anticodon··on Live Not by Lies (1974)
It's important to stand up to lies and to speak against recognized propaganda for what it is, but how capable are we as a society even to recognize the propaganda and lies when we see them?

This comment looks ironic under the link to one of the most famous propagandist and liar in human history.

Solzhenitsyn's books are full of lies that were debunked thousands of times. Most of the numbers in his books were written for him by the CIA curators. He never had access to any documents that he could cite as a source, so he just copied the numbers from cheat sheets provided for him by CIA.

There're other numerous non-fitments in his books.

He was a weapon of American propaganda against USSR. He collaborated with CIA. It's ironic and pitiful that he's still referred to as some kind of truth-seeker.

Yeah, let's replace all world cultures with monoculture of McDonalds, Coca-Cola and Disneyland. After all, US being able to pour printed money at absurd quantities means it has the best culture in the world, and all the others vastly inferior?..

It's so sad.

anticodon··on Across Kazakhstan by rail
Yeah, bees opposing honey, as we say in Russia in such cases.
anticodon··on Across Kazakhstan by rail
> You probably not going to find any sympathy for the USSR in central Europe.

The most funny thing is that when they recently conducted a survey in Baltic states, percent of supporters of the USSR was so big, that it surpassed percent of supporters of the USSR e.g. in Russia.

This created quite a big fuss. :)

anticodon··on Across Kazakhstan by rail
You will find people that mourns Soviet Union in all parts of the former USSR and among all age groups.

Just like the opposite opinion.

But percent of people mourning USSR would be quite big. This has nothing to do with western stereotypes about dreadly life in USSR (mostly invalid propaganda) or various dictators (can you, without checking Wikipedia/Google, name the president of Kazakhstan, and say if it is a authoritarian or "democratic" place?).

USSR was destroyed for a number of reasons but none of the reasons had anything to do with the goal to improve life of USSR citizens.

One goal was to destroy a global economic competitor. Another goal was to open huge new market to the western corporations (both goals achieved by shutting down and destroying all the USSR industry almost overnight). Third goal was for the crooks to be able to become super-rich and be able to pass the inherited power and money to the offspring.

All these goals mean that life of the ordinary person in the former USSR states was to become much worse than before. And it happened as everyone born before 1991 knows out of unpleasant and sad experience.

But my comment wasn't about that. It was about that the West is still so afraid of the USSR it still tries to kick the USSR in every article even if it is not really relevant.

anticodon··on Across Kazakhstan by rail
Traveled several times across Kazakhstan by rail and my impressions are quite the opposite. You wait to arrive to your destination for days and nothing changes outside the window: just the same scenery with endless sand or steppes with no sign of trees or animals or people. Probably the most boring experience I had in my life.

Funny how western media can't resist poking the dead enemy at every occasion: > Adylet: ‘Anyone who still mourns the Soviet Union today is out of his mind!’

Well, if you'd really talk to people, you'd find out that significant percent of population still mourns the Soviet Union and they have all the reasons to.

They were not depleted suddenly. Cost of extracting oil and gas is steadily rising. This will soon lead to a situation where there's still enough oil in the Earth, but it's unviable to extract it because you have to invest more energy to extract it than you can receive from burning the extracted oil.

We're almost there. E.g. in Russia all new oil deposits found in recent years are in polar areas where extracting is difficult and expensive.

2. It is amazing how beginning of the super crisis coincided with the pandemia. I remember that in the beginning of the 2019 I said to several of my friends that huge crisis will hit the world at the end of the year. But I couldn't even imagine what would happen in the beginning of 2020.

Anyway, governments would want to get rid of extra mouths, especially young people with lots of energy but no way to put it into something productive.

It's especially clear when you start noticing that NATO forces are concentrating near Russian borders and amount of NATO military exercises on Russian borders has increased several times.

Russia has a big population and huge amounts of mineral resources. If NATO manages to capture Russian territory and exterminate most of the population in the process, it would give maybe 10-50 more years for Europe to adapt (e.g. build thermonuclear or some viable green energy sources), because currently Russia uses much of oil and gas and other resources for its own consumption.

There're other countries that could be the next potential targets. Two birds with one stone: turn young people who can't find a place in life into war into cannon fodder and potentially capture resources to extend the agony of the over-consuming economy.

anticodon··on Paintmakers are running out of the color blue
> This is all momentary situation caused by the pandemic

Very unlikely. 2020 was beginning of a super crisis caused by several reasons:

1) Depletion of fossil fuels which are used to produce consumer goods, e.g. to heat factories and provide electricity for the factory machines. Also fossil fuels are used to transport produced goods around half of the world. It was all possible due to abundant and cheap energy. But that energy source is no longer there.

2) Inability of capitalist economy to grow more. Capitalist economy must constantly expand to new markets but there're no more new markets as amount of markets on planet Earth is finite. Last huge market was created by destroying USSR and USSR industry: it postponed the super crisis by 30 years by giving capitalist system more space to expand to. But there's no longer any place for further expansion.

All will be going downhill from now on. Also, rising economic problems will prompt governments to start wars to exterminate "superfluous" population that cannot be fed in the new dark ages. There're other reasons for new war also. If you capture the country with still remaining fossil fuel resources and exterminate its population, you'll have more time to prepare for the inevitable.

anticodon··on Bioelektryczność – Polish Robotics (1968) [video]
Even if it all were true, it won't last for long. We're in the supercrisis. It's unlikely that it will end any time soon.

Fossil fuels sources are depleted. Without fossil fuels there's no agriculture as they are used to produce fertilizers, also tractors, harvesters, etc work on fossil fuels.

It's possible to go back to the technologies of 17th-18th century (wind energy, etc), but these technologies are unable to support the current population of Earth and current lifestyle. Population would have to shrink to the size of the world population from 17th century also. Also, no cheap plastic toys everywhere. No huge suburbs with huge houses and cars with 4-6 liters of displacement to move from home to work.

From reading news it looks like there're no serious science and technology advances. All the advances are concentrated on how to brainwash world population more effectively and extract the money and attention by providing spiffy useless toys like cooler smartphones.

> I have no idea how a nation as large, diverse, and fragmented the USA (where I live) is going to combat it.

USA is a pioneer in this battle. It also owns all the tools and media necessary for the combat and uses it for its advantage for years (Google Search, Google YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, Netflix, etc).

It's everyone else that is losing this battle.

anticodon··on The booming business of knitting together the world’s electricity grids
AFAIK, because of this Germany also has now the highest electricity price in Europe.
anticodon··on How not to blow up the production database
There's one gotcha with this approach: if there's another DDL operation running simultaneously with REFRESH MATERIALIZED VIEW, you'd get an internal postgres error.

You cannot be sure that refresh won't coincide with a grant on all tables in the schema, for example.

anticodon··on World food prices hit 10-year peak – FAO
> it wouldn't make people using other currencies poorer.

My country produces gas, oil, lumber, food, metals. When USA prints another few billions, they can simply come to any company producing these resources, and offer higher price. Because the money doesn't cost US anything: they just printed them.

For the local company it makes more sense to sell to the US customer at higher price than to local customer at lower price in local currency.

So, when US prints another billion, it means that local companies experience resource shortages and rising prices, because everything is exported to USA.

To add insult to injury, money earned by the exporters almost never end up in the local economy. Exporter just hoard them in offshore banks.

This scheme of things is extremely beneficial for the US economy and inimical to all other economies in the world.

anticodon··on World food prices hit 10-year peak – FAO
While what you say is probably true, I've recently had a talk with a coworker who worked for a month in USA and one of the things that impressed her most was how much food is thrown into the trash in USA, food prices rise everywhere around the world.

For me the most obvious explanation is export of inflation from USA: USA printed abnormal amount of unsecured money, and since USD is a world reserve currency, prices begin to rise everywhere. USA doesn't produce enough goods and services to offset the amount of money they print. With every start of their money printer the whole world becomes more poor.

I wish there would be a way to somehow disconnect the cancer tumor of USD from the rest of the world. But I'm not an economist and don't know the way to do it and what if the owner of the next currency chosen for reserve currency start to exploit its position for their own benefit like USA now.

Besides, when I speak about ignorance, I speak from experience.

I can open BBC news or CNN and read something about Russia and make facepalm 1000th time when I read about some fact about the place where I live or some event I witnessed.

You, people on the West, don't know what we know about you. What we read in our news about you, what we think about you.

So even if you suppose we're brainwashed, you can't have any evidence of it.

> 1. The US doesn't do this.

US killed tens, maybe hundreds of millions directly and indirectly. Starting from the very beginning of its existence (genocide of natives). Ending with Libya, which is a failed state now, with slaves and anarchy, thanks to the help of US and NATO.

> 2. This is an apt description of USSR history, which is of course Russian history.

Russia (and USSR) was not always right. But it never genocided whole populations, there was never colonies of Russia that were exploited like African or Asian colonies. USSR, for example, pumped a lot of its income not into the Russian population but in the limitrophe republics (Estonia, Latvia, Uzbekistan, etc). It is not the same.

> es, I'm sure the free media all over the world

Free media, LOL. People need to live somewhere, you know buy or rent an apartment or house. Buy food, pay for electricity and heat. Nobody is free from that.

So journalist, you know, usually work for some organization that pays them salary. That organization determines what they should write about and how, where to put accents in the articles.

There're not many such organizations. They all belong to some mega-corporations, holdings, etc, that in turn belong to a very limited circle (no more than 10 persons worldwide).

Where would the truth appear in this scheme of things?

Are you really that naive?

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Russians doesn't destroy whole countries and kill millions because they think they know some higher truth about how those people should live their life.

That's the main difference between us and the "collective West".

Also, West is amazingly ignorant. E.g. when people from the West discuss history of Russia, USSR, Georgia, Chechnya, Ukraine, Crimea, it is clear that you don't know a single bit about these places or history or relationships between countries and people here. You just regurgitate typical stereotypes and media lies.

The level of ignorance is so high that there're cases where it is beyond facepalm. E.g. utterances of Jane Psaki about shores of Belarus, or recent declaration in French newspaper that Ukraine invaded Crimea in 2014.

You guys know nothing, absolutely nothing. You live in a bubble created by ignorance, not knowing a single foreign language, inability to consume any information but lies fabricated by your media that belong to 5-6 rich persons that push a single agenda in unison.

Yet you're ready to kill millions based on that misinformation.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Since when Wikipedia has become a source of truth?

Well, mate, do you read Russian or Ukrainian?

How can you tell me that it is a lie? It is forbidden to speak Russian in Ukraine, because it's an actual Ukrainian law. The law, you know, that was made by Ukrainian government and it is effective and people are fined by the police.

Also, Ukraine forbids Russian websites, Russian TV and even burns books in Russian.

Please, you know it all (as all westerners): prove that use of Russian is not forbidden in Ukraine.

Please, prove that Hitler and nazism is not honored in Ukraine on the government level. There's a yearly parade of SS veterans in Kiev. Every year in the open - everyone can see it!

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
What exactly is a lie?

Half of my family lives in Ukraine. I speak with them several times a year. Before 2014 I visited them at least once a year.

They all want to move to Russia because of the rise of nazism. Some of them already moved and they're very happy that they did it.

Fascists.

Actually, fascists and Hitler are honored in Ukraine on the government level. There's no way to deny it.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Yes, that's typical of the West to call any contradicting information as "paid by Russian government".

It never cease to amaze me how hard US population believes that it has some kind of monopoly on truth. That no other nation or person can know the truth, but US is always right.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
It's not a conspiracy. There're plenty of evidence that Navalny received funding from western governments. Also, he had received "mysterious" bitcoin donations for millions of USD.

Also, Germany had provided him with studio and equipment to film his last propaganda movie and YouTube promoted it very aggressively (no other YouTube clip was ever promoted this aggressively - it was starting automatically for almost any person in Russia that opened YouTube).

Yeah, that's a conspiracy...

As sordid as the Iraq war was, it seems strictly better to to topple an oppressive dictator

I think that 600,000 Iraqis killed in that war (lower bound) would have different opinion.

Besides, does population of Iraq live better now? I seriously doubt that.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
USA invaded Europe during WWII and never left. I still consider Italy and Germany occupied countries. They are not independent, they're occupied for 76 years.

Why and how US will invade its colonies? Italy and Germany cannot resist any decision made by US. They have US military bases on their soil and their own army is deliberately made smaller and weaker than personnel of US military bases.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Specifically after Ukraine attempted to join NATO since 1991.

Specifically after Ukraine made speaking Russian illegal and started treating Russian speaking population as second class citizens.

Specifically after Ukraine made plans to give Crimea to US to build a US military base.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Russia is not obliged to pay Ukrainian bills. They're unreliable partners (both for EU and Russia), they have a history of blackmailing EU with threats to stop gas transit (Ukraine, not Russia threatened EU!), they're stealing transit gas all the time.

Besides, they're used as an enemy, as cannon fodder against Russia. Why would Russia feed them using our natural resources? What's our obligation? It's not their gas, it's not their pipeline (it was built by "soviet occupants").

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Alexander Litvinenko, Boris Nemtsov, Alexei Navalny

There's no evidence that Putin is related to death of these persons. BTW, Navalny is alive and well and all the evidence shows that he was probably "poisoned" by the CIA to create another "victim" of Putin's regime.

Besides, Navalny is a terrorist on CIA payroll. He's working on destroying Russia from within. He was recruited and trained abroad and most of his "donations" are coming from western governments and spy agencies. Nobody trusts him here.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Russia doesn't have either.

Do you have proofs? Anything comparable to killing 4 millions in Vietnam, 600,000 in Iraq (probably more), etc, etc.

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
The US isn’t assassinating dissidents in EU countries, after all. It’s also not installing dictators in your neighboring countries.

This is absolutely not true. US is assassinating dissidents all over the world all the time.

US is installing puppet governments and staging revolutions all the time to pursue its economical interests.

BTW, none of the alleged Russian assassinations were proven. There're only "highly likely" arguments without a single piece of evidence. And when there're counter arguments, they are not printed in the western press. E.g. how Germany was preparing for investigation of "poisoning" of Navalny, before it was known that he was "poisoned".

anticodon··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
I suspect/hope Russia's remaining economy will still be too dependent on exports to risk attacking anyone

Why would Russia attack anyone? What would be the point of such an attack?

Why US is allowed to attack anyone, destroys whole countries and kill millions of people, including hundreds of thousands of civilians and everybody is ok with it (recent examples: Libya, Afghanistan, Syria)?

anticodon··on Using two keyboards at once for pain relief
I've switched to vim for pain relief. I use vim or vim mode in the IDE (almost any IDE supports it now, I usually use IdeaVIM).

Also replaced mouse with a trackball.

Using vim means I almost never required to press two keys at once (Alt-something, Ctrl-something). Trackball doesn't cause the same amount of strain as trying to grab a tiny mouse.

I use this setup for about 11 years - no more pain.
