anoncoward111··on Tech Is Splitting the U.S. Work Force in Two
We have made those strides in productivity and they all went to rent seeking and taxation/regulation of small businesses and personal conduct (see also $150 red light cameras and $350,000 school admin salaries)
anoncoward111··on Jean-Paul Sartre Had a Bad Mescaline Trip (2018)
More than plausible, I'd say that's probable.

It reminds me of how the cause of death for Adrian Lamo is officially "undetermined", but the medical examiner notes serum potassium and creatinine levels that are so high (in my informed opinion) that they probably can only be described as "kidney failure" or "lethal injection".

anoncoward111··on Best Buy’s Secrets for Thriving in the Amazon Age (2017)
Really appreciate this insight. This is one of the reasons that I wish corporations died sooner and had less power over the employee.

Employees can provide helpful knowledge to customers in exchange for a wage. The ones who hawk PSP warranties are probably the worst customer advocates, yet aren't the ones being fired....

The helpful employees and loyal customers lose, corporate wins....

Hideous. Glad I don't live in AZ. Imagine combining fascism, cronyism, and puritanism into one.
anoncoward111··on My Losing Battle with Enterprise Sales
Agreed. The beautiful thing is that the power of creating anything is increasingly being put back into the hands of the consumer. We are rapidly approaching the point where anything you could ever want is buyable with the click of the button on Amazon or etc.

I am really glad the days are over where we used to have go negotiate with some sales guy to buy paper for the office :)

anoncoward111··on My Losing Battle with Enterprise Sales
Sales sucks. I have always preferred selling to consumers and handling support in a humane and friendly way.

I simply don't have the moral fibre in me to fuck someone out of their money like a "b2b" guy does, or car salesman does.

anoncoward111··on Elevating user trust in our API ecosystem
I would love to know what connection the "industry leading assessors" have to any Google employees at all. Surely they are completely impartial and unrelated, when 15 to 75 thousand dollars is on the line!
anoncoward111··on Chefs and truck drivers beware: AI is coming for your jobs
I worked a good chunk of time in a mid-sized Italian restaurant with maybe 10 cooks, 10 waiters, and 7 bussers/dishwashers/preppers.

I doubt that right now a robot could do any of the backhouse stuff with the versatility, speed, and durability required to be better than a human chef working for easily less than 40k a year.

I think if we reach a point where one or two laborers can pre-prepare all of the ingredients the night before and the robot cook can just spit out a hot meal in 5 minutes (with one person overseeing a symphony of robo chefs), then AI/robots will win and chefs as a profession will go bye bye.

But until then, the owners will continue to spend on quality labor because that's the only way they know how to make the meals efficiently.

anoncoward111··on Alarming Decline of Quality Youth Playtime
No doubt about that one :) It goes without saying that their financial security is thoroughly important. Still, all workers in 2019 have diminished purchasing power compared to the amount of hours worked (and commuted)
anoncoward111··on Starting a Company Outside Silicon Valley Just Saved Me $1.1M
How does one reasonably have a need for 40 acres of property? I could see a few acres as being the max needed for reasonable privacy. Are you doing something commercial with the acreage?

I think I did a calculation a few years ago that there is only an acre or two of land on Earth for every single person. When you factor in the acreage that is currently liveable and is actually purchasable, you get a number close to 1/16th acre I imagine.

anoncoward111··on H&R Block and Intuit Lobby Against Free and Simple Tax Filing (2017)
Have done MA's (now-defunct) free e-file and NY state's paper form.

Don't do it, it's a massive waste of time and energy and the chance for human error is massive. I only did mine because Oracle and ADP issued me a completely incorrect W2 and TurboTax doesn't let you submit it with incorrect wages reported.

Luckily though I got all my money back in like 2 months

anoncoward111··on Amazon Ruined Online Shopping
I think anyone who is willing to put their real face and name in front of what they are (re)selling can be trusted more than any fake LLC or profile or ebay user account.

If they have videos on instagram and do a live demo and walk through and you can see who their real friends are, then you can probably trust them as much as currently possible.

I 1million% agree with giving the money to the worker in need, and I myself would opt for the Indian as well if quality is the same.

But, my suspicion is that everyone on beermoney actually has no other income :(

anoncoward111··on Amazon Ruined Online Shopping
>at least I know what I'm getting

Lorddddd I am holding back laughter right now. Ebay is the original defintion of online scamming and counterfeiting.

The real way to do this would be for someone to buy a bulk order from the manufacturer, import it, and then sell it piecemeal with a social media profile that demonstrates legitness and quality of product.

Ebay's fees and lack of quality control add negative value to this transaction.

Of course one wonders why in 2019 the manufacturer doesn't sell direct to consumer

anoncoward111··on Facebook's '10 Year Challenge' Is Just a Harmless Meme–Right?
Why do they need to be Indian? Sure the data would reflect that a plurality of global low wage workers are from India, but there are also plenty of low wage workers who are not ethnically Indian or geographically based in India (such as all of the Americans working on r/beermoney).

anoncoward111··on Job Promotion is a Trap
Wow!! Such civilized culture :) In the US, unless otherwise negotiated, all employees are under the legal term "at will", which means firing/quitting can happen anytime and for any reason. Fortunately I have walked off the job on day one when I thought it was not as described :) But have also been fired plenty of times for assinine bullshit.

Maybe programmers in Cali are able to negotiate different contracts. But like 95% of non-state workers can be fired instantly I imagine in the US.

Cheers!!

anoncoward111··on Job Promotion is a Trap
Totally agree with what you have said. I've been through W2 job interviews that lasted a total of 2 hours. One phone conversation and one in person, offered job on the same day with no waiting games played. This is 100% the exception to the rule.

I would remove multi round interviews with 7 different people and multiple calls backs. The in-person interview should be one and done, just like a music audition.

Why? Because a company can fire me on day one if they want. The idea that we should put $10,000 worth of man hours into screening someone before they begin working, when employees are still legally interchangeable seems kind of like a charade to me.

Employees don't like to see their colleagues fired quickly, but if it's for a deserving reason (candidate couldn't do the things they said they could do in interview) then the team really will move on quickly.

When you're paying out $120,000 a year for people to flip bits, the team accepts that turnover might occur a little bit more frequently that corporate middle management.

anoncoward111··on Job Promotion is a Trap
Companies are already wasting 10x more money and emotional capital with their ridiculous interviewing processes.

I definitely appreciate the sentiment that everyone should negotiate in good faith, but until you are in front of your future manager and they explain very clearly what the job entails (whether virtual or in person), nothing is to be believed.

Wasting a company's time and money is something they already accept. If they didn't, they would optimize their process for minimal time spent.

anoncoward111··on Rappers, sorted by the size of their vocabulary (Updated January 16, 2019)
Literally came here to say this!! I think more of his sound comes from his fast delivery, his different voices, and of course, his ridiculously unique beats. The Damien songs come to mind.

I think X achieves his lyricism through the combination of small and simple words into unique phrases. "Yall been eating long enough now, stop being greedy" is a unique phrase that no other rapper would ever utter, but it isn't made from complex words like Aesop Rock or Eminem would use.

anoncoward111··on A Harvard Astronomer on the Interstellar Object ‘Oumuamua
This is actually a really weird claim. We know now thanks to Kepler that many stars have planets just like our Sun does, but so far we've only been able to see large gaseous planets and a few rocky ones that can be as large as 1.5x Earth.

25% sounds way too high. We have not even found many stars like our own with rocky Earths like our own yet. I am certain we will eventually find them, but I think the number of rocky planets with oxygen atmosphere and liquid water is going to be under 1%.

Life is most likely rare but abundant- 1% of 100 billion is a butt-ton of Earths

anoncoward111··on A Harvard Astronomer on the Interstellar Object ‘Oumuamua
Unlikely that we will ever know for this specific object, but hopefully we will be more poised for future study ;)

Oumuamua is moving way too fast for anything to catch up to it anytime soon. If I remember correctly it's moving about as fast as New Horizons in the 23km/s speed range. You would need lots of years to catch up to it!

anoncoward111··on Ask HN: How to Get IT Job as an Medical Doctor?
Due to your country of citizenship, I think the main option for you is to find remote devops work for a company that will take a chance on you :) A certification won't be too helpful-- you'll just need to convince the owners of a company that you can do what they need.

Alternatively of course you can marry an American and find legit corporate work as a traditional W2 employee :)

Our immigration system is horrible and a national disgrace-- I apologize that the government isn't more welcoming to you.
