’re allowed to” is a comment that’s never, ever worth making, because EVERYONE already knows it. The need to always kick up a fuss about “doing whatever I want in my land” always feels like a weirdly American reflex that’s always a little ignorant of the context of the actual discussion taking place.
appendix-rock··on Don't build your castle in other people's kingdoms (2021)
Nobody said that this happened? The commenter is pointing out the faulty absolutist suggestion of the clickbait title.
appendix-rock··on Juno for YouTube has been removed from the App Store
This sort of tribalism is utterly insufferable. “The good decisions? They were us! And the bad ones? They were made by those idiots over there!”
appendix-rock··on What happens if someone votes by absentee/mail-in and dies before Election Day?
Yup. Precisely. A lot of election ‘security’ relies on this premise.
appendix-rock··on Show HN: A macOS app to prevent sound quality degradation on AirPods
Yeah. Every single time.
appendix-rock··on Show HN: A macOS app to prevent sound quality degradation on AirPods
No.
appendix-rock··on Show HN: A macOS app to prevent sound quality degradation on AirPods
“Do you have any empirical evidence…”

Ask yourself, “how easy would it be to test this myself?”

Now ask yourself, “how hard would it be for someone else to prove this and give me something that convinces me?”

Even people working in academia don’t say “show me empirical evidence!” This just feels standoffish.

If someone I employed said that something “is a full-time job because I need to keep myself familiar”, I’d really have to hold in my laugh of disbelief, to say the least. You’ve taken the “people should pay ongoing for ongoing work” discourse and applied it beyond the degree to which most intend. Even if I wasn’t already using a perfectly adequate and free menu bar application to do exactly this, there’s no chance in hell that I’d ever see an apparent lack of documentation ability as justification for an ongoing subscription for this.

This is all ignoring the fact that you’d very likely need to maintain this application in its entirety to continue scratching your own itch.

I pay for a lot of software, including subscriptions. I am almost always happy to do so. This is a rare occurrence where it comes across as a piss-take.

appendix-rock··on Too much efficiency makes everything worse (2022)
That wouldn’t be worthy of the front page of HN. “I don’t like the current tradeoffs that laptop manufacturers make” has been talked through to absolute death. It’s the opposite of interesting.
appendix-rock··on Too much efficiency makes everything worse (2022)
For some it may go without saying, but for the uninitiated, y’all should be reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goal_(novel)
appendix-rock··on Too much efficiency makes everything worse (2022)
Love myself some cybernetics! All engineers are doing themselves a disservice by sitting here writing smooth-brained rants about “dumb MBAs making my job hard” instead of reading up on this field and understanding the true complexities that are inherent in people working together.
appendix-rock··on Apple's homework is due Monday no matter what, says judge
Would you mind amending your comment to refer to the part of OP’s comment that you were actually referring to? Because I can’t for the life of me work out how what you’ve said remotely refutes anything they said.

Classic whatbaoutism, which is especially absurd when the comment started off with saying that Apple is certainly not perfect. They made their specific point.

appendix-rock··on Apple's homework is due Monday no matter what, says judge
You’re a broken clock that happens to be right. This isn’t “superfans protecting them”-Apple, it’s “lawyers protecting them”-Apple. Don’t conflate whatever leftover feelings you have about 2000s OS flame wars with whatever inane shit Apple is up to in 2024.
