anonred··on Apple is quietly pushing a TV ad product with media agencies
Et tu, Apple? Although I predict that in true Apple style, they’ll somehow manage to make ads fashionable in 3-5 years.
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
You might be underestimating normalization of deviance in society. Meta’s already demonstrated that the younger generation will adopt VR headsets for gaming. “Dorkiness” is very unlikely to be a sufficient barrier here.
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
Good thing both are non-issues if you’re sitting in an office chair and using AR video passthrough mode.
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
Exactly. The cost of my WFH monitor setup alone was more than what Meta’s asking for the Pro.
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
You’ll be happy to learn that people are actively thinking about and working on accessibility for AR/VR. And if it’s something you feel strongly about, there’s companies and teams that are hiring specifically for this role.
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
What tech and/or societal changes would be needed to reach a world where a fair amount of user generated content is spatial (as opposed to 2D)?
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
Isn’t that just the definition of network effect? Meta is clearly betting that at a certain critical mass not owning a VR headset in a professional environment will be like not owning a webcam.
anonred··on Meta Meets Microsoft
Surprise: you can already do this in Meta’s Workrooms. Opening a private interactive window to your computer while in a VR meeting works as expected, although it’s just as obvious as when you do it in a video call…
anonred··on Googling 'cancer genetics conferences' only returns ads
Unironically, the worst nightmare I had recently was that Kagi went bankrupt. I can’t imagine going back to a search engine that treats its users as poorly as Google.
anonred··on The Remote Pop-In (2021)
I’ve had lackluster results with hosting weekly office hours. A grand total of 2 engineers showed up, both on my direct team, out of 100+ ICs in my org over the course of 2 months. But your mileage will vary depending on workplace culture I suppose.
anonred··on I will now send this to beginner programmers
You mean the retention rate for each learning method? Those are mutually exclusive… I guess this is a good example of OP’s claim that reading is only 10% effective.
anonred··on Why do so many bikes end up underwater?
Most scooters are decently heavy, maybe 40-50 lbs. Carrying one some distance to a river while it beeps at you probably takes enough effort to deter casual hooligans.
anonred··on Fake Dog for Home Security
I would shoot a warning shot into the air. But maybe at that distance it wouldn’t be clear enough and that’d just escalate the situation..
anonred··on Google Search Results Plagued with spam “.it” domains
Other search engines allow you to block domains from showing up in the results. I’ve switched to Kagi out of frustration and honestly it’s as good or better than Google just because of that one feature.
anonred··on An ex-Googler's guide to dev tools (2020)
Summer interns using “ex-Company” is a clever hack but so infuriating to me. It’s like vacationing in France for 3 months and calling yourself French.

There’s a special place for people who use it to be misleading when advertising their products. (A very popular iOS app dev did this many years ago and I’ll never use their app out of principle.)

anonred··on Don't be that open-source user, don't be me
Bug report templates work wonders. Ours is just some checkboxes and a few lines for OS version, package manager, etc. but it’s been effective at filtering out low effort reports.
anonred··on Codeball – AI-powered code review
So I dry ran it against a tiny open source repo I maintain and it worked on exactly 0 of the last 50 PRs. For example, it didn’t auto-approve a PR that was just deleting stale documentation files... The idea sounds nice, but the execution is a bit lacking right now.
anonred··on Using a "proper" camera as a webcam
Sorry, but have you actually compared the two? As another point of anecdata, I immediately noticed that my new coworker was using a proper camera during our first 1:1. The depth of field and crispness really stands out from your typical MacBook Pro webcam.
anonred··on Free stuff makes us irrational
The goodwill of your testers is likely worth far more than the marginal revenue you’d gain from having them pay full price.

I was in a similar position many years back and learned the hard way that people _absolutely loathe_ when you take things away from them.

anonred··on What Google search isn’t showing you
> Danny Sullivan, Google’s “public liaison for search,” told me that people using Google to find Reddit threads is actually evidence that search is working the way it should.

Cherry-picked quotes aside, this part of the article really did make me roll my eyes. Users self-censoring searches to a _single website_ because the rest of Google’s results are so unusable is somehow a feature, not a bug.

The same way that Google improperly handling quoted searches and returning pages _without that exact string_ is somehow a feature, not a bug.

anonred··on Ask HN: Is your company considering inflation in this year's comp review cycle?
I’m not the GP but those numbers are very common for refreshers at FAANG, assuming that it vests over 4 years.
anonred··on On Leaving Facebook
There’s an art to conveying a position on a topic without alienating one’s audience.
anonred··on I Spent Hundreds of Hours Working in VR
It would be useful to include what headset you tried in your comment. Consumer VR has progressed a lot in the last few years wrt resolution, refresh rate, and form factor.
anonred··on I Spent Hundreds of Hours Working in VR
Why is SideQuest and AppLab not sufficient for “unapproved” games?
anonred··on The absurdity of renting a car will no longer be tolerated
Uber and Lyft have car rental options, although the experience between the two differs quite a bit, having used both in the past few months.

Uber car rentals is just a proxy for traditional car rental services like Hertz. All the aforementioned problems like reservation flakiness and weird fees applies.

On the other hand, Lyft car rentals is operated in-house and feels delightful in comparison. I usually reserve a few days before, take a Lyft to the fleet HQ with the provided credit, and roll out in <10m. Overall a super nice experience both times I’ve used it.

anonred··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Your project is fascinating, but 8000 queries/hr is just over 2 queries/sec. Even bursting up to 10x that (20 QPS), it doesn’t seem surprising that it can run on consumer hardware? Am I missing something?
anonred··on South Africa’s omicron coronavirus outbreak subsides as fast as it grew
Genuine question as I haven’t been following COVID news closely. What’s the hospitalization rate and long term effects from Omicron COVID? Do we have sufficient data to suggest that it’s milder than Delta etc?
anonred··on My worst tech interview experience
> I was interviewing at various places, and I got an interview with the Apple Watch team

Funnily enough, I also interviewed with the Apple Watch team around the same time and had a similar negative experience.

I was struggling with a problem on the whiteboard and paused to ask a question. Instead, one of the interviewers (it was a pair) turned to the other and said “I wish the Calendar complication on my watch would show when this meeting ends”

All the other interviewers that day were great, but it just takes a few bad apples… Even though it’s been years and I’ve had a nice tenure at FAANG, I’ll never consider joining Apple after that experience.

anonred··on Masked email from Fastmail and 1Password
In addition, wildcard forwarding isn’t a perfect substitute because email spambots love sending to addresses like webmaster@mydomain.com or john.doe@mydomain.com. The number of permutations they try is varied enough that an explicit allowlist is a must.
anonred··on What it's like to spend 40-50 hours in VR every week
It’s not well known, but the Quest 2 firmware does support intermediate IPD settings, so it’s straightforward to 3D print an adapter for the lenses:
