If owning & profiting from capital is impossible, what incentive is there to produce capital - it will just get seized. Where's the marketplace for capital, or does the state have a monopsony on capital purchases?

I agree. The article the GP posted posits that they are equally wasteful, but ignores the fact that:

- The thing that they are wasting, capital, was created out of thin air by the act of switching to PoS

- There are large negative externalities to burning power by mining with hashes, which increase the cost to society of using PoW vs. PoS.

Ok this article seems to be willfully ignoring two advantages of PoS:

- Liquidity and capital-over-time that you have to “burn” (which makes PoS just another type of PoW) is actually capital that was fabricated from thin-air. So while PoS is not less wasteful, the act of switching-to-PoS is a gigantic act of wealth-creation.

- A much bigger point, relevant to the future of humanity on Earth: there are externalities to PoW which makes mining cost more to society than its $ cost to the miners. Instead of lobbying to include those externalities in the mining cost via various pollution taxes, we can sidestep it entirely by doing PoW with something that doesn't do physical damage to the earth: PoS.

Not necessarily - maybe a mixed strategy of

(1) Not creepblocking at all, and letting your opponent have your creeps under their tower

(2) Modest creepblocking to punish (1)

(3) Severe creepblocking to punish (2)

Would be better than some hand-trained RL creepblocking which is divorced from game outcomes.

No, because you don't cost the govt anything. You don't use any public services in the USA, you use the public services where you live. You're paying for literally nothing but a passport.

You can still leak information from your backtested time series by choosing WHICH algorithm to use out of a large pool of algorithms. You'll get regression to the mean because you optimized for a noisy signal (backtesting performance) of future earnings.

This is a great tip. I'm going to start using this.

In this case, it isn't fair - the externality is pollution, but the fee is unrelated to the emission levels of the vehicle. But even such an inefficient system is still superior to doing nothing and letting the public suffer the externalities.

Isn't depressant just the opposite of stimulant? I don't think it has anything to do with depression the syndrome.

Nuking Japan could have been done like this:

1. Warn them we have nukes

2. Nuke off the coast of a major city so everyone can see what's going on

3. Demand their surrender.

4. Nuke a city if they don't surrender. Wait for them to surrender before continuing...

I agree with you - but there are two advantages to giving perks like food:

No transaction costs. Not just the actual monetary cost of the transaction, but no need to employ people to man registers, no need to wait in line to pay. And more subtly, no need to argue with yourself about whether it's worth it to buy the item you are consuming.

Secondly, these perks are bought in bulk and provided without having to pay income tax on them. So it's just cheaper than paying people more and having them buy the goods.

That being said, I do wish there were more healthy options by default.
