antoko··on The BBC is turning off its international Internet radio for the Olympics
This is an absolute non-story and a terrible title.

The BBC only has the rights to broadcast the olympic games within the UK. So they cannot legally provide that service outside of the UK. This is the exact same situation with the radio service they provide for the popular English Premier League (soccer), and likely make other events.

As a Brit living in the US I've been well aware of such situations since I moved here in 2002. This is nothing new. This is not specific to the IOC, despite the great lengths they go to in order to enforce their trademarks, and the linked article makes no mention of the IOC.

This is ill-informed internet band-wagoning at its worst and not the sort of nonsense I expect to be upvoted on HN

"Dumb" actually has the same problem as "retarded". We are just not as concerned about the politically incorrect implications to the group of people which are unable to speak.
antoko··on Microsoft Expected To Post First Ever Quarterly Loss In Its History
I think that would just be cult.

antoko··on A Hole in Mars
Pretty cool, not quite the same, since we know what it is.

But thanks for making me spend the rest of my afternoon wikipediaing around on random geological occurrences.

antoko··on Dropbox users' email addresses targeted by spam?
to be fair that wasn't a post by dropbox staff just a random user.
antoko··on Heroku Postmortem of June 29th Incident
Presumably if they were having to deal with a power outage you could reliably assume that that fucking status was set to "not fucking"
antoko··on Mousetrap: Keyboard shortcuts in Javascript
same issue on Win7 / FF13

Also affects the "* a" combo if you release shift before releasing 8 then release 8 and press "a" it doesn't recognize the combination (presumably because its reading a key press of 8 in between them)

antoko··on Double amputee cleared to race in the Olympics
I think that says much more about you than it does the Chinese or North Koreans.
antoko··on Mihai Pătraşcu 1982–2012
The feedback is but his superior tone is unwarranted.
antoko··on Show HN: Guess whether a stock will rise or fall - and get instant feedback
I'm getting the same issue. Also on Win7 using IE9 or FF12
antoko··on Let's Not Call It "Computer Science" If We Really Mean "Computer Programming"
Would be interested to know the course requirements for the CS vs. CS-SE

If they had more relaxed A-level grades for the CS-SE students (or it was under-subscribed and filled through clearing) then the students on the course were just a lower standard of student rather than the course itself being deficient.

antoko··on Confessions of a recovering lifehacker
But how long do you spend setting up the time-tracking process that ensures you don't exceed you 20% time frame in a given day/week/month/year? And don't you also have to track that time as tool-time? How do you even do that without your time-tracking system up and running?!

Facetious, i know - but this is a confessional, the OP is basically saying he isn't capable of separating his time out like that - he would get drawn into the optimization process - like an addiction and blow past he's 20% allotment.

If a person is able to maintain the don't go over 20% of your time on optimization then by definition they aren't dealing with the same issue as the OP.

antoko··on Interviewing at Google, Facebook, Foursquare, Dropbox, Fog Creek, etc
Wow! Did you even read the comment above? The interviewer asked for the source and the candidate responded with stackoverflow.

in this instance that is absolutely not cheating.

antoko··on My Raspberry Pi Thinks It's a Mainframe
You should avoid the whole gender/sex angle and just make some comment about extreme nerdiness.

"I'm a total a nerd and have been all my life I've been on HN for over 2yrs and I can honestly say there's nowhere else on the entire internet where people make comments that even come close to how nerdy yours does!"

That being said it still isn't that funny and it doesn't really add anything to the conversation, but likely wouldn't have offended anyone either.

EDIT: forget to mention kudos for apologizing and not whining about downvotes like most people seem to now.

antoko··on Head of Time Warner Cable Unfamiliar With Apple's AirPlay
Apparently I wasn't fully appreciating what "internet content" is. I was assuming this referred to content that is already accessible through a browser - so yes my daughter wants to show us all something funny she saw on YouTube - we put it up on our TV rather than hunch around a monitor. I was also assuming the discussion was about only accessing that content, not completely replacing the current cable TV model. I agree it is inevitable but we aren't actually there yet. I'm not a big consumer of TV content but I had thought services like netflix and hulu were already taking huge steps in this arena. One (two) of the only shows I do take any interest has been available online for a long time already - Comedy Central's Daily Show and Colbert Report.

I think this situation is going to resolve itself when the generation shifts - I don't think the next generation will ever subscribe to cable the way their parents have, and the perceived tech barrier will be less with the next generation.

antoko··on Head of Time Warner Cable Unfamiliar With Apple's AirPlay
Granted I'm on HN so I'm probably not an "average consumer" in this regard. However new computers have HDMI outs and new TVs have HDMI ins. What exactly is the technical problem with getting internet content on a TV? It is absolutely no different than plugging in an Xbox or other console, and actually simpler than setting up a TiVo or a cable box!

NOTE: I don't actually know how common HDMI outs are on store bought PCs (since I build my own) but surely it is becoming standard?

its absolutely hideous and unreadable to me for any length of time - Salon.com recently did something similar on a redesign of their site. I go there much less now.

I'm fairly certain Darwin was an Evolutionist rather than a Creationist ;-)

Also I don't think the UK really has the same caliber of religious conservatives as the US (I don't recall creationism being a thing there, for example)

antoko··on Paul Graham, the Commons, and How Google Stopped Being Google
Just because something CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done. I think the community benefits from people expressing counter-arguments far more than grey-ing out minority opinion.

I'd hope a majority of users here feel the same way and act accordingly - pg's comments not withstanding.

antoko··on Paul Graham, the Commons, and How Google Stopped Being Google
hmm that might be because we don't use the DMV here in Texas the same way - TxDOT and TxDPS are the two agencies you're going to interface with to handle the stuff that California's DMV does.

I've been in TX 5 years now (and owned a car that whole time) and never even knew we had a department of motor vehicles.

My class read LotF at age 13/14. This was in the UK though, we're not nearly as sensitive to such things :)
antoko··on How I built a startup while working full-time in Finance
While I agree with the points you make regarding the industry The OP answers your question in his post - albeit without directly addressing any of your negative points about the industry.

For whatever reason, this video incited a thought about the power of free music and the power of fans as promoters of the music they love. This concept consumed me.

And...

If you are ever consumed by an idea, focus on that idea and see where it takes you. Your obsession with it likely means that it embodies your passions and values.

Its pretty bad form to claim how well documented something is (twice in 3 sentences) and then just hand wave and not provide any links to any of this supposed documentation.

(I didn't downvote you)

antoko··on I'm a Citizen of the Internet, Where's My Passport?
While all that may be true - (and as a Brit living in the US who has to renew their passport shortly thanks for the heads up on pricing) at $121 for 10 years that works out to be $1 / mo. That actually seems very reasonable compared to my cable bill.

>> inbox is a todo list. >No, it isn't. It's a method of asynchronous communication and file transfer. If you're using it as a TODO list, you're doing it wrong.

I don't think pg is asking for help with his email - for MANY people it IS a todo list. He's outlining opportunities for future startups - email IS an opportunity precisely because people are "doing it wrong" - you snarking like you disagree with him but it seems like you actually agree. He's saying there needs to be a better todo list system for EVERYONE email can still fill the role of asycn comms and file transfer.

>>gmail is slow >it isnt slow for me

Maybe I'm wrong but I assumed he was meaning this to be it takes a lot of time not it has poor performance - again seems like your are just trying to negative.

>> 5. a new apple

>Apple is still on top of the consumer market. Solve problems that need solving in the way you feel is best. Don't work hard to be something else. Apple didn't.

He's talking long term - he's talking about apple when they were in a garage - he's not saying they are dead - he's saying with Jobs no longer at the helm there is less likely to be next generation vision - so again there is an OPPORTUNITY - someone will be the next visionary - maybe it could be you.

>> 6. bring back the old moore’s law >>...it would be great if a startup could make a lot of cpus look to the developer like 1 cpu.

>As an analogy, why don't we make Ruby look like 8086 programming? Parallel computing is different- you can't solve problems with the same mentality.

I don't understand your logic here. PG is talking about abstracting the problem away from the developer - you think the future of CS is that we will no longer make things abstract?! I think PG mentions it because it would be HUGE if this could be done - it certainly is difficult - he's not advocating any kind of mentality - he's just saying there's an opportunity here.

antoko··on Tevatron confirms a 115-135 GeV Higgs
We've always been able to travel to the future, in fact we can't help but do that. Pausing time or going back in it is where the problem-space is.
antoko··on Notch gives his $3,000,000 Minecraft dividend to his employees
So you're not actually questioning the act of giving away the money either? Your point of contention is "Why is he posting this?" ?

That's actually quite an interesting line of inquiry. I'd suggest it probably helps raise his company's profile, it helps draw potential employees to his company, and, admittedly, it also probably makes him feel good about himself - and it should - he's doing a Good Thing (TM) he should be able to highlight that. It cost him $3MM why shouldn't it buy him some goodwill?

antoko··on Notch gives his $3,000,000 Minecraft dividend to his employees
Fine I'll bite,

it is INTERESTING it is different it sparks debate and it gives life to a conversation about bonuses and compensation in our industry. Lots of people here are also founders (or plan to be) so form that perspective it is interesting to contemplate the effects of such a move on early employees, it isn't so different from talking about vesting for early employees in that regard, something which is also a common topic here. I'm not sure why you would choose to make this a personal thing about notch, HN (for me at least when it is at its "best") is a place to come for NEW and INTERESTING perspectives, this absolutely falls into that category - for a number of reasons.

Your response seems to be "wow look at notch trying to draw attention to himself" the impression I have from the rest of the comments here isn't "wow look how generous notch is; he's so awesome" it seems to be more like "wow this is cool/different/unexpected I wonder how this will play out".
