Hyperbola GNU/Linux user. My main tools came from https://t3x.org, and https://github.com/howerj it's for fun (and sometimes enlightening purposes). tmux, tcc/cproc, oksh, nvi... keep it simple, stupid.

Lisp a la Unix way.

You can use WinCDEmu to mount the bin/cue image in a libre way.

On VCD's, IDK about Windows, but by extracting the DAT file under Unix you could just get the MPEG stream as if it were a file.

anthk··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
I'd happily run ITS on that.

Deus Ex with GMDX plays great even with just a 1280x780 resolution.

Also it enhances the places with more furniture, trees, objects and new areas. OFC there are new weapons and upgrades too.

Guix users can just add the Fearware Guix channel which is just the nonfree firmware and blobbed vanilla Linux kernel, no propietary software it's added, just the necessary firmware to run your hardware (3D Radeon support, Nouveau+reclocking, some audio chipsets, and most of non-ant9k WiFi cards). That's it.
anthk··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Guix has reproducibility. Instead of Nonguix, which bundles tons of propietary software, they can just add the Fearware repo, which just has the tainted non-free vanilla Linux kernel with closed blobs and firmware, just enough to function your machine well (especially with 3D support for Radeon cards and wireless devices) and nothing more.

anthk··on How big are factorials?
With Lisp you can use iterative algos and get that under a second too. SBCL can be ridiculously fast; and if you optimize the compilation for integers... the speed gets really close to your solution.
anthk··on How big are factorials?
I did factorials even under KLISP 23 with cons cells as fake integers:

https://t3x.org/klisp/22/index.html

Dog slow but the old n270 netbook (32 bit) handles big factorials >20 fine, and OFC it's instant under Common Lisp (SBCL) and Scheme (both S9 and Chicken).

anthk··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
Ori B. it's a great programmer, he fixed a small bug on the earlier GeFS on 9front versions in no time. It worked fine in my n270 based Atom netbook under 9front, so it will run perfectly well under OpenBSD in a near future.

It isn't as resource heavy as ZFS, and it will be more reliable than FFS, for sure.

anthk··on The case against a C alternative (2022)
Rust wasn't made to replace C, C is to be there at low level and as a glue code for everything.

Rust was made to replace C++ because the language it's a behemoth, it tries to do everything and the syntax it's a Lovecraftan nightmare, full of legacy incompatibilities. For small games such as Cataclysm:DDA I'd use Go (and for system tools and internet services OFC) and for game engines Rust it's or even GC based languages (not Java) can do it well (C# with AOT).

Even Common Lisp it's fine (just look up Trial/Kandria) with SDL2/3 and/or OpenGL bindings (Vulkan ones should be somewhere). Pick SBCL for speed, learn CL, learn about SIMD and optimizations. It can beat C on performance.

https://www.stylewarning.com/posts/nbody/

EDIT: the bindings are cl-vulkan, of course.

Eh, wait. I remember the NeoGeo having a m68k CPU's AND some kind of VPU/PPU a la NES but for 16 bit machines, a 24 bit one. Far more powerful than an Amiga or a Sega Megadrive (Genesis in the US).

C64: https://github.com/jkotlinski/durexforth

It's impressive what you can do in the C64 with just Forth instead of C64 Basic.

For Speccy/ZX80/ZX81, I'm pretty sure they ported the Jupyter ACE one, boosting up the available RAM in the 48k and 128k making Basic almost obsolete in that platform.

TBH I don't have many problems on that and even changing clothes on public beaches in Spain neither. I've gotten far more aroused with a nerdy/metalhead woman talking about geeky stuff (and her outfit) than just average naked bodies where in the end most of the "mistery" runs away and, well, it shows up the whole mediocre shapes everyone has, myself included.

Tons of anorexya/bulimia issues would dissappear once people discovered that, well... almost no one it's a supermodel at all, and even that-supposedly-all-hot-girl for sure has some sort of issue with some spot or whatever in her body.

Kinda like libre operating systems with the code wide open in your hands. Tons of technology wonders with shiny UI's are full of crude patches. Humans are similar.

anthk··on Windows brings out the Rorschach test in everyone (2003)
Hehe, kinda like Canal+ in Europe scrambled with Nagravision where the whole image was a fuzzy outline of snow and b/w shifting striples.

Back in the day tons of people decoded it under PC's and a TV tuner with Wilma/MoreTV under Windows and in a hackier way, XawTV+XawTV Nagra.

anthk··on Sectorforth is a 16-bit x86 Forth that fits in a 512-byte boot sector (2020)
I love both Forth and Lisp but SectorLisp it's far better.

Also, for a small demo, check Eforth under Subleq/Muxleq:

https://github.com/howerj/subleq

edit subleq.fth/muxleq.fth and set these options to 1:

1 constant opt.multi ( Add in large "pause" primitive )
   1 constant opt.editor ( Add in Text Editor )
   1 constant opt.info ( Add info printing function )
   0 constant opt.generate-c ( Generate C code )
1 constant opt.better-see ( Replace 'see' with better version )
1 constant opt.control ( Add in more control structures )
   0 constant opt.allocate ( Add in "allocate"/"free" )
1 constant opt.float ( Add in floating point code )
   0 constant opt.glossary ( Add in "glossary" word )
   1 constant opt.optimize ( Enable extra optimization )
   1 constant opt.divmod ( Use "opDivMod" primitive )
   0 constant opt.self ( self-interpreter [NOT WORKING] )
Then run this to create a new EForth image with float/do...loop and such:

   ./muxleq ./muxleq.dec < muxleq.fth > new.dec
Subleq is the original one, muxleq it's multiplexed. The command it's the same, just replace muxleq with subleq (edit the fth file too).

Usage: ./muxleq new.dec

For a brief help:

     words
On Forth syntax, the EForth Overview PDF will be enough, except for 8086 related code, where here it's different.
