Self-imposed exile is still exile. I'm not a rubyist but I believe your reading of the saga is correct.
antoko··on Donating my Xbox
I've never been a console gamer so I wasn't really aware of this distinction - though I guess I do have some vague sense of it. I'd just assumed that the big titles were all available on all platforms. However, it appears you're absolutely correct , the games I listed weren't available on Xbox.

Still, speaking to unalone's broader point, maybe he just shouldn't have purchased an Xbox and stuck with one of the other consoles. Those games do exist.

I think the other reason why that change occurred is that the first generation of gamers grew up, had disposable income and were a huge potential market. Xbox was marketed specifically at that group and has been highly successful, but it was expanding the gamer market - it didn't do that by destroying the other genres. This isn't a zero-sum situation.

antoko··on Donating my Xbox
That's how I read this too, those whimsical (childish?) games are still around now (don't ask me to list any ... i'm all growed up!).

My son's 17 so let me look through some of his old PS2 games... Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Rayman, Tak - I think those all epitomize the type of game you are referencing, you just stopped playing that type of game because you grew out of them. Also, if you'd tried to play those games there would likely be plenty of peer pressure to keep you away, teenage boys are good at peer pressure like that.

antoko··on YC Demo Day, the Morning After
I read the main thrust of her post to be to fellow entrepreneurs - and to remind them to not worry about that commentary and keep going with the hard work of what they are doing.

Rather than the whole woe is me portion you quoted (and I agree it was laid on a little thick) I think money quote was fuck that noise and for the target audience I think that is pretty good advice.

Did the people from the 70s forget how to read now its 2013? ;)

I was born in '79 so although I was alive in 70s I wasn't really part of the whole free love movement or anything :)

I'm not sure its even that popular of a book for that cohort... I mean its a philosophical novel, what's the size of that market ever been?

There are certainly some things addressed in the book that aren't as applicable in a modern setting but the main thrust of the book investigates the intrinsic value or quality of things - That should always be applicable to future generations.

antoko··on Coding with gumption
It isn't really about motorcycle maintenance. Pirsig uses that as a common example in various places throughout the book. Its actually a philosophical novel, the subtitle is "An Inquiry into Values"

His later work Lila - is similarly subtitled "An Inquiry into Morals"

I highly recommend them both.

I think I've read ZatAoMM 3 times, admittedly the last time was >8 years ago. I didn't even remember "Gumption", it certainly did not seem to be a major theme of the book. It is very interesting to see other people's insights into a book especially when they're so divergent from your own. I guess I should read ZatAoMM and Lila again. :)
antoko··on Rejecting industry dogma, Costco backs calls to lift minimum wage
You're right, that is an interesting theory.

It doesn't appear to be supported by anything in reality though. Personally my expenditures go to primarily to housing, utilities, travel and food. I'm not sure how any of those boost China's economy directly - Wells Fargo is probably quite heavily invested in China one way or another though.

This "average" consumer spending infographic would appear to back that up. http://www.billshrink.com/blog/1204/consumer-income-spending...

It doesn't break down along income lines which is unfortunate, that information would inform discussions around minimum wage much more. I did find the age break down interesting though.

antoko··on Rejecting industry dogma, Costco backs calls to lift minimum wage
Bosses don't "give" employees raises? Let's not argue semantics.

Using your line of reasoning it doesn't actually matter whether the rise in wages is "artificial" or not, your argument is simply "wage rises will not help" As a former recipient of wage rises I have anecdotal evidence that they do. :)

Economies are complex systems looking at one aspect of them in isolation and thinking you can apply a high school level understanding of supply and demand and come up with any substantive insight is frankly misguided.

Also, Henry Ford disagrees with you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fordism

antoko··on Rejecting industry dogma, Costco backs calls to lift minimum wage
disposable and discretionary are not the same thing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disposable_and_discretionary_in...

disposable = wage - taxes

Therefore disposable income pays for rent, food, gas... All of which would be needed to alleviate poverty, but I guess that depends on how we're defining poverty.

antoko··on Rejecting industry dogma, Costco backs calls to lift minimum wage
I'm pretty sure that giving lots of people more disposable income will increase demand. Which will in turn increase revenues and allow successful businesses to expand, increasing employment numbers, creating a positive feedback loop.

In reality however things are a little more complicated.

It is obvious you take exception to the GPs quotes but you've not done a very good job of explaining why.

Do you believe the quoted statements from the GP are false?

Or do you not care if they are true, and rather believe that that kind of advice is always wrong?

antoko··on Dictionary + algorithm + PoD t-shirt printer + meme = rape t-shirts on Amazon
Yes it is mainly in the US, but I think calling it "pretty rare" isn't helpful.

For 2008, for example, the government had previously tallied 935 confirmed instances of sexual abuse. After asking around, and performing some calculations, the Justice Department came up with a new number: 216,000. That’s 216,000 victims, not instances. These victims are often assaulted multiple times over the course of the year. The Justice Department now seems to be saying that prison rape accounted for the majority of all rapes committed in the US in 2008, likely making the United States the first country in the history of the world to count more rapes for men than for women.

antoko··on DOJ Admits Aaron's Prosecution Was Political
wow lots to address here and I generally have a policy of avoiding political discussion on HN, so I'll refrain.

However I'd just say rather than looking at maps and guessing about wealth distribution you can just look at the exit poll data.

antoko··on DOJ Admits Aaron's Prosecution Was Political
I read the "Each" to refer to the prior sentence. Which is <example list of objectionable and non-objectionable government roles> which I interpret to mean, all government roles. While you may read it differently - I don't believe my reading is inaccurate or unfair.
antoko··on DOJ Admits Aaron's Prosecution Was Political
He said this:

The world is full of greedy people who seek power over others. Whether it's an ambitious Carmen Ortiz or an up-and-coming young congressman or a mild mannered traffic cop. Each seeks to control others as a very significant portion of his/her motivation and life's goal.

That does imply that everyone who ends up in a position of government power does so in order to control other people. That's the problem when someone uses such strident language and paints with such a broad brush - its very easy to just call them out on their lack of nuance and over-generalization

antoko··on The Serenity of a 5pm Bedtime
You've only been doing it a week... going to bed at 5pm when it is sunset is well and good in February. Come summer time trying to tell your body to sleep when the Sun is high in the sky might be a big problem. Certainly not impossible but it might not feel so great for you. I fell into a very natural (seeming) sleep pattern from 8am - 3pm which worked for me at the time. That was a lifetime ago though and it simply isn't practical for me now.
antoko··on Why we don't hire programmers based on puzzles and tricks
It is a poor choice of word. I'd suggest the reason for calling them "logic" is that the process by which you explain what you're thinking and why to the interview gives them an insight into your ability to use logic. The puzzles themselves are categorically NOT logic puzzles.

antoko··on Heroku - Bamboo Routing Performance
Considering how many people/companies fail so spectacularly at it, why would it be baffling? I also think you underestimate the difficulty in making things "sound as good as possible" that one quality is the basis of the entire marketing and political industries - and a large component of many others. You're basically saying "It's obvious - just be perfect!" - it is not that easy.

All that being said - I'm really not "applauding" Heroku or their actions (which are what matter) I'm waiting to hear what they'll say. In the mean time I thought their messaging (which matters much less) was good.

antoko··on Heroku - Bamboo Routing Performance
Your response doesn't really seem to be directed at my comment. In your first sentence you're using "this" as if you're talking about the blog post which is what I praise in my comment(the tone of it), but then in your second sentence "this" refers to the routing issue raised by rapgenius, I wasn't commenting on that at all - I'm not a Heroku customer I was merely commenting on a GM's response to negative press.
antoko··on Heroku - Bamboo Routing Performance
My comment is 3 sentence long and has 3 caveats. I am definitely reserving judgement, my praise was mostly about the tone, which I maintain is near perfect. I'm really curious if it was a case of him just writing it because a response hadn't been forthcoming and there needed to be one or if there was high-level meetings dissecting every word and phrase to make it just so - or where on that continuum it fell.
antoko··on Heroku - Bamboo Routing Performance
That's actually a pretty impressive response as far as it goes. Obviously there's no details at this point, but he absolutely takes responsibility, doesn't try to deflect or sugar coat it, and manages to find a tone that is both professional/serious, yet also down-to-earth and earnest. I guess the real impact will be how they go about "making it right" but in terms of a first response to the situation the tone is near perfect.
antoko··on Why You’re Failing to Realize Your Potential as a Developer
While I agree with most of what the author is saying, the tone of the post really bothered me, I'm not sure why because I usually don't pay much attention to tone provided the content is valid. The longer I read the more I started to think he wasn't really describing strong vs. weak developers, he was describing strong vs. weak personalities. It was wrapped up as commentary on our profession but for almost all of his points you can replace "a strong developer" with "a confident person" and "a weak developer" with "an insecure person", and it actually reads better if you do.

Maybe the author needs to take some time to learn how to increase confidence in his employees? It is usually more useful to see how you can affect positive change than complaining that life/the world/other people are to blame for everything.
