anshorei··on Tell HN: We Need Robots.txt but for AI
> have the model output contain 90% of the original training content verbatim

considering the size of a model is but a fraction of the size of the training data, this statement is in no way accurate

anshorei··on California man fined for selling maps of property boundaries without a license
To me my house is worth a lot more than it is to the market because to me it has an emotional value. A mandatory buyout assumes that people do not have emotional bonds with their homes. Do you suggest one adjusts their estimate of the value twice, or thrice as high to prevent a mandatory buyout? How is that fair to those people?

If everyone waits with getting their supplies until they expect to need them, then there won't be enough in stock to supply everyone with their 7-days of supplies.
anshorei··on Facebook bans Holocaust film for violating race policy
I used quotes to indicate I'm not talking about the war itself but about the surveillance state established in the aftermath of 9/11 (and shenanigans such as the pushing of mentally ill people into acts of terrorism they would never have committed without interference), which is the clear parallel politicians themselves want to draw when they say "war on domestic terror" (unless you believe they want to start another civil war by deploying troops in the states). Same as one would with "war on drugs".
anshorei··on Facebook bans Holocaust film for violating race policy
No, but the opposition that the left once fronted to the NSA's surveillance has withered in the past ten years or so and (some) republicans have picked up the slack. Not too long ago the "war on terror" was considered to be the road to authoritarianism, now democrats are openly championing making it a new domestic war on terror. To those who opposed the war on terror from the beginning it's scary how quickly this opposition was abandoned by some once they could be the ones to wield it.

anshorei··on Flat-to-curved screens have an identity crisis
Maybe it'd be better if that small kid asked you what a goldfish is and you could answer them. I do not want my child to be educated by computers. Asking my dad things about nature, the world and history as a small kid have resulted in conversations that I still cherish to this day. And no formulaic robot response can ever do that justice. In my memories the best responses were when he nudged me to find the answer with questions in return.

anshorei··on BlackRock bitcoin private trust
> mismanagement and scams

Just because some coins are mismanaged or are scams does not speak for the technology in itself. Only to the fact that a lot of crypto "investors" don't actually understand crypto.

anshorei··on Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill
You don't need to believe that the current state of affairs is "fundamentally ok, or very close to it", quite to the contrary. What you need to believe is that the current state of affairs could be made much worse if one is not careful.

I think most people agree that through history we've made a slow climb up a mountain. And it's always easier to fall down, than it is to continue climbing. One could look down into the abyss and say "we must be careful not to trip", or one could look up at the top of the mountain and say "we must get there at any cost". In this metaphor I'd say the revolutionary would be looking at another peak in the mountain range and say "we must descend into the abyss if we want to make it there".

Ant colonies would like to disagree. As would chimpanzees. Peace is harder to achieve than you imagine.
anshorei··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
Because there are scenarios where you need to go over the speed limit to keep yourself and others safe

On top of that I personally want as little "smart" in my car as possible, so I'd rather they didn't pass such regulation.

The fundamental core of conservatism is exemplified in Chesterton's Fence, the meaning of which comes down to "make changes with extreme caution", not "don't make changes at all". The inverse of conservatism is the desire for revolutionary change, which is not the same as progressivism (though it's certainly a popular idea with some). Anti-industrialism (e.g. the Ludites) was conservative. Environmentalism can be conservative. Politics has muddied the true meanings of "progressive" and "conservative".
anshorei··on Covid learning loss has been a global disaster
Except being forced to wear masks does interfere, and I'm not just talking about the kids. The kids need to be able to see the faces of the adults around them.
anshorei··on Good genes are nice, but joy is better (2017)
I think he means the inverse: for people able to find joy despite adverse circumstances.

More importantly, I would say, it's likely innate to us that we are unhappy without adverse circumstances. I.e. for there to be brightness there needs to be darkness.

No, it's all a ruse by companies that want to sell your data.

I grew up with "don't use your real name online", "don't post pictures of yourself", etc. And I still believe that's how it should be.

anshorei··on California bill would let parents sue social media companies for addicting kids
- If they aren't old enough to not wander off, they shouldn't be playing in the street without supervision.

- Use adblock. But even with it I wouldn't let my children use Youtube or Tiktok. They shouldn't be spending that time behind a screen.

I've seen acquaintances use iPads as nannies for their children ("have to do the dishes, here's mum's iPad") and I find that grossly irresponsible. Why would you want your kids to have access to an online video platform anyway? Until they capable of discerning what's worth their time I don't think it's healthy for them to have access. And I have to admit that I'm still having a hard time discerning what's worth my time.

How about: they don't want to lose their jobs.

And they don't have to cover up a lab leak, nearly all of them are not involved in any lab leak to cover up, most may just be unwilling to believe that it could've been a leak for personal convenience.

As someone who considers themselves an outside onlooker, I disagree. Trump allowed all of the tribal people to out themselves. It's made it a lot easier to find people who stick to their principles and praised/criticized him where appropriate.
anshorei··on Are popular toxicity models simply profanity detectors?
Reminds me of AoE chat filters, which aren't satisfied with censoring specific words, but literally just any words that resemble it. Which one looks more offensive to you?

"Hold on, my dock is nearly up" "Hold on, my ** is nearly up"

Censorship can actually make things MORE offensive. (other censored words include "but" and "come")
