anony999··on Meta’s behavioral ads will finally face GDPR privacy reckoning in January
A gentle reminder that GDPR is not really just about the annoying cookie banner(which most of the time are not GDPR compliant anyway).
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
>> Isn’t USB-C at high power kind of expensive per watt?

I don't think it's too expensive if you consider the environment impact not to mention the bad user experience caused by multiple chargers. I also believe at certain point the economies of scale should make it less expensive.

anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
yeah but only recently offered an alternative charging method (magsafe) along with USB-C
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
If your gaming laptops needs more than 240w you could use multiple 240w chargers. I believe gaming laptops use multiple chargers anyway.
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
The issue with wireless charging is the waste of energy and lack of fast charging.
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
If only AirPower wouldn't have been a such failure.
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
I believe today's iphones are larger than the first iphones. Am I wrong? Not to mention the Samsung high-end stuff.
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
>> The question is: could e.g. apple create a port which is significantly superior to USB-C, the way lightning was superior to Micro-USB?

I think there is already one: MagSafe/MagSafe2. Is it worth a new pile of chargers/wires along usb-c? I think no. Even apple discontinued it for a while.

anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
>> I'm honestly only worried about charging speed on laptops and tablets.

What kind of tablet needs more than 240w ? I think that's what Alienware uses as well so I doubt you will ever need more than that. Not to mention that the trend going towards more efficient electronics/chips etc.

anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
Apple just started doing that. It put usb-c on the newer macbooks along with its old/back from the dead magnetic connector.
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
Laptops still ship with various power bricks/connectors.
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
Apparently Apple is even slower than the slow bureaucrats
anony999··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
There are still laptops with various charger types not to mention digital cameras and other electronics that could use usb-c pd but refuse to adopt it. I think the law should be expanded to any kind of electronic device that whose power requirements can be satisfied by the usb-c specifications.
anony999··on It's the Worst Time to Buy a Home in a Generation for Americans, US Survey Shows
>> There is a shortage of handy people is my take.

I don't think that. The housing prices are so high due "network effects". The land costs more than the house and everyone wants the same land parcel. I would definitely buy a land parcel and build a nice house but that parcel's almost 4 times more expensive than 2 bedroom flat so I stick to the overpriced 2 bedroom for now.

anony999··on 230K Chinese “persuaded to return” from abroad to establish Extraterritoriality
Traveling during a pandemic is not normal so I find the advice not to travel back home during a pandemic is totally normal. Doing otherwise puts everyone at risk (the traveler, people who he/she interacts with during the journey and the host/home country)
anony999··on Germany's blanket data retention law is illegal, EU top court says
Who is 100% sovereign? Any kind of treaty makes you less "sovereign". I believe it's the same question about freedom. Are you a free person if you have a job, pay mortgage or marry someone?
anony999··on Germany's blanket data retention law is illegal, EU top court says
Technically the answer is yes. In practice I believe there would be civil war before that happens.
anony999··on TikTok is manipulative, addictive, and harmful to privacy
This guy has found out the benefits/features of free social media. I don't know why he bothers to mention the name. It could as well be Meta(FB, Instagram) or TW. The last part is really laughable...

>> There is also the matter of lack of consent, as children are sometimes too small to understand what is going on ....

That being said I believe in the EU at least they will have to change a few things.

anony999··on Who owns Tesla’s data?
>> the first thing I will be doing is yanking the damn cellular modem out of it

That may be illegal just like it's illegal to tamper with consumer electronics/HDMI devices

anony999··on AMD passes Intel in market cap
Tesla still has an "early adopter" and tech aura(IMHO). I wouldn't say it's seen as luxury in Europe. I believe they sell well in Europe because they have the best batteries/range and little competition. I believe once (if) Mercedes and the other brands ramp up production on their electric cars Tesla will have a very hard time competing. They have to deliver either better tech or better value(price). They cannot compete on "luxury" or brand. Tesla itself markets as a tech company (to investors and everyone else). It sells the first move advantage(i.e. battery tech, economy of scale)
anony999··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
I stand corrected. It was Crockford not Eich.
anony999··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
they work locally(local network via app or physical buttons) unless you want to use it remotely via internet. The annoying thing is that it still forces you to "create an account" when you set it up. This was not required 4 years ago but it's required now.
anony999··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
The innovations in this area are incremental so you won't get the best out of it now. Investment into bending oled already went into smartphones so migrating it to laptops doest require signifiant capital. I would take this over a new set of "emoji innovation" and new OS skin/theme anytime.

I must confess that I like bending/folding screens and "rolling screens" even more (i.e. for TVs). I would fold my iphone if I could(assuming that the screen would not get worse) and I would love to double the screensize of my macbook air or shink it into an ipad.

>> Facebook manages quite well with PHP.

I didn't say you can't make it work. You can build great stuff using just bash scripts. I'm pretty sure you can have success with any programming language. That doesn't mean it's the "best" way to do it.

>> Maybe it's your fault you didn't learn how to use modern PHP practices which have been well-documented for over a decade now

I doubt it's my fault. I'm not "special". I think PHP is prone to bugs and bad practices both due language design and bad documentation.

anony999··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
Have you tried a more "modern" language recently? By trying I mean using it for more than 6-10 months. I've been one of the PHP "supporters" until I've found Go and Rust. PHP was really nice to get into programming and make a spaghetti website but the language itself and the ecosystem always felt like a hacking project.

The killer feature of PHP has always been the hosting ecosystem. A simple FTP upload would do the job without knowing much about the hosting infrastructure. Recently we've got that kind of "serveless" experience for other languages as well but the deploying is proprietary and the providers are very few. I'm aware only of Google Cloud Run.

As for JavaScript even its inventor said it's time to move on. It's time for a new language and a new DOM interface. Maybe we can fix the "language" issue with WASM but we are still left with the DOM.

>> People already see some value in Teslas self-driving technology. And that value will continue to go up for a long time. Up to the point where you tell your car "Hey, go get me a pizza".

You are aware that real self driving(L5) is not possible without some AI breakthroughs, right? All the promises you see from Elon are just pure BS. Your tesla has issues seeing a big truck straight in front of the driver lane so you can forget the "Hey, go get me a pizza" command.

I can't really see many reasons to buy a Tesla except its propulsion technology (i.e. big batteries). I doubt that's enough to compare it with the iPhone which was really more about software than hardware. Tesla software/user experience is not significantly better than a dumb car with carplay or just an ipad fixed on board. The only way for Tesla to win more market share is for the competition to ignore/defy the wanna be EV consumers.

anony999··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
what makes it so hard for "self driving" cars to avoid frontal collusions?
anony999··on FCC: TikTok is unacceptable security risk and should be removed from app stores
I think things will move in the right direction. Next we should see Europe ban meta apps in Europe. Let's own our data again. Make the apps store data locally only.
anony999··on The euro has tumbled near parity to the US dollar
Could you say that it encourages local supply chains?
anony999··on The euro has tumbled near parity to the US dollar
Is this bad? Many said the EUR strength was a curse for most of the EU states (i.e. Greece, Italy etc) except Germany.
