anuraj··on What India Is Doing To Stop Cheating At Board Exams
There is nothing called India Board Exams - Each ethnic state has a board which conducts exams - and the surveillance is different for each.

But all boards agree and exist for the rote learning model which leaves no scope for creativity. kid in, zombie out!

anuraj··on Edmund Thomas Clint
I don't know if Clint drew 25000 artworks in his lifetime (that looks astonishingly huge number), but he was indeed a prodigy well known in Kerala from a very small age (3 ish if I remember correctly)

A bit superlative (philosophical bent for a 4 year old!) but this video shows some work and photographs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoOPJ1w76I8

anuraj··on An open question (rant) about Node.js
In browser content may need to be asynchronous, but HTTP is request/response - nothing asynchronous. Half the web (or more) is not about feeding the browser. Use asynchronicity where needed.
anuraj··on Russia Blocks Access to Major Independent News Sites
Independent News Site? That is News!!!
anuraj··on Dear first world dev, I am going to live your nightmare
Agreed - but the Northies are using Lungies too in Kerala :)
anuraj··on Dear first world dev, I am going to live your nightmare
Kerala has a dearth of manual labor. There are 2.5m Northies working in Kerala as manual labour today - I am talking about their wages only.
anuraj··on Dear first world dev, I am going to live your nightmare
Construction workers in Kerala make 20000 a month - would you move and do that work?
anuraj··on European Commission proposes a reform to the way the Internet is managed and run
The biggest threat to internet is from governments. Time to think of an independent, autonomous internet that is dynamically formed and cannot be controlled or monitored by design
anuraj··on Taking PHP Seriously
Thanks! We should have some code that can be made open source. Will check if it contains any PHP. Mostly because we work with Businesses and host solutions for them on the cloud, our code base is not yet open sourced. Should try to do that in the future. In the mean time, I would be happy to help out if you have some specific requirement.
anuraj··on Taking PHP Seriously
As long as you keep your design to short lived HTTP requests in CRUD fashion - and no deep nesting - It is possible (REST is really procedural in its core). In fact, I would suggest the model for any scripting language. That do not mean you cannot use OOP SDKs for which you can make calls within procedural code. I typically use Java for complex logic which is mostly run as cron/long lived process often with multiple threads. My CRUD files rarely exceed 1000 lines of code and do not do any UI heavy lifting (left to HTML/JS). I use AWS and SDKs wherever applicable to remove heavy lifting from my code and keep things stateless as possible.

In the past 2 years we have developed a Mobile Companion Platform for TV which scaled to many hundred thousand users, a scalable appstore for TV, a Middleware Platform for HTML/Android Set Tops, a mobile Live TV platform and a Campaign Management System for TV. I find it exceedingly difficult to manage and scale containers and would not use them for anything other than strict enterprise stuff.

Our platforms typically have 80-100 CRUD APIs and finish within 10000 lines of PHP with heavy lifting delegated to cloud APIs and Java based crons/long lived processes.

anuraj··on Taking PHP Seriously
I came to PHP after long stint with C, C++, Objective C, Java and Javascript - and I was productive from day 1. I have programmed extensively, and have come across few quirks, but never got stuck, nor is my code spaghetti. I do not use frameworks where they can be avoided and write extremely simple code and avoid OOP for scripting. I would not do OOP with a language without strong typing. My take is for short lived HTTP requests which need to spew out some JSON preferably(favor headless coding for frontend), PHP is the apt tool. For heavy lifting, use a strongly typed language which can easily handle complexity.
anuraj··on India Manages to Free Itself of Polio
First Polio Free district in India is in Kerala. We have not heard about any Harsh Vardhan here. Last Polio case in Kerala was reported in 2000 (For few decades before itself, cases in Kerala were extremely rare). World wide polio eradication was a project by WHO with a target to end the disease by 2000. Indian Government adopted this project with WHO help. Do not understand how Harsh Vardhan (do not know who he is!!) can start it. Though India is late, it is commendable that it finally achieved the goal.

anuraj··on Can you start a successful tech career later in life?
Would be difficult to say the least, especially if you do not have a STEM background. As PG says, at least 10 years hacking experience is the minimum bar. But if you are an innovator/marketing genius and can muster a tech team, you can definitely be a successful founder.
anuraj··on Malicious Use of the HTML5 Vibrate API
HTML Popups have always been a problem and with re targeting the Ads are a menace. And some clever spoofing is definitely possible. A proper ad/popup blocker for native browsers would help.
anuraj··on Malicious Use of the HTML5 Vibrate API
Since HTML pages cannot open up by themselves, and user can navigate away, the risk is lower compared to a native app which can do far more damage. Never the less, permission mechanism should have been enabled.
anuraj··on What I Didn't Say
PG has put what he said in perspective - and everything boils down to quoting out of context. You want to be an A class founder - try hard - there is no shortcut even if you are a woman.
anuraj··on Ask HN: Let's predict. What's your prediction for 2014?
Retail Indoor Locationing (aka iBeacons) and their applications in stores will become mainstream. We are moving towards the intelligent store that talks back to you and offer personalized service.
anuraj··on I Got Myself Arrested So I Could Look Inside the Justice System
Criminal justice system as it exists has lots to answer 1) What is the purpose? 2) Is it getting achieved 3) What kind of people are administering the system 4) Why biases exist? 5) What should citizenry and political authority do? 6) Ultimately - what is the true conscience of the society?
anuraj··on 24th Birthday: What it’s like to be 24 for a Software Engineer in India
I am from south of India - In Kerala, my state, marriage is a 30ish affair. 20s is the time to explore, experience, learn and experiment. Nobody but you can stop yourself from achieving your dreams.
anuraj··on iBeacon Pioneers Estimote (YC S13) Raise $3.1M Seed Round
Congrats Estimote - We recently got the developer pack and implemented an Android SDK for the same, and the motes are handy. The calibration is a bit off for each mote, and thus location accuracy is a bit compromised. Hope the production version will be better calibrated.

We also have a similar SDK that works over indoor WiFi, though the accuracy is definitely better for the BLE beacon.

anuraj··on The Problem with Paypal's Node vs Java Benchmarks
You are actually trying to bench mark asynchronous vs synchronous code - and the result is obvious. More relevant may be pitting node against vert.x for example - and node should not be faster than vert.x for most cases at least.
anuraj··on Moving forward on improving HTTP's security
Very good idea - will make snooping and tracking impossible. So end of targeted ads. If we can now snooze the surveillance regime as well - all the better.
anuraj··on What's wrong with Object-Oriented Programming and Functional Programming
Use the tool that is apt for the job. Programming languages and paradigms are tools. Tools are not greater than end products - period.
anuraj··on Scaling Scala vs Java
In the past few months, I have found the relative simplicity of vert.x trump play where ever an asynchronous framework needs to be used. And for everything else, there is the Servlet API.
anuraj··on Why Twitter's IPO is Bad for Startups
CIL is a publicly listed company though govt is the biggest shareholder. You are right about the private part.
anuraj··on Why Twitter's IPO is Bad for Startups
Just a correction - Coal India Limited (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_India_Limited) is the largest coal company in the world - not Peabody Energy.
anuraj··on Microsoft Earns $2 Billion Per Year From Android Patent Royalties?
I would think Steve clearly saw the onslaught coming up and probably had an early director part as well - By end 90s MS had become a benefactor to Apple and both were no longer threats to each other. The enemy now was Google and its plans of global domination - I suspect, Steve - the master mind that he was saw the merits in ganging together against a common enemy.

It was common knowledge from early days that Android infringed on several OS and mobile patents. Also note Andy Rubin sold Android predecessor - Danger OS to MS along with all IP. It was just a question of when and how the IP assertion happens.

anuraj··on Microsoft Earns $2 Billion Per Year From Android Patent Royalties?
Android is not fully open source nor are critical components of mobile firmware including base band and graphics code.
anuraj··on Microsoft Earns $2 Billion Per Year From Android Patent Royalties?
Apple has a cross licensing agreement with MS, done at the time of Steve Jobs.
anuraj··on Science has lost its way, at a big cost to humanity
When you make publishing a number of papers mandatory and tie it to tenure, it is inevitable that quality will suffer. The need is to rethink quantitative metrics and move to a more quality oriented one.
