anton-c··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
Not gen z but I just don't drink(i worked in clubs and didnt like that scene either). I think there's a growing portion of gen z that is like that if I recall what I've read correctly. They drink less.

I genuinely don't know what to do in my smaller suburb where the verbs aren't "look" "eat" or "drink". I wanna do. Museums are mostly boring to me, there's little interaction. I don't meet people at the library or gym. The volunteer things ive done had a weird gap where younger people and older people have more free time than middle aged workers and parents so I had few peers at those too.

I'm open to any and all ideas. Feels like things never truly changed back after covid as far as community events and social opportunities.

anton-c··on Stop selling “unlimited”, when you mean “until we change our minds”
During the tide pods craze I saw that they were less than 20% of the market. Just a heads up. Most use liquid detergent.

Original posters autotune example was off too - 99% of commercial records use pitch correction. The other 1% are the ones they write stories about "nO AuToTuNe" cuz the reality is its on everything. I mix records. Easy to find autotune errors in live performances on youtube. It's not that they can't sing, the audience has been trained for perfection(they believe).

anton-c··on I saved a PNG image to a bird
Just watched this last night. That bird "the mouth" is beautiful and incredible. Love Benn Jordan's insane content.

If you watch some of the other vids it does a perfect r2d2 impression, don't recall if it did it in Benn's.

anton-c··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
Also if a website is terrible or the article is suspect, the top comment is usually going to be addressing that.

Yet I too often am looking for the discussion. When I see there's high quality discourse or valuable experiences being shared, I'm more likely to read the full content of the article.

anton-c··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
Because they like to make stuff more than they value a subscription. I'm gonna write music no matter what happens to it.
anton-c··on Apple's Liquid Glass: When Aesthetics Beat Function
As a typeface and legibility enthusiast I obviously have my problems with it.

I've found that in the creative work I do, lots of things moved away from skeuomorphism too far. Yes it's easier to read the text on a flat black background with all the controls in a grid. but you lose some intuition compared to when it actually resembled a hardware unit that has logical places for things.

I'm in the market for a new vehicle so I'm particular interested in that last line: which companies are bringing back physical controls in cars?

anton-c··on Python audio processing with pedalboard
Seems better than the absolutely crazy custom one I made myself when I was like 22

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dJG5IMOVYmI

Also just normal computer footpedals that were like 34.99 worked great for controlling the software if there's extra things u still need to assign

anton-c··on We have made the decision to not continue paying for BBB accreditation
They mean inherently I think. As in it doesn't enforce any "better business" practices. The only threat is public shaming through them. But they themselves won't actually solve it.
anton-c··on AI is killing the web – can anything save it?
Wow. I'm dealing with too many mental health problems to have that optimistic an idea even form in my head. Awesome take. I miss those days.

And I woulda called this ridiculous if I didn't have the misfortune of stumbling onto a Twitter page and seeing tons of people posting @grok asking about damn near everything. I didn't realize it had gone that far. I hope you're right!

anton-c··on The U.K. closed a tax loophole for the global rich, now they're fleeing
> the wealth tax was based on assumed returns rather than actual returns

That does sound poorly thought thru. Why not just calculate it instead of "assumed returns"? Seems unfair on its face and bound to go wrong.

anton-c··on Ask HN: Where do you guys find audiobooks?
GP didn't state they were detoxing they asked for book recs. One or two reddit posts shouldn't send them into the doomscrolling abyss.
anton-c··on Ask HN: Where do you guys find audiobooks?
Not many people seem to feel the same about spotify which is a shame. Pretty bad at paying artists.
anton-c··on Ask HN: Where do you guys find audiobooks?
Ask in the subreddit of the genre? Those are some of the more mature subs usually.
anton-c··on Don't Fall for AI: Reasons for Writers to Reject Slop
If it's AI art/vid with an AI voice reading an AI script(as has become common on youtube) it will always be slop, regardless of how high quality the output is.

I want to know a person's ideas, not a computers regurgitation of others'. It's low effort and usually lacks a point.

Now it doesnt have zero usefulness in writing/the arts. Probably tons tbh. For instance someone using AI voice because they aren't an English speaker and want to talk to that audience, or using it to clean up grainy film is different (in my opinion) than genning the writing or art.

Things made without enough human in the loop - I've found - lack purpose and identity. I dont see AI changing there. If it wasn't a good idea from the start, ai isn't gonna fix that. No amount of awesome cgi or a-list actors saves a terrible script.

The only people I see pushing stuff like ai music is spotify so it doesn't have to pay royalties, but everyone I speak to hates it. The listeners, artists, and the record labels those models stole from. Probably instrument and audio software makers too. When people figure out a pic is AI they voice frustration and embarrassment.

There's more in the word 'slop' than just bad content. Comments/posts on here or reddit often get slaughtered solely because it was written by AI and the user wasn't skilled enough to hide it. Some people just don't like reading something a machine trying to sound like a person wrote.

I don't doubt we will advance to the stage where it becomes on the same level quality-wise, but doubt most people would be wanting AI content while human made stuff is available. It will still be considered low effort slop by many, I believe.

anton-c··on LIGO detects most massive black hole merger to date
I can't even understand how supernovae emit like "more energy than than the sun over it's entire lifetime"

Just... how? I get what happens with fusion but the numbers are so mind boggling. And it makes what seems like a terrifying ball of fire appear as a space heater in comparison. It's nuts. The GW thing you mention is near incomprehensible to me.

anton-c··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
That's fair. When I put "I would say" followed by "in reality" it means I don't fully support it.

The previous comment said they don't find F that useful since they aren't familiar. I am, and I dont find it that useful for predicting how it actually feels outside. Celsius doesn't change much for me in that situation.

anton-c··on Reading Neuromancer for the first time in 2025
The old "Seinfeld isn't funny" one on tvtropes.

I find it's easier to get in a time period with visuals compared to a book, but it is a forgivable thing for later generations to 'not get' either way. I certainly don't know all the musicians who influenced the musicians that influenced me.

anton-c··on Hypercapitalism and the AI talent wars
Does every democracy have that problem with bills? I thought it was mostly a US issue.
anton-c··on Bold Mission to Hunt for Aliens on Venus Is Happening
This is one of the reasons it's fascinating to me. We often talk about Mars but Venus is truly our sister planet. But it turns out she's a raging hellhole, the sulfurous evil twin of our lovely planet. Crazy stuff.

The fact that - as the other comment mentions - life could potentially survive in the atmosphere is incredible too.

anton-c··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
> Not sure how one would objectively determine "stamina", but my resting HR is in the bottom 3% for my age.

It's not testable at home but if you're curious, google VO2 max.

anton-c··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
I don't have a specific thing to back it up but from my exercise science degree(in another life) men are at a greater risk for pretty much all heart/cardiovascular problems.
anton-c··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
I think it's a shame avoidance and marketing effort. It's not flattering for a man to admit he thinks he has low testosterone. Easier to talk about.

There is some fake shit no doubt, but you can have real problems that lower it. Kills dudes motivation, libido, etc and that kinda spirals towards depression sometimes. But it's not meant for long term use or meant to be given out as willingly as it is.

For casual human use I would say Fahrenheit is one of the more easily defended imperial units since it has more resolution.

In reality hearing its 80 outside where I live could mean beautiful day or sweltering mugginess so it's never been a great indicator for me regardless of unit.

Or when people adjust a thermostat by like 2 degrees. If you changed it and didn't tell me idk if I would even perceive it. Temperature is weird.

anton-c··on OpenCut: The open-source CapCut alternative
I started using resolve last year and while I get it now and my hands know the shortcuts I don't feel it's a very intuitive editor.

Very nice color options though, that part is hard to beat

anton-c··on Reading Neuromancer for the first time in 2025
Not at all. I see why you say that. My general thought of why things more interesting is not that they truly are, rather our time and attention spans have been taken up by more frivolous things while boredom leads to ideas and innovation.

I meant that boredom I experienced earlier in life was arguably a good thing.

anton-c··on Reading Neuromancer for the first time in 2025
I'm putting out a new track on spotify, as soon as i get the master back so I'm excited for that. I'll admit though, not a ton of interesting stuff going on. I mean, I make jewelry, am learning Japanese and do visual art too so I'm not lacking for good hobbies but idk where to meet people these days.
anton-c··on Gaming cancer: How citizen science games could help cure disease
To be honest i agree, idk if I gained a ton of knowledge from KSP(I know what deltaV is now) but man does that stuff - as well as the flight simulators - let you grok some concepts better than any other way. Except actually flying I guess.

Seeing a planet on the map appear close but be invisible, then turning into my whole view really helped me grasp the distance between bodies in space. And KSP is scaled down!

Reading about stalls helps but crashing the tutorial Cessna twelve times really helps you understand what a stall is and why it happens.

Seems you missed the part of my comment where I say I'm explicitly trying to cut down on stimulation. I'm aware.
anton-c··on Let me pay for Firefox
I feel like we would pay and it would get worse somehow
anton-c··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
This is all true. It doesn't really apply to my personal driving situation where I can't recall the last time I personally was on a road with a speed limit above 40. I drive less than half the days a week. Thats part of maintaining control for me. I can't set plane schedules. I can drive when there's less drivers and on slow roads.

Also, there are numerous situations you're leaving out where just stopping(or just slowing down) does solve the safety issue. Far more than a suicidal driver choosing me as their target.
