antris··on Using GDPR to obtain one’s data as JSON
Well, if all the decisions are given to the AI, it's harder to establish mens rea. They can just claim they never intended to discriminate anyone but that it was only an "unfortunate glitch" in the system. Of course, this defense might not hold, but AI is a decent legal cover as it's more difficult point to any single person knowingly doing anything illegal.
antris··on Using GDPR to obtain one’s data as JSON
In that case there is a human being who is legally responsible for the decision that is made. I have no problem with that. If the person is "just nodding", with possibly illegal consequences, that person can be sued.
antris··on ‘Belonging Is Stronger Than Facts’: The Age of Misinformation
What was the lie? Fauci said his honest opinion based on the facts and situation at the time. He didn't comment on whether the masks work.

Fauci said whether people should be wearing them because of covid at the time, when there was a shortage on them and they were yet unproven for use in the general public. On the other hand, it was proven that masks need to be used by health care workers, and that the public has proven options in dealing with viruses: hand washing and social distancing. It makes perfect sense why health officials would advise against an unproven method, especially considering the shortage on PPE. Now that the shortage has passed and new evidence has come to light, of course the stance changes. That's how time and research works.

And what ever you think about Fauci, this is OT because Fauci is not a representative of the media. Unless your argument is that the media shouldn't cover what US top health officials are saying during a pandemic?

antris··on ‘Belonging Is Stronger Than Facts’: The Age of Misinformation
>The way Obamacare was sold to the public, which was highly deceptive. See ACA architect Jonathan Gruber’s comments about how it passed because of the voters’ “stupidity.”

Parent comment was talking about media, not politicians. So, not really related. Unless you think media shouldn't cover what the POTUS and their team says about the bills they're proposing?

> The CDC telling us not to wear masks because they wouldn’t help

Source? At the start of the pandemic many health officials said that there is no evidence that masks help (which was true), but the fact that there is no evidence is different than saying that they definitely don't help. Meanwhile emphasis was put on hand washing, social distancing which had plenty of evidence. Of course it makes sense to promote those practices over something that isn't yet proven.

Now that we have data on the pandemic, we have evidence, so that was presented. But please, if you have a link to a source where CDC says masks don't work, please provide.

>Pretty much everything the media reports about race.

Just "about race"? I assume you are talking about racism, race relations or something, because it's not like there's some constant outpouring of news about new races being discovered or something...? If you don't specify any further, it's easy to assume that you're just another person who's upset that people of color have at least some voice in the media nowadays

antris··on ‘Belonging Is Stronger Than Facts’: The Age of Misinformation
When you've got people in high places of the government who talk about jewish space lasers, turning around and talking about problems with "the media establishment" in general - as if that's the problem is just disingenuous. Not only this top comment (???) on the thread hasn't even defined who or what this "media establishment" is, it doesn't say what they have done. It's easy to hate something so vaguely defined that everyone can project that one experience when they remember some media fumbling a story that one time.

Yes, journalists have always made mistakes and always will. There just hasn't been a 24/7 outrage machine, professional "alt-news" grifter industry and conspiracy pipelines on such a scale before that highlights "that one thing" they got wrong and squeezing all the juices out of it again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again... People like Steve Crowder know that outrage creates clicks, clicks create money. And if they make a mistake in their "DIY journalism", they already have made 30 videos about the next thing to be outraged about so people have long forgotten.

I was replying to a post that praised Discords UX. I agree, it's mostly excellent, but there are points that deserve critique, which prompted this response.

If you feel like that's whining, well, as an UX designer I'd welcome feedback on what could be improved.

antris··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
Well that seemed to erase the "red dot without number" problem, but it still seems I get "red dot with number" that I have to go manually clear even when it's obvious that nobody has mentioned me.

Anyway, thanks for the tip

antris··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
I want to change my global settings, not server settings. I'm on dozens of Discords and join/leave them and change their order on the sidebar all the time. Going through each of them (and remembering to do it every time I join a new one) sounds like a nightmare. Every time I hear/see a notification that I don't want, I'd have to go through all those dialogs for all of my servers? Nope, not gonna happen.
antris··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
Have you ever tried to disable notifications on Discord? I have tried to do it 500 times and still get those annoying red dots with numbers, red dots without numbers, and just a few weeks ago I started getting random notification sounds (after I had disabled them before) without any clue where they were coming from.

My only option is trying to disable all notifications and all notification sounds everywhere, but still I get those dots even when I'm not mentioned.

edit:

I think the root of the problem is that Discord is trying to game the user attention/retention/time spent in app by flooding the user with notifications. In IRC, you had to explicitly enable every notification, otherwise you'd never get notified of anything. "Disable everything by default unless I turn it on" seems to be made as difficult as possible on Discord.

antris··on Parler's home page is back online, but app still not in stores
In general "conservatives" seem to have a harder time following TOS on hate speech, bullying, racism, sexism etc.
antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
Yeah, fair enough. I'm just worried about these kinds of statements going unchallenged.

>Trump never called for any violence

Alright, so finally after a few seemingly innocuous arguments you took your mask off. A person who believes storming the Capitol was not organized by Trump at this point would be able to find a justification to anything he says or does.

antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
"BigTech has gone nuclear with censorship" immediately after a coup attempt is a wildly different statement than "there is a long-running political double standard that exists in tech companies when it comes to enforcing their TOS". Should I take take it that you have conceded your previous statement?

I would like to complete the discussion on the previous point before moving on to another topic of discussion.

antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
Nah. The water infrastructure at my home isn't owned by a private company. I live in a state that has this radical policy that water is a human right and should not be commoditized.
antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
It's more akin to "no shirt no service". Parler can continue using Amazon if they moderate their platform, you can put on a shirt to get a cake. You cannot change your sexuality or skin color.
antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
>If internet service providers can shut down speech they disagree with, by going after the servers, then we're no longer living in a democracy.

You present this as if Parler is being shut down because people there have the wrong opinion on tax rates.

People on Parler are planning violent fascist overthrow of government, which is illegal. Why would Amazon be obligated to host sites that cater to terrorists?

antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
Having your message broadcasted through Twitter is not a human right or essential to your survival. Also, what kind of TOS would a water company have that you can break? This example is ridiculous.
antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
Sure, but the parent poster seems to imply that banning people who incite violence on social media is somehow a new thing or "going nuclear" with censorship.

Trump got clapped not because of censorship, but because social media platforms decided to no longer exempt him from their TOS because of his position. Any normal person posting similar content would have been banned ages ago. Besides, he is the POTUS who can go on TV any time he wants. Thinking that he cannot get his message out there is ridiculous.

antris··on Cabal: A peer-to-peer, off-grid, community-first, hackable chat platform
>BigTech has just now gone nuclear in their censorship efforts

Who's being censored? Twitter, Facebook etc. are private platforms and they've been banning users who break their TOS throughout their histories.

>Were it a left wing protest, the National Guard would not have been delayed by the federal executive

If it were a left wing or minority advocate protest, the response would have been the same as with BLM protests:

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/07/us/police-response-black-...

The double standard is striking.

antris··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
>Including the violence by civilians (whether we call them protestors or not), the leftist protests did lead to a lot more bloodshed. I misunderstood and thought you were talking solely about the police.

I was. Most of the victims during the protests were black. You cherry picked quotes from the article to support your views.

The reality is that a peaceful BLM protest was dispersed with greater violence so that the president can pose across the street with a bible, than a mob attacking and storming the Capitol.

19 dead in 2 weeks, without any aggression even close to what happened yesterday. It's obvious that the death toll would be higher if BLM protestors were as aggressive as the Trump protestors yesterday.

antris··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
Fascists want to use laws against their detractors whenever possible, but also want none of the law apply to them.

The USA could be a dictatorship if Trump were just slightly smarter.

>A bunch of idiots roaming the capitol building isn't a threat per se, shameful and sad yes, but not one that should've been met with violent force from a small number of capitol police at the expense of (and risk of not) evacuating the people inside.

Of course, if the mob were leftists or had any significant amount of minorities mixed in, there would have been rivers of blood outside the Capitol.

antris··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
I really have no idea of the specifics between different states and timing in the USA. I live in Finland, so here's what US looks like from here since February:

- leaders downplaying the virus

- no top-down leadership in tackling the virus

- masks made political

- hundreds of thousands of people dead

- media focused on wedge issues and Trumps fantastical statements while people are dying

I do not live in the US and I don't for a second believe that everyone is anti-mask there, but judging from the outside looking at your numbers and media coverage, your whole attitude towards this deadly disease seems f'd up. I don't mean to direct this as an insult to the American people, more as a criticism towards the cultural and political attitudes surrounding this crisis. Anti-maskers of course are not solely to blame - nobody is - but they certainly seem to play a huge role culturally when compared to other countries.

antris··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
Anti-maskers made masks political. Even people who aren't anti-mask themselves can be surrounded by a political atmosphere where wearing a mask can be construed as a political message.

Also, people can get demoralized in their personal efforts when they see mask wearing as a "divisive" thing that is a matter of opinion, and when they see other people, especially public leaders not wearing masks themselves.

antris··on No-kill, lab-grown meat to go on sale for first time
Well, I think it is both. I find it quite cruel to kill animals. Even more cruel to breed animals just to be able to kill them later. It's quite a twisted moral towards a sentient being. No animal wants to be killed.
antris··on No-kill, lab-grown meat to go on sale for first time
I thought the whole point of cultured meat is that it is the exact same product? It literally just as much as meat as a meat cut from a whole animal, just without the rest of the animal. Therefore it would be just as safe as meat cut from an animal.
antris··on Facebook Is Going After Its Critics in the Name of Privacy
The difference is that you can throw unlimited money to guarantee to get eye pairs. The one with the most money will get their message across best. And also the advertising is part is much easier to regulate. We already have loads of regulations and limitations about advertisement, so there would be no problem adding one more.

Unless FB is in on the scam, you cannot buy eyepairs on the platform.

antris··on Facebook Is Going After Its Critics in the Name of Privacy
> You cannot avoid targeted advertising, hell, all advertising is in one way or another targeted

But there's a drastic difference in effectiveness. No one would support private ownership of nuclear weapons just because everyone has fists which are weapons also.

Hyper-targeted advertising has gone off rails recently and when you can simply buy your way into any specific segment of the population without having to put it under public scrutiny, you are asking for trouble.
