anonymousnotme··on LibreWolf – A fork of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
I also don't see all the excitement about ETP and similar. I have one profile that has javascript and cookies disabled and I do 90% of my browsing via that. I mostly just read text...

I have another profile that I use to is less locked down that use that might need cookies and javascript. One can use plugins like noscript and enable on per site basis.

That is part of why FF is having user drops. There should be a way to easily set a bunch of preferences in bulk for privacy/security or whatever one wants.

I like the mention of large institutional customers. Is there a way where mozilla can have companies sponsor firefox to be open so that these companies do have to deal with google and MS control and any of the crap that do to try to control it. I guess it is more so that google does not have control because MS is now using chrome engine.
anonymousnotme··on California legalized weed 5 years ago, but illicit market still thrives
One problem is that cannabis is still not legal at the federal level. One can't buy legal cannabis product anonymously in CA at any of the legal stores and they keep track of what you buy as far as I know. So, feds can easily get a court order to get all transactions, then charge/arrest all customers. I wanted to try some in pill or tincture form for health reasons, but decided not to because of this. I understand that one needs to prove one's age at the door, not sure why they need to track whether and what one purchased. If I buy alcohol at the store, I don't get asked for ID (I am more than 42 years old) or if when I see peopled asked for ID, the store does not record the name and so forth. Also, think about potential identity theft if all of the front one one's ID is copied...
anonymousnotme··on Ask HN: If the Internet were redesigned today, what changes would you make?
I agree. In my opinion, the number one thing that needs to be done is to ensure that email can only be sent encrypted. I have had the following information sent unencrypted over email in recent years: 1. medical/health information. 2. sensitive personal financial information. 3. HR related information. 4. Billing information. 5. payrol information. I basically refuse to give out email to health care providers or any corporate entity because I can't be sure what they will put in plain text email. I have to carefully explain to them that email is not encrypted and I have to explain what encryption is, some get it some don't. I am also trying to get friends and family to encrypt because I am also concerned that they will put health/medical etc into the email, so far no takers on encrypting. It takes like 15-30 minutes to do it the first time and 5-10 minutes for each contact (just need to send and verify fingerprint). Email is great in that it is federated and not centrally controled, the encryption needs to get fixed. I would suggest somebody create an SMTP server that will only accept encrypted connections and will scan and reject any received email that is plain text; i.e. will not store the plain text and will issue appropriate SMTP code indicating that it is not encrypted.

Aren't both XMPP and matrix networks decentralized? XMPP has been around since 1999 according to wikipedia. It is my understanding that providers could keep metadata/logs about accounts involved.

I forgot to mention that I removed the carpeting myself and even though I used a very well rated HEPA vacuum; the crap that I found under and in the carpeting was disgusting. It was like there was a beach party or something. After see that I would remove any carpeting from a home that I owned and I would not rent a place that had carpeting.

one can definitely do something about dust mites. I thought I had a cold, flu or something and could not breath comfortably because of the congestion; I tried cold medicine and allergy medicine and it did not help. I ended up searching internet at 2am and found out about dust mites. They and their poop will be in any sort of cloth material. Think matress, sheets, etc. enclose your matress in a 6 side dust mite proof matress cover. Supposedly matresses will accumulate 15 or 20 pounds of dust mites and their poop; think about how much that is. Also, your flaked off skin in food for them. You need to clean your sheets in 130 degree F water temperature to kill them. Same with all pieces of bedding; needs to be dust mite proof and properly cleaned to rid of them. Get a pillow cover that is dust mite proof. You can get dust mite proof comforter cover as well. Also, carpeting below bed could house them and their poop. I switched to hard flooring. Anyway, you can definitely do something about the dust mites. After doing this, problem went away and I slept much better.
