antb123··on Comparing Auth from Supabase, Firebase, Auth.js, Ory, Clerk and Others
Authentik is decent self hosted solution
antb123··on Did you lose your AirPods?
Lost on pont neuf while biking in Paris….

Found the case neatly put next to a mailbox.

Earbud one about 15m / 50 ft away. Earbud 2 appeared in the seine river.. I guess some threw it in the river.

antb123··on The end of the accounting search
I love beancount and have used it for a small business and have used wave accounting (made by some friends in Canada). That said Quickbooks is our main system

antb123··on WHO: No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health
I always thought that this effect was due not causal but to many people using alcohol socially.

One of the biggest killers is loneliness. Have a look at the Harvard life study.

antb123··on WHO: No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health
Also second hand smoke
antb123··on Airbnb removed my negative review
In france they often add sheets for 30 euros per bed.

Airbnb doesn't treat the hosts great either... They auto set new listings to auto approve...

antb123··on Ask HN: What jobs can I have knowing Python?
If you are interested in either Linux, Security or telephony I would say do this.
antb123··on We must return to an economy fueled by innovation, rather than disruption
++ taxi companies were corrupt due to the taxi medallion system.
antb123··on Reclaiming the lost art of Linux server administration
reliability + security. performance is poor they were designed for batch.
antb123··on SSH Bastion Host Best Practices
I am doing a pilot of the same thing.

so far I am mostly using tailscale + firewall. Using a firewall directly on the host as you mentioned seemed a bit dangerous - although we are trying it on a few servers. For now cloud provider firewall + tailscale.

antb123··on U.S. SEC rejects Valkyrie, Kryptoin Bitcoin trusts
And options that have a 15% spread and rip the face off retail investors are ok?

Total nontransparent markets such as the pink sheets? Fingerprinting VWAP trades by institutions and then front running them?

SEC likes to protect the status quo

antb123··on U.S. SEC rejects Valkyrie, Kryptoin Bitcoin trusts
taxes should be fine as there are no dividends. High fees depends on the broker. Interactive Brokers has good canadian coverage. The issue I have seen is more to do with FX rates offered by retail brokers arent great.
antb123··on Web3? I have my DAOts
USDT: $77B USDC, 41 + BUSD 14, + TUSD 1.2 + PAX 1 = $57B and growing faster and follow US regulations.
antb123··on Web3? I have my DAOts
USDC? and BUSD have been growing faster and are US regulated.
antb123··on Running a Law Firm on Linux
Fujitsu automated scanner I got working pretty well.

Agree with the rest.

I mostly think Lawyers don't really care about technology (except good research tools) and billing tools.

antb123··on Firefox 91
Phoenix for me.. 2002ish... I figured out if I renamed the executable iexplore.exe the company's antivirus scanner would let me run it instead of ie.
antb123··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
I agree - but the answer may lie in extensive bike "Roads" for walkers and bikers.
antb123··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
Oulu Finland... Created equal numbers of separate human and car roads. Very possible in newer cities.

https://www.euronews.com/2021/01/22/meet-the-bike-loving-fin...

antb123··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
Same with New Jersey + train into Manhattan
antb123··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
Japan is great but as the population density is 347 per Km2 it is maybe not 100% comparable except for the north.
antb123··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
After living in Europe for a while Toronto is "ok" but still very car dependent.

I would point to Scandinavia (Finland, Denmark, etc) and parts of France and Germany as places that have cars but maintain walkable, bikeable cities.

antb123··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
Walkable is good... Bikeable is even better
antb123··on AWS's Egregious Egress
And they do the same with some of their VPN/firewall products which are totally over priced except compared with self hosted products
antb123··on AWS's Egregious Egress
Except unlike google play for android there are a lot of competitive alternatives.
antb123··on What’s Driving the Stock, Bond and Housing Markets?
Debt to GDP is the normal ration to watch

https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/households-debt-t...

But I wonder if it is still a good measure as much of that new GDP is flowing to the 1%.

antb123··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2020?
unfortunately everything that is above 2% interest in our zero yield environment takes some risk. However I agree.

Best for me is EU crowd funding sites for real estate. Typical yield is 12-20%. So called "Hard money". Banks in europe don't touch this after the 80s blow ups.

Nexo - popular in the crypto world takes the funds and puts them there (but keeps 2-3%) as well as payday loans for eastern europeans.

antb123··on Software Engineering principles to make teams better
Imagine if we made bridges this way... Lets just knock it down and rebuild. Who cares about cost or traffic.

In some ways software engineering is so immature compared with other engineering disciplines.

I believe more in boy scout - "if you touch it leave it better than when you arrived".

:-)

antb123··on Europe's Software Problem
As a foreigner in France... Several things seem very anti-startup. Despite having a cool StationF co-working place.

In France (Paris) its impossible to rent without earning 3 times your rent in after tax salary.

Lots of decent programmers - but if you hire them its very hard (impossible) to lay them off on a employment contract.

If you don't give them an employment contract they can't rent an apartment.

As a Director you can be held personally responsible (no corporate protection) from non salary payment or other debts.

It is very complex to give shares or options to your employees without large tax implications.

result? StationF is mostly large companies. When you hire people you really need the help of a lawyer to protect yourself.

antb123··on El Salvador to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender
1) information - which might be scary. 2) government control of some kind -
antb123··on Bitcoin’s reliance on stablecoins harks back to the Wild West of finance
Probably no depositor insurance but whatever.
