antupis··on Leaving LinkedIn
it is fine the first 6 months then bore out hits and you will be miserable.
antupis··on Leaving LinkedIn
I think it is more nuanced, you can also change the organization bottom up, but it needs to be new stuff that does not exist or has it infancy. Changing existing stuff is very hard even top-down.
antupis··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
yup, I hope we get awsome open source-related content now.
antupis··on Memory and new controls for ChatGPT
It is not that much about censorship, even that would be somewhat fine if OpenAI would do it dataset level so chatgpt would not have any knowledge about bomb-making. But it is happening lazily so system prompts get bigger which makes a signal to noise worse etc. I don't care about racial bias or what to call pope when I want chatgpt to write Python code.
antupis··on Wall found at bottom of Baltic Sea 'may be Europe’s oldest megastructure'
And it still changing pretty rapidly https://highcoastkvarken.org/our-joint-world-heritage/the-la...
antupis··on How Venus ended up with a mini-moon named Zoozve
Radiolab has the kinda same problem that Star Wars has. It is so influential that groundbreaking stuff has become an industrial standard so now the product kinda feels stale.
antupis··on Is the "modern data stack" still a useful idea?
Yup, it is not perfect but I will take dbt every day against the old way as some random DDL files in git.
antupis··on Is the "modern data stack" still a useful idea?
Testing and monitoring in every aspect are the only things that are greatly lacking, you always need to glue something together to get nice tests or some kind of data contract monitoring.
antupis··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
yup same here, I think subscribing 'works' but Google just botched the launch.
antupis··on EU coal and gas collapse as wind and solar ascend
Methane stays only 12 years in the atmosphere versus CO2 which stays 300 to 1,000 years.
antupis··on Balancing engineering cultures: Debate everything vs. just tell me what to build
Yup pretty much this but you need to grind that $0/day work that you see right problems.
antupis··on Culture Change at Google
both had slump but I think Facebook has been much better shape after Zuck did layoffs and pivoted away from metaverse. Llama and Meta Smart Glasses both feel like groundbreaking products.
antupis··on Culture Change at Google
I think there are two ways. The first is basically what good sports teams do (or Netflix at least was doing) where you continuously fire people who don't perform wanted at levels but also do very rigorous hiring and pay very well. Then there is cut fast and deep and shuffle organization at the same time which also works if you do that when needed and very rarely like once in 10-15 years Facebook might have pulled this and the company looks like it is in much better shape than Google or Amazon.
antupis··on Ask HN: 9-yo son wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?
you can also make games with Scratch eg https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/888899999/ . Another option is Replit that also has plenty of games ready https://replit.com/community/games
antupis··on What Happened to GE? (2021)
It is fraud when you don't tell that openly and pad books by it, but it is an okay tactic as a hedging risk as long as you are open about it.
antupis··on LinkedIn ad prices up as X plummets
There is unfollow button which works very well and changes your experience somewhat. Of course it does not matter that much because most LinkedIn content is rather bad.
antupis··on 27 years ago, Steve Jobs said the best employees focus on content, not process
Also depending on country there is tax and social security payments which companies dont have pay when they are buying consulting.
antupis··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
Chatgpt3.5 is good enought if can give context in query.
antupis··on The worst kind of programmer
Usually when you are starting an actual new project that kinda throwaway is a very good way to understand business needs and problem domain.
antupis··on The worst kind of programmer
Also, it is much slower than just shipping the code. I prefer working with a pair or a team but sometimes you need to ship often and fast.
antupis··on Make Ethereum Cypherpunk Again
I think it is speculation if you invite large-scale speculation then you hit some unexpected consciences. Just look at housing or cryptocurrencies.
antupis··on Reindeer sleep and eat simultaneously
If I am on vacation or in some other relaxed environment, I will go into a state where I sleep 6 hours at night but also take a siesta or 15-minute to 30-minute nap in the middle of the day.
antupis··on More product, fewer product managers
Or they are super into weeds polishing stuff in code level but it is never between those two approaches. Also very good pm can be kinda shackled if there is lots of mediocre pms running around.
antupis··on Possible to detect an industrial civilization in geological record? (2018)
You can always use peat.
antupis··on Maybe getting rid of your QA team was bad
“release it fast and patch it later” You are testing just different things eg is this product viable in the market? QA has its place but you should not cram it into every corner of software development and also the same time, not everything should be "release fast and break things".
antupis··on Mitchell reflects as he departs HashiCorp
Is there somewhere a list of these big stuff that launched in the HN, eg this and Dropbox https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8863 .
antupis··on Mistral's mixtral-8x7B-32kseqlen on Vercel
This is first model that gets this puzzle right

“three missionaries and three cannibals must cross a river using a boat which can carry at most two people, but these are nice cannibals so they don't eat people under the any constraints, for both banks, if there are missionaries present on the bank, they can be outnumbered by cannibals (if they were, the cannibals would not eat the missionaries). The boat cannot cross the river by itself with no people on board how to solve this?

antupis··on Code is run more than read
You usually don't want work companies that do resume matching.
antupis··on Code is run more than read
I think learning some narrow skills is fine but the real issue comes when you don't deploy code to production. Because Production is the best place to learn actual problems.
antupis··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
Studies show that you want those daylight hours to morning less depressions and sleeping problems.
