aperrien··on The quest for a reactionless space drive
Because, unfortunately, some people are just jerks, and will troll for the luz.
aperrien··on Study shows brain interface between humans
Some conjoined twins can actually pass thoughts to each other through connected brain tissue. Since that is in no way planned, I'd reason that a link initiated while the brains in question have high plasticity would likely work.
aperrien··on The Other Side of Diversity
You can help by attempting to break your coworkers of bad habits. There's enough to joke at about the nature of code and system administration that they don't need to joke about ethnicity and sexism, too.
aperrien··on How My Employer Put the “FML” in FMLA
As you said, nothing is free. If you refuse to pay for the upkeep of the society that you are part of, you can either leave, or be removed from it.
aperrien··on How My Employer Put the “FML” in FMLA
> (3) Unlike something like cancer pregnancy is not an accident. If you can't afford to pay for children, don't have them.

It's not an accident, it's merely one of the foundations of any healthy society. I'm willing to part with a bit of our collective wealth to help raise them.

aperrien··on Artificial arms get closer to the real thing
That's incredibly interesting! If you can treat cells to receive signals on one end, and transmit them on the other, then can you then use some sort of optical fiber to possibly branch around damage along a nerve path? As they say, the internet routes around damage. Can we do the same with our nervous system?
aperrien··on Artificial arms get closer to the real thing
You know, I've seen all these neural interfaces that connect electrical impulses to nerve cells, and I wonder: why aren't we using optogenetics to connect them instead? it would seem to me that using light to penetrate the skin rather than metal would make for a much longer lived interface, since you wouldn't have to worry about the body rejecting the metal. Is there some reason that's not used?
aperrien··on Robot writers collect and analyze data and turn them into readable narratives
I'm interested in when narrative writing software will incorporate this: http://0xab.com/research/video-in-sentences-out.html

That will be a sea change in event coverage, in my opinion.

aperrien··on We Are Entering the Age of Alzheimer's
The semantics of "your suffering brings my life meaning" are particularly vile.
aperrien··on The PostScript web server
This reminds me of a time in college where we hacked an HP print server to add chat services to it... Good times.
aperrien··on Will Fusion Energy Ever Come Together?
I'm no expert in this, but from what I've seen, most of the small players are working on variants of aneutronic fusion[1] a method that reduces the quantity and energy of the neutrons that come out of the reaction. There you have Polywell Fusion, Tri-Alpha Energy, and Lawrenceville Plasma Physics (Who are supposed to be running tests on their device this month).

There's also Helion Energy[2], which is a YC startup, but their process seems to involve some sort of magnetic reflectivity from the fusion reaction.

aperrien··on Will Fusion Energy Ever Come Together?
It depends on the process. Some of the plasma focus devices being experimented with create electricity directly from the ionization process.
aperrien··on Will Fusion Energy Ever Come Together?
I'm kind of disappointed. This article discussed almost none of the dozen small-scale fusion projects out there today. Coverage of them along with the fission companies that were covered would have made for an excellent article. Especially as some of them are running experiments now.
aperrien··on Transmitting binary information from one person’s brain to another
You know, I've always wondered why, in edge cases like this, it's not standard to run the patients through fMRI to detect whether or not the patient is actually conscious before just consigning them to a bed with no interaction. Or am I mistaken, and this is routinely done?
aperrien··on Camouflage sheet inspired by octopus
What's the difference between this concept and e-paper?
aperrien··on Let's Build a Traditional City and Make a Profit
Why not make a housing sandwich? (of sorts)

Like this:

Road/Parking___Housing/Shops___Greenway/Park___Housing/Shops___Road/Parking

It costs a bit of land, but the area would be much nicer.

aperrien··on Workaholism in America Is Hurting the Economy
You know, for all these horrible employers, who is it that is loaning them money to start these businesses? How are they able to persuade others to loan them money to start this madness?
aperrien··on Workaholism in America Is Hurting the Economy
I don't believe in American exceptionalism. I do however, believe in exceptional Americans.
aperrien··on Stephanie L. Kwolek, Inventor of Kevlar, Is Dead at 90
I would not be around mucking with code today if not for this woman's work. May she rest in peace.
aperrien··on With 'The Machine,' HP May Have Invented a New Kind of Computer
You can produce memristors on the macro scale[1], in fact, it appears that any pair of oxidized conductive metals will work[2].

aperrien··on Bring Reading Rainbow Back
I really, really, wish I could buy this tv show. Is it still broadcast anywhere?
aperrien··on A new book compiles knowledge necessary for society to recover after disaster
You might want to check out James Burke's "Connections" series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connections_(TV_series)
aperrien··on How to Lie with Data Visualization
It can also depend on what is the easiest thing for you to hear. Take a look at this article: http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2014/04/14/america-the...

It's disturbing how much we look to confirm out preset biases.

aperrien··on Nvidia releases $3000 Titan Z
About how many FLOPS is this thing? The specs portion of their webpage doesn't cover that, and I'm curious about using it for CUDA purposes.
aperrien··on Sony and Panasonic announce the Archival Disc format
Any idea how much it costs to have a disc pressed? For some things of mine it might be worth it.
aperrien··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
And this is why all police officers should be wearing badge-cams with the video feed removed from their (and the department's) control.
aperrien··on Are passwords stored in memory safe?
Like this technology?

aperrien··on I've been programming since I was 10, but I don't feel like a "hacker"
Perhaps someone like this?

http://pando.com/2014/01/02/from-coding-to-the-catwalk-this-...

I'm not really saying we need to promote pizza and staying up all night coding, it's that we need to maybe make it more inclusive, to encourage more people to join the tech party.

aperrien··on I've been programming since I was 10, but I don't feel like a "hacker"
What gets held up as an ideal gets followed, especially as children, when we're looking to establish our identities. I wonder if promoting a more diverse image of "hacking" to be included in other hobbies will help. While programming has always been a passion of mine, I also like astronomy, travel, and politics. Perhaps there should be discussion of how to change the practice and culture of programming to be one that more children can follow if they desire?
aperrien··on Scrap the Welfare State and Give People Free Money
A weapon for self defense as a last resort is fine, but I'd also want a good social net as well. The problem with self-reliance for security is that eventually, you must sleep.
