anonova··on Open-sourcing Sorbet: a fast, powerful type checker for Ruby
> To enable static checking with srb, add this line (called a sigil) to the top of your Ruby file:

> # typed: true

Isn't this called a directive/pragma? A sigil is a symbol on a name.

Either way, I'm excited to see this finally out after seeing the past presentations on it.

anonova··on Announcing Building Git
The author discusses this in episode 13 (2019-03-24) of the podcast _The Yak Shave_ at 22:37: http://yakshave.fm/13

From what I understand, Ruby is highly accessible and has a standard library that covers what's used in the book.

anonova··on React Router v5
I've never been a fan of React Router (mostly I don't get why defining routes with components is a good thing) and have been pleasantly surprised with how well Curi (https://curi.js.org/) works. It's nice to see it's not completely tied to a JS framework.

I wouldn't mind trying out Semaphore for some open source projects. On the community open source page [1], from what I understand, you offer a free service, but the pricing page [2] says that it's not free yet?

> ... rely on near/far vision systems developed by Intermec and other companies to read a code the size of a postage stamp from up to 150 meters away.

Does anyone know of these super long range scanners (e.g, 150 m)?

Looking through Honeywell's products, the Granit 1280i [1] claims 16.5 m, which is impressive but not the 150 m mentioned above. I'm curious how aiming is even possible with what I would assume to be an incredibly narrow field of view.

Funnily, if you look at the description in the app store, it makes it look like a completely skippable update, especially if you don't use Messages.

anonova··on 2017 JavaScript Rising Stars
I'd expect if it gets popular enough, it'll have to go through a rebranding, given the name and assets are from the video game Overwatch [1]. Though I guess it never stopped Shopify with batman.js [2].

anonova··on Ripple Slides After Coinbase Says Not Adding New Crypto Coins
To name a few:

* "1.1.4 Decentralization"

Ripple controls what nodes are used on their network (validators). Can you run a validator? Sure, but note that Ripple, and thus the network, aren't going to use it anyway [validator]:

> At present, Ripple (the company) cannot recommend any validators aside from the 5 core validators run by Ripple

As I mentioned in another comment tree, this is a distributed network, not a decentralized one.

[validator]: https://ripple.com/build/rippled-setup/

[registry]: https://ripple.com/dev-blog/validator-registry/

* "6.1.2 Token Utility"

XRP current has no useful use cases. Institutions experimenting with Ripple are not using the public network but their own private RippleNet, which does not use XRP tokens [ripplenet].

[ripplenet]: https://ripple.com/files/ripplenet_brochure.pdf

* "6.2.3 Team Ownership: The team stake retained by the team is a minority scale."

Currently, 38 of the 100 billion total XRP is in circulation [marketcap]. The developers were "gifted" 80% of all XRP upon its creation [distribution]. Ripple and its owners still hold the majority of all XRP.

anonova··on Ripple Slides After Coinbase Says Not Adding New Crypto Coins
Given XRP goes against their current "Digital Asset Framework" for adding new tokens/coins, I don't see it being added anytime soon without revision: https://www.gdax.com/static/digital-asset-framework-2017-11....

anonova··on High Sierra macOS freezing and stops
Wow, thanks for this suggestion! I was having some major graphical issues on a 2013 Macbook Pro with a GT 750M to the point where I was disabling GPU hardware acceleration in everything, the worst being flashes of an old framebuffer when trying to playback video. The NVIDIA drivers definitely seem way better so far.
anonova··on Analog For The People: Synth Master Tatsuya Takahashi On Engineering Fun

anonova··on Meet the Counter Strike e-sports team where everyone is over 60
The stats on their site (https://lenovo-silversnipers.com/) seem off, e.g., BirDie has 82 hours of play time and 199 kills. That's averaging ~25 mins between kills! Surely, they're not _that_ bad.

Though there's no built-in functionality in MuseScore to do this, you can write a plugin that controls the mix for each voice. See this forum topic, which is quite similar to what you're trying to do: https://musescore.org/en/node/56916
anonova··on Audacity 2.2.0 Released
Ardour (https://ardour.org/) and LMMS (https://lmms.io/) are probably the two most popular open-source DAWs. I also really like MuseScore (https://musescore.org/) for composition.

anonova··on Apollo Client 2.0
Nice to see a lot of improvements! I spent some time today to upgrade an app from Apollo 1.9. I ran into some issues if you use TypeScript.

The typings used in the library are not listed as dependencies, so I had to manually install them. This may get fixed soon (https://github.com/apollographql/apollo-link/pull/171), though I had to install three @types packages: graphql, lodash.flowright, and zen-observable.

The ApolloProvider parameter for client is also broken: https://github.com/apollographql/apollo-client/issues/2212

Also, `data.loading` still gets stuck to true. See https://github.com/apollographql/apollo-client/issues/1186, though this issue has repeatedly been opened and closed.

anonova··on Amazon EC2 Elastic GPUs for Windows
I'm currently a beta tester for Nvidia's GeForce Now[1], and it essentially gives you a Windows 2012 R2 VM with Steam installed to play games: Xeon E5-2697 v4 @ 2.30GHz (8 vCPUs allocated), NVIDIA Tesla P40 (24 GB allocated), 16 GB RAM, and 320 GB HDD. Latency is quite decent where I am, about 18 ms to the nearest data center. This is okay for casual, single player games, but it's still too much lag for competitive gaming (CS:GO, PUBG, etc.).

A similar service is LiquidSky[2], which interestingly has a free tier.
