anticrymactic··on ArchiveTeam has finished archiving all goo.gl short links
It's a link, what privacy can one expect?

Especially with short links there's always the possibility of entering ~6 characters and getting a hit. So I believe expecting any secrecy from urls is silly.

That's like posting your passwords on Twitter because "Why would anyone find my account"

Could charging in the ignition be good enough to keep it full? Or a secondary dock at home?

I don't really like the idea of short term key batteries, but it sounds like bmw can improve the current system a lot.

anticrymactic··on Android 16 is here
I'm genuinely so interested what this ecosystem is? Where do you use it? How does it help you?

I have asked every apple user around me and they just tell me about photo sync and iCloud.

Call me old, but I don't think users want AI. Apple summary's turned out barely helpful and that was the big, simple and easy AI application. Instead of a working voice assistant, what uses does AI (LLM) have on a smartphone?

anticrymactic··on Migrating away from Rust
This could be different in game dev, but in the last years of writing rust (outside of learning the language) I very rarely need to index any collection.

There is a very certain way rust is supposed to be used, which is a negative on it's own, but it will lead to a fulfilling and productive programming experience. (My opinion) If you need to regularly index something, then you're using the language wrong.

anticrymactic··on Self-Hosting like it's 2025
Isn't that the beauty of self hosting? How could anything be enforced on user-controlled servers? Practically everything self-hosted is open source and how would enforcing anything would even work?
anticrymactic··on I made a Chrome extension that lets you scrape Reddit thread in JSON format
This feels really weird. You announce an extension to a problem that doesn't exist (see other comments about .json), while the extension itself is not even released yet. With the only options being to subscribe to a newsletter or "get the zip via email"?

"Getting via Email" will also just subscribe you to the newsletter...

anticrymactic··on We outsmarted CSGO cheaters with IdentityLogger
> The main solutions we have today are IP ban + VPN blocking using a database of known VPN subnets and adding them all to the firewall, and a similar fingerprinting technique which scans their folder structure of certain system folders.

No. VPN blocking is useless to stop malicious actors as most residential connections have DHCP and VPN subnets are added and removed somewhat frequently, it's not that hard to find a "undocumented" one. It also completely excluds anyone using a VPN for non-malicous purposes.

Scanning files and folders is just ridiculous, not only an incredible invasion of privacy, but also trivial to work around.

anticrymactic··on Ask HN: How to secure website for public launch
> If you're not sure, put everything behind Cloudflare and don't expose your origin at all.

While I very much understand where this sentiment comes from. Please do not blindly recommend CF.

Cloudflare seems invisible for gullible users, but is unusable and hostile to humans.

I use a VPN to a static IP by Hetzner, not to hide my true identity. But because I have to, my current living situation has my (only available) internet running through a corporate network, packet filtering/logging and all. (Yes this is all legal and I am grateful).

But still to remain any kind of privacy I have to use a VPN. My public IP is registered directly to my full name and has not changed in 3 years.

I also try and limit the amount of unnecessary data my browser transmits.

The combination of those has CF absolutely convinced that I am a existential threat to any site they so honorably "protect".

I simply cannot use ANY site with the default CF configuration. And no, I'm not the only one. This is a very common problem among humans that don't want to share everything about them to pass a human verification.

Cloudflare is the cancer of the Internet. They protect and enable criminals, only to sell the solution later. All the while, ridiculing humans into giving up more and more data in the name of safety. They trick users with promises of "Securing the connection" when they are just matching the browser to their database to sell another page visit. The internet used to be a free and open connection to the world, cloudflare has build a panopticon of surveillance and false security and they are being praised for it.

anticrymactic··on Japan to introduce 'blue ticket' fine system for cyclists
> > like you have just tried to murder them > > I think a lot of the anger comes from the fact that a lot of people, maybe even most people, are just not temperamentally suited to operating heavy machinery in mixed-use public spaces every day.

Your reply is good and just like to add to it: The mentality of "like you just tried to murder them" is so laughably detached. It's not like they did, they just did. Distracted/Ignorant drivers DO try to kill you. So many (car)people underestimate the real dangers of a self propelled metal wall. I love driving both cars and bikes, but I am also very very aware that a single collision above 10 mph can be lethal. It's not anger about pendantic rule following. It is bottled up frustrations in the face of blatent negligence.

Cyclist are shooting nerf blasters while drivers close their eyes while using a machine gun.

The US is also the region with the strongest iOS market dominance. Why compete for 30% of a saturated market, when EU/ME/India is more lucrative and also much closer to the EU based operation. It just makes more sense to focus on domestic markets. Same with many US brands.
anticrymactic··on Ask HN: Interest in a Rust-Inspired Language Compiling to JavaScript?
While an improvement to js is _always_ welcome. I am worried about the "debuggability". How do you plan on generating the js efficiently?

I HATE most js frameworks for this reason. Understanding/Tweaking websites is something I do extensively, and obfuscated minified recursive js makes this REALLY hard.

Private servers are already possible and also popular. The network is called FiveM and it has a lot more features and customization than the original.
anticrymactic··on A structured note-taking app for personal use
I wouldn't trust syncthing if it were only running on my "end-devices". I have an instance on my server running as a sort of master. Else you can end up in situations where, for example your laptop is the only device online with no sync partners, and then you turn it off before it could sync properly.
anticrymactic··on Resetting the timer in my toothbrush
Very far from hostile. I have this toothbrush and the only thing it does is beep ONCE, when it thinks the head is done. After that I will only show the "please change" indicator, but will still brush just fine.

I was actually shocked by how user friendly the whole experience is. It never prevented me from doing anything "not recommended", it'll warn me, sure. But then go right back to accepting my imput.

Assuming you said this in good faith.

How are the Russians responsible for their government? Assuming you are American: how have you stopped the offensive in Iraq or Afghanistan?

This is exactly what the Russian government needs, hating Russians will only validate the propaganda. They tell their citizens, how much the west hates them and how they are protecting themselves from NATO. By fulfilling this illusion, you only motivate Russians to actually support their government.

While I tend to agree, a lot of commands also have pretty good aliases.

For example `iwr` for Invoke-Web-Request.

Also the full names are only expected to be used in scripts to maintain readability. No one types that in the console. Also ALL Parameters can be abbreviated if they are unique. If no other Parameter starts with R then -R is enough for -Recurse. (there are some quirks with this, but generally pretty intuitive)

And using select or for-each on actual types is magical, instead of grepping/shedding/parsing a maybe standardized string, with completely unsensical names (like grep or sed)

If you give bash and pwsh the same time and love, they will become both pretty ergonomic

anticrymactic··on Samsung and other manufacturers disable phones bought on gray markets
Like apple? Where bad evil thieves who want to change their screen are rightfully prevented.

Somehow iPhones are still stolen every day.

It's all just a play, manufacturers don't give a rats ass about thieves, they want to prevent a third market because it hurts their imaginary revenue.

anticrymactic··on Microsoft cuts ties with the Surface Duo after just 2 Android version updates
I don't know anything about android tv. You can blame Google's garbage A/B testing addiction for that. Android on most devices is very stable. If it's not (manufacturers fault), just install LineageOS (basically stock ASOP, with device drivers)
anticrymactic··on Is air conditioning making cities hotter?
> Now, how did the air inside these structures get warmed up in the first place? Under normal conditions, is the air inside the structures WARMER than the ambient air?

Greenhouse effect + no wind.

The infrared emitted by heated objects are reflected by the glass, heating the room even more
