Why would you think I'm chastising rather than educating?

You're reading snark where none was intended, and responding in kind.

Double negatives are a problem when you're actually trying to use a single negative which is the case here.

I wasn't offering myself up as an authority on words, I'm pretty bad at both spelling and grammar.

Also, as a Brit living in the US I'm also well aware of different uses of words/spellings and agree that the point of language is communication, and irregardless doesn't cause confusion, as it is obvious what someone means when they use the word.

The whole point of prefacing my comment with, "I hate to be that guy", was to suggest that I'm not actually that guy to soften any perceived insult/criticism.

antoko··on Leaseweb has wiped all Megaupload servers
I hate to be "that guy" but "irregardless" is not actually a word. I have known some people to use the word ironically but that doesn't come across well in text.

regardless - without regard to

irrespective - without respect to

adding the prefix ir- and the suffix -less is doing the same thing twice, its a double negative.

Ha, there's even a wikipedia entry[1], I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

antoko··on Ultimate Tic Tac Toe
either I'm wrong

TLDR: you're wrong.

C/C, C/SW, C/S, [opponent takes C], C/SE, NE/SW, NE/S...

after C/SE, your opponent has control and can go anywhere that is available in the center board they've already won, so you can't assume you're next play will be NE.

More importantly after you've sent them to the SW board with NE/SW they can go anywhere except the middle and so they then have the initiative.

Hmm, It looks like you switched notation halfway through? I was assuming board/position and only showing player 1 moves but that doesn't after losing the center board

Regardless you lose the initiative after 5 moves.

antoko··on Has the US become the type of nation from which you have to seek asylum?
If you've got the popular support you're eluding to you'd be fine with baseball bats and molotov cocktails. You'd also be fine to steal the guns and other weapons of military/police forces as you have victorious encounters. You wouldn't actually need the guns in the first place.
antoko··on Using Metadata to Find Paul Revere
This is very clever and all, but from the British perspective - this is exactly what they would have been looking for and Revere would be considered a revolutionary and a real threat, so this is the system working as it is supposed to.

This is the equivalent of saying that the NSA can use such metadata to find muslim extremists that want to kill your children and implement sharia law. (hyperbole courtesy of American media)

Changing the timeline such that "americans" are the underdogs rather than the establishment isn't really helpful... is it? Or is this attempt to stoke revolutionary sentiment?

antoko··on Obama: No warrantless wiretaps if you elect me (2008)
Actually Lincoln was a pragmatist and had to deal with prioritizing things accordingly.

On August 22, 1862, just a few weeks before signing the Proclamation and after he had already discussed a draft of it with his cabinet in July, he wrote a letter in response to an editorial by Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune which had urged complete abolition. Lincoln differentiates between "my view of official duty"—that is, what he can do in his official capacity as President—and his personal views. Officially he must save the Union above all else; personally he wanted to free all the slaves:

I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views. I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free.

banking details is a much broader term than credit card number.

account numbers / routing numbers / company names / po boxes/ physical addresses / account history and other billing info.

I'd assume they're saying some of these might be compromised, but specifically that credit cards aren't.

antoko··on Maps That Show How Americans Speak English Differently From Each Other
So literally no one at all uses the correct "you" ?

I've used various different alternates as I've aged and moved locations but I'm fairly certain "you" (with a silent parenthetical (plural) ) has remained my default throughout.

youwse / you lot / your lot (northern UK)

guys (used as non-gendered) (bay area)

y'all / you all (Texas)

antoko··on Maps That Show How Americans Speak English Differently From Each Other
Not to put words in his mouth but, I think the GP was referring to the information density rather than the information quality itself. Likely as the comparison he was making was to the presentation quality.

I think you are both capable of being correct... but then I must think that because I agree with both of you :)

the actual quote was

>The vast majority of software projects never make it far enough for the name to matter. You don't know which category your project will end up in when you start it.

The "categories" are:

1) Projects where the name will matter because the project is successful

and

2) Projects where the name won't matter because the project dies before reaching critical mass.

EDIT: apologies, this was supposed to be a reply to examancer

antoko··on US Supreme Court: Cops can take a routine DNA swab at time of arrest
CISPA is for sharing information about cyber threats, clearly DNA samples would not fall into that category. So no that isn't an "interesting thing", because it isn't a true thing its just you spreading FUD about something that isn't related to this topic.
antoko··on Facebook isn't broken, I'm just not interesting
Interesting, I'm not a facebook user, I deleted my account 3 or 4 years ago. Is there a way to setup multiple concurrent filters so you can basically switch modes? So you could have your feed/wall (sorry I'm not great with the fb terminology) show you:

1) Close friends & family

2) Posts related to the subject "Programming"

3) Posts from people who haven't otherwise made it to your wall in the last 30 days.

Basically what level of granularity is currently offered in terms of FB filters, and can you setup multiple ones to switch between them?

Is this an area that FB are currently working on? Seems like this would be a good remedy for people who aren't finding the content they want.

Users are still going to be required to do some work to setup their filters though, I really don't see how you can avoid that though.

antoko··on How Did Work-Life Balance in the U.S. Get So Awful?
>However, during that time, there has been a large shift of two-parent (where both parents worked) to single-parent households.

I wouldn't categorize this shift[1] as "large" and given the relative sizes of the groups of households I don't believe it can be having the affect you suggest.

antoko··on Everyone Does Everything: How To Work on Teams of Generalists
In my company (7 of us), every new hire gets an unassembled chair and an uninstalled computer and are expected to take care of it themselves on their first day (I guess you could say it's part of our company culture).

Heh that sounds awesome. A very real demonstration to a new hire what's expected of them - "Stuff needs doing? roll up your sleeves and get it done."

antoko··on Why Don't Startups Get Their Users To Invest In Them?
Apologies, bad choice of word on my part. I should have said "akin" rather than "related".

The point I was trying to make is that whilst those companies offer a membership incentive structure its not a true co-op and you don't have an ownership stake in the company. You just receive some member benefits like cash back and discount coupons - similar to your credit card company giving you air miles.

antoko··on Why Don't Startups Get Their Users To Invest In Them?
Federal Credit Unions work in a similar way to the UK's Building Societies. There are other co-ops here but I don't think they have the same penetration as in the UK.

One national brand I CAN think of that is a co-op is REI, I'm sure there are others though, lots of local-focused food businesses use a co-op model.

Costco and Sam's club (wholesalers / cash n carry) offer membership benefits but I think that's more related to getting air miles on your credit card.

antoko··on Hug vs. Handshake
I pretty much only ever shake hands when first being introduced to someone, or when concluding some kind of business arrangement.

I have no problem with hugging but I really don't care - I never instigate it with males or females but have no problem returning a hug if one is incoming.

Who has the time to worry about stuff like this? I really don't get it, chances are the people you are imagining taking offense aren't analyzing the interaction at all - let alone as deeply as you are.

I'd strongly advise bosses not to hug their employees except in very rare circumstances, those interactions are much likely to be analyzed by the recipient and any observing coworkers

I'm a married male for the record.

antoko··on I Don't Want Your Fucking App
That's interesting, I'd have no problem linking this to my boss or PM if they were trying to convince us to implement something that resembled a doorslam. I'd probably include some reference to the fact that the language is colorful in the email and suggest this is the kind of passion that the proposed doorslam will raise in our own customers.

I'm a brit living in the US so add that as a datapoint too!

..., I figured I could at least nickel and dime the casino.

This means SHE was avoiding the losses not actively trying to make a profit. That's how I read first time and still how it reads now. I guess the use of the term "hacking" in this sense wasn't a great idea.

The term is being used like life-hacking.

I'm not much of a biologist and I may just be spouting what I've heard in the past, but I think all the water soluble vitamins and such are totally safe and impossible to OD on, it is the fat-soluble ones where there's the potential to OD.

EDIT: Mostly correct! Fat-soluble vitamins build up in the fatty tissues and are much slower to release and are almost always responsible for Vitamin Poisoning, water-soluble vitamins are easily excreted in the obvious way.

There are exceptions though, you can overdose on some of the B vitamins which are water-soluble, I didn't follow up to find out why that is.
