antiquark··on Trump's Tariffs Wipe Out over $6T on Wall Street in Epic Two-Day Rout
This could lead to the largest "free trade zone" in the world... everyone but the USA.
antiquark··on Markdown and the Slow Fade of the Formatting Fetish
Sounds like you're looking for Iosevka!

antiquark··on Extracting DNA from the air – DNA evidence of human occupancy in indoor premises
Reminds me of the case of David Butler.

"Mr Butler has a rare skin condition, which means he sheds flakes of skin, leaving behind much larger traces of DNA than the average person. He worked as a taxi driver, and so it was possible for his DNA to be transferred from his taxi via money or another person, onto the murder victim."

antiquark··on Gig workers worked more but earned less in 2024: study
Moral of the story: don't be a gig worker.
antiquark··on 50 Years of Travel Tips
Am I the "odd man out" for not wanting to travel, and not enjoying it when I do?
antiquark··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
Rust doesn't have a specification or standard yet, which would make it difficult to formally verify.

antiquark··on Particle gains or loses mass depending on direction it travels
Could they create a non-Newtonian drive with this?

Let the particle race around a circular track, and you'll have a net force in one direction.

antiquark··on Watch carved from meteorite that hit Earth a million years ago
That grid-like crystalline pattern can't be produced in a lab. It's only present in metals that cool by 1 celsius every thousand years.

antiquark··on The Stone Soup Theory of Billionaires
Totally nonsensical article. It's like calling Frank Lloyd Wright a fraud because he didn't personally lay the bricks for the buildings he designed.
antiquark··on The Onion buys Infowars
> If you play fair against monsters, monsters win.

If you become a monster to fight the monster, the monster always wins!

antiquark··on Perceptually lossless (talking head) video compression at 22kbit/s
Not quite lossless... look at the bicycle seat behind him. When he tilts his head, the seat moves with his hair.
antiquark··on SimpleQA
Sounds like the computer game "Animal" from 1978.

Welcome to the "hide-and-seek" philosophy of UX design.
antiquark··on Comedy Theory (2022)
Thank God for the hatchery.
antiquark··on The Fennel Programming Language
Call me old fashioned, but I always thought syntax like "x = a * b + c" was a leap forward.
antiquark··on Los Angeles is in a 4-year sprint to deliver a car-free 2028 Olympics
Sorry, cars are here to stay.
antiquark··on How Deep Can Humans Go?
And to add to the confusion, there is actually "hypoxic water" which is water containing no oxygen and is harmful to marine life.
antiquark··on Why the international experimental nuclear fusion reactor is in 'big trouble'
> "It was originally planned to line the tokamak reactor with protective beryllium but that turned out to be very tricky. It is toxic and eventually it was decided to replace it with tungsten... That was a major design change taken very late in the day.”

The toxicity of beryllium is well known... how did this design decision go through? Someone was asleep at the wheel.

antiquark··on Is a Universal Basic Income System Even Possible?
UBI would be such a big tax burden, that politicians would start promising to abolish it. Hence, I don't think it could last in a democracy.
antiquark··on A Model of a Mind
Nice ideas... now build it!
antiquark··on The History of "The Rule of Thirds"
I always thought the rule of thirds was interesting, because often you could chop a photo down the center, and still get two semi-competent photographs.
antiquark··on The Rhisotope Project: Insertion of radioisotopes into live rhinoceros
So they have to tranquilize the rhinos first. That in itself can kill the animal.

I can't find a reference, but that reminds me of an old project to dye rhino horns pink. Sadly, a few rhinos didn't survive the process.

antiquark··on FDA warns top U.S. bakery not to claim foods contain allergens when they don't
FDA is talking out of both sides of their mouth. From their own website:

> Consumers may also see advisory statements such as “may contain [allergen] or “produced in a facility that also uses [allergen].” Such statements are not required by law and can be used to address unavoidable “cross-contact,” only if manufacturers have incorporated good manufacturing processes in their facility and have taken every precaution to avoid cross-contact that can occur when multiple foods with different allergen profiles are produced in the same facility using shared equipment or on the same production line, as the result of ineffective cleaning, or from the generation of dust or aerosols containing an allergen.

antiquark··on Ancient Eastern European mega-sites: a social levelling concept?
