apolymath··on Ask HN: What were/are you doing at age 25? What would you change?
Strange, I'm 35 and I feel like I can write code faster than ever, I have started many more open source projects in the past year than in my whole career, and they are in late stage development at the moment. Also, I'm about to launch my first mobile app, developed in React Native. At the age of 35, I am more responsible & less distracted than I was at 25.
apolymath··on Ask HN: What're your most favorite developer tools and why?
Visual Studio 2017 + VS Code. One is used for ASP.NET Core development & Unity development, the other is used for React Native mobile app development. God, I love being a developer
apolymath··on I'm bored, what do I do?
I spend 12+ hours a day writing code for open source projects that I started, many of which are very innovative projects. I spend my time learning, documenting everything I do, building tools that I want to use so that I can build other tools with those tools. If you are bored, it is because you have a sense of entitlement. "The world exists to entertain me", you may think. "I exist to entertain the world" is how you should be thinking.
apolymath··on In 2018, Windows died at home and nobody cared
what a load of crap. Windows is the only OS that can play modern PC games reliably. There are millions of homes with Windows 10 PCs, and your article sounds extremely desperate.
apolymath··on Ask HN: Very tense while programming
I use deep breathing exercises. My jaw does hurt from time to time, though. I don't care cause I love to write code!
apolymath··on Ask HN: Turning 40 soon – seeking personal and professional life advice
BS you have every choice, you’ve just given up. Get out of LA! Go somewhere where people will treat you with respect, somewhere beautiful where you can explore the wilderness, somewhere where the pay is good, somewhere like Bellevue WA.
apolymath··on Ask HN: Effective methods to fight depression?
Try physical work if you don’t like to exercise without purpose. Perhaps maybe get a night job waiting tables or doing something outside your comfort zone. Get out, talk to people, fight depression by fighting your comforts! Stop eating processed sugars & foods. Cook all your own meals. Find someone on Instagram to look up to (body builder, The Rock, super models, anyone!) have goals you know you can achieve and ACHIEVE THEM! Learn a martial art, do deep breathing exercises, meditate, yoga, go into the wilderness and listen to the silence. Just don’t sit in your comfort zone and play pity party games by yourself. No one likes a victimizer.
apolymath··on The End of Windows
Last year I had a 45” 4K screen with 150% scaled UI and was able to develop in VS code with two code windows open side by side, all with the crispiest text I’d ever seen. It’s the dream.
apolymath··on The End of Windows
A 4K screen with 150% scaling is liquid smooth and other-worldly
apolymath··on The End of Windows
Most corporations can’t afford to upgrade hardware and most likely run on very old hardware running windows xp or if they’re lucky, windows 7.
apolymath··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier
all lies. hacker news is one of the greatest reasons why i have learned so much about the world and all of its possibilities. news, good or bad, is worth learning about. swallow your pride and learn of all the truths in this world, be humble and overcome all obstacles with applied science and always be true to thine self.
apolymath··on Ask HN: Which new tech stack on side project?
Use React Native for the mobile app part of your project :)
apolymath··on Ask HN: Is there an equivalent to jQuery Mobile in 2017?
I built one just for that purpose, www.github.com/websilk/selector
apolymath··on Ask HN: Wrist pain and recovery
I purchased a device called the Ultimate Zapper which has completely eliminated any joint pain I've had throughout my entire body, including extreme wrist joint pain & lower back pain related to my career as a full stack web developer. It cured the pain within 48 hours of using the device, and it has so far had permanent effects.
apolymath··on Ask HN: How do you deal with incompetent Tech Architects
Unless you cared deeply about the company & software, getting fired was probably the best outcome.
apolymath··on Ask HN: What's the gravest lack of professionalism you've witnessed at work?
Our project manager constantly complaining out loud about how our female clients are "cunts" & "bitches" on a weekly basis, in our open office of 10+ designers & developers (two of which were female designers). Talk about killing morale...
apolymath··on Ask HN: What are your Hobbies?
* Skyrim modding * Cyclocross * Music production * Player Unknown's Battlegrounds * Developing a drag & drop CMS * Smoking Weed * Boxing * Texas Hold'em * CrunchyRoll (anime) * Aggressive Inline Rollerblading * Mobile app development using React Native * .NET Core
apolymath··on As a full time hacker how do you manage your health
I use a device (http://zap.intergate.ca/) before going to bed, which induces electroporation & destroys harmful organisms living in my body. I ride my bicycle 5 miles to work & 5 miles back home every day. I limit my caloric intake to less than 1,500 per day. I drink a lot of water and also teas that reduce stress.
apolymath··on Ask HN: Best development environment? (June 2017)
laptop, headphones, fast wifi, Visual Studio 2017, comfortable chair & sturdy desk. Will work anywhere with that criteria.
apolymath··on Ask HN: How much time per week do you spend on side projects?
about 20 hours per week, says RescueTime. I also work 10+ hours a day, 5 days a week at a full-time job.
apolymath··on Show HN: Selector.js, a jQuery replacement weighing in at 4.75 kb
Looking through the javascript portion of Bootstrap, I would have to say that it may not work. I haven't fully tested the $.extend method yet, and since Bootstrap extends functionality of jQuery, it may not work. But I intend on working on that while keeping the gzip filesize of selector.js under 5kb.
apolymath··on Show HN: Selector.js, a jQuery replacement weighing in at 4.75 kb
hhmm... That would be a good test. I'll see if it works :)
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
It's okay, I don't mind being downvoted. Haters hate.
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
Yea now that Microsoft is on board with open source, my list of tools have stagnated as well. Visual Studio, C#, Javascript, LESS, Gulp, SQL Server, Git. That's about all I need... No front-end Javascript frameworks, no React, no Angular, no Knockout... just beautiful, clean, vanilla Javascript... and C#.
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
I can't believe you taught yourself quantum mechanics! I thought for sure that was something only a serious physicist could do. Now that gives me hope in my own potential :)
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
yea that project is dead... i should fix that. Thanks for the input!
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
Hmmm... I'm using a Surface Book Pro, 3000x2000 resolution, and the site looks fine for me. How does it break?
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
Lol, no that is actually a mugshot of my ugly face. I swear. And the post is legit. I really did not graduate high school because back in 1999, the internet was exciting and school books were just a waste of my time. And then I got my first job as a web developer, building Flash websites. Exciting times.
apolymath··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
I get hired all day, people bang down my door after im hired, and all I do is explain the tools I used each year. I never graduated high school, never went to college, never really built anything that I can show off. I just talk about the tools I use. thats it. www.markentingh.com
apolymath··on Happiness is a Boring Stack
omg this guy is on spot. My day job is Magento (hell), but I am absolutely in love with boring ol' C#, along with the new ASP.NET Core framework & Kestrel web server. All of my side projects are built using C#, and I don't use jQuery or Angular or React or Reactive. I use plain old vanilla javascript, because I care about zero HTTP requests & zero bloat & zero BS.
