apercu··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
Isn’t that part of the llano estacado? The Comanche lived there just fine.
apercu··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
Being incarcerated and having very little control over every aspect of your life IS punishment. The violence, sexual violence and extreme conditions are not necessary.
apercu··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
Still too high of a rating.
apercu··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Have any data that the savings are passed on to the consumer? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't see any modern, late-stage capitalism companies doing anything that actually benefits the consumer.
apercu··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
I know exactly one person who has a 3D printer. I would argue strongly that “most households” do not in fact have a 3D printer.

RoW = Rest of World?

If so, those constituencies are immune to facts and common sense.

apercu··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Also the GOP. They stopped being "conservative" a long time ago and became performative terrorists.

Re: ChatGTP - Mars says the answers were “almost always wrong.”

I know it's sports ball, but it's still humorous.

apercu··on ImpactGate: A merge gate that scores the structural decay AI adds
I've never encountered that term before (cohesive erosion) but I like it, if I'm interpreting it correctly.

Do you mean like the hyper focus an LLM puts on the task in front of it so you end up with drift (duplicated concepts/multiple ways of doing things, terminology drift (e.g., now we have "customer" and "client"). That sort of thing?

apercu··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
More expensive and worse in most ways. Just like most things in the current stage of oligopolies.
apercu··on Audacity 4.0
I’ve gotten a few of those “lite” version license cards over the years but had already invested in logic.
apercu··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
I was on a public highway.
apercu··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
The constitution was written centuries ago and its authors expected the founding documents to be routinely updated.
apercu··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
Surreal in that I’ve only dealt with that sort of thing (army checkpoints) in places that have active armed military conflicts.
apercu··on I haven't lost a customer service fight in seven months
I despise this sort of tax on our time as consumers. It’s getting to the point that someone should run on the “if you wanna do business in the US and you’re not going to employee citizens as customer service reps you pay a 1% dividend on your revenue to all US residing citizens annually” platform - and then we use this to help fund single payer healthcare :)
apercu··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
Isn't there a difference between getting picked up on someones Tik Tok "broadcast" and a private/public surveillance operation?
apercu··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
Probably selling data to CBP/DEA. I went through a combined military and police checkpoint a bit north of Rio Hondo last August and it was surreal.
apercu··on Music Theory for Programmers
I'm sort of the opposite - when I can name something, then play it, then I can hear it. E.g., going from minor third to major third to root. I can't "unhear" that in blues-based music now. But before it had a "name" it was just an interesting sounding "thing" that didn't pop out to me in any specific way.
apercu··on Anthropic & friends caught paying religious NGO's 3.3M for propaganda
There definitely is a prosperity gospel in America that is increasingly influencing our politics.
apercu··on Audacity 4.0
I used Audacity decades ago (2006-2010) but when I stopped buying PCs I always found there was noise on a Mac so I switched to logic.

I always thought audacity was great, and still prefer its workflow to slow tools or logic. I haven’t ever tried Reaper however.

apercu··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
Taxes are disproportionately applied. We have more than enough taxes on working people and not enough on the wealthiest classes.
apercu··on Urban Congestion Pricing and the Response Times of Emergency Medical Services
A significant portion of modern professional jobs can be done remotely and this has been true for decades.
apercu··on The Harness Is the Thing
When using LLM's to help write things like tutorials, how do you reduce the verbosity firehose?

Even though I use MD/skills and other methods, I have remind models that they are not paid by the word multiple times a day.

apercu··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Thanks. And yea, my PR was in 2004. Citizen now but living in the US again.
apercu··on Australia Bans Generative A.I. From Official Music Charts
Mine is a different issue - I've produced hundreds of specifications over the years and it's obvious that implementation teams don't read them at all before they are "approved" because I never get questions or comments until it's time to build.

Now, granted, I'm an experienced software developer in my own right, and I know that sometimes you aren't giving something full attention until you need to, but my experience is that it's different than that.

You are correct that in identifying the issue - but that's a separate one from what I intended. I cannot stand sycophantic LLMs and use methods to get rid of any anthropomorphizing they do. But I feel like I'm somewhat outside as a person whose life is far more analog than most.

I just hung some laundry outside. I'll be (manually) splitting some firewood later today. HN is my ONLY social media.

apercu··on Australia Bans Generative A.I. From Official Music Charts
The only point I would disagree is that I do find LLM's to be useful.

I am only "forced" to use them as a matter of staying economically competitive against my competition, but I do find it like having a second opinion or a way to force myself to express my thoughts.

And, finally, it's good that someone (something) actually reads the specifications that I work really hard to produce ;)

apercu··on Stripe acquires Clerky
I feel like I am repeating myself a lot lately, but I think that the "middle class" of software/tech companies is being eroded as fast as the middle classes of North American societies. The oligarchs just buy everything since they can no longer innovate.
apercu··on The Harness Is the Thing
The thing about consulting is that someone needs to verify the output, know what questions to ask in the first place, and provide a throat for the client to choke in the event of an issue. Also, professional insurance. I could be wrong but in the worlds I live in professionally, accountability is still a thing.
apercu··on U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications
I did it 20+ years ago and I had to “land”. They’ve relaxed a lot of immigration rules since then so it might have changed.
apercu··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
But does America have a trade imbalance with Canada?

Canada has things that our economy needs desperately (e.g. potash).
