antics9··on OCRmyPDF: Add an OCR text layer to scanned PDF file
http://www.tobias-elze.de/pdfsandwich/ has been my tool for years to OCR old research papers and books. It uses Tesseract and some other tools to get the job done.

It's last in my workflow after using:

Briss, a simple cross-platform application for cropping PDF files: https://sourceforge.net/projects/briss/

PDF Arranger to merge or split pdf documents and rotate, crop and rearrange their pages using an interactive and intuitive graphical interface: https://github.com/pdfarranger/pdfarranger

antics9··on What’s new in Emacs 28.1?
Acme was my daily driver for a couple of years (mainly writing). Went back to Emacs because of org-mode; it's just _that_ powerful.

I mostly miss chording and Acmes way of finding and opening files. It was intuitive and nothing felt hidden; like the commands and dired feels in emacs.

But I guess Acmes functionality could be added to emacs by elisp, no?

antics9··on Ask HN: How do I develop skills to comfort people and offer compassion?
As someone already said, firstly: STFU, be attentive and listen.

You need to understand when it is a one way or two way communication.

When the other person is having a monologue and is sharing something concerning to them, or even just some neutral event that happened during the day, you just listen attentively like you would when listening to someone reading a book for you. Then you stay within a "tell me more" response.

When the situation requires a dialogue, however, you stay within the proximity of shared experiences. Here you don't venture into advice space unless the other part explicitly requests that.

antics9··on Joke written by an AI: “A basic program walked into a bar ”
I found this pretty clever:

Input: Write a program that calculates a subjective meaning of life.

import java.util.Scanner; /* * Calculates a subjective meaning of life. / public class SubjectiveMeaningOfLife { /* Main method. */ public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.println("What is the subjective meaning of life?"); int meaning = input.nextInt(); System.out.println("That is " + meaning + "."); } }

antics9··on Active ingredient in cannabis protects aging brain cells, researchers find
That might explain why my friends stopped maturing by their early twenties!

antics9··on Extremist content on Reddit, Discord worrying trend for young adults in India
I belive the point they were trying to make is that noone needs to give up their ideology. Keep it but hang out in public spaces where other or opposing ideologies are present.

Even if someone does not want to change their position, they can still learn and understand why someone has an opposing or different one.

There are always spaces in which nonviolent or noncoercive interaction can exist.

antics9··on Serotonin selectively influences moral judgment and behavior
I second this.

I take antihistamines from April to September. Loratadin absolutely has a negative effect on my mood. Mostly because I feel tired I believe. Switched to Ebastin and no more tiredness. However, I am starting to suspect that it also does affect my mood in some way or another.

During winter I take a pill as a precautionary if I’m going to be in any dusty spaces. The day after I sometimes experience mood swings that I cannot explain.

antics9··on Frozen tardigrade becomes first 'quantum entangled' animal in history
This sounds just like the tardigrade surfing the mycelium network in Star Trek Discovery.
