anon743448··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
Very different. They were not kidnapped by secret police or held in inhumane conditions in far away jails.
anon743448··on German electrical engineer with green card stripped and 'violently interrogated'
Yeah, all these victims are white. For years, people been treated far worse, their stories shared in social media but it never make it to mainstream media.

Sad but hopefully these stories will bring some positive changes in immigration system for everyone.

anon743448··on We're Still Not Done with Jesus
What I find fascinating is that people seeking their roots and historical family tree always stay within their religion.

Almost all Muslim Pakistanis and Christian Indians somehow trace their family tree back to Middle East during the time period of their prophets. Many times it is obvious that even if they have any middle eastern DNA, it is negligible compared to rest of it. Why not learn about your ancestors who were not of same religion as you.

And why stop at 1400 or 2000 years back. Why not trace it further back.

And in the west, with superiority complex of European culture, many serious Christians get absolutely confused when you tell them that it is amazing how a middle eastern religion took over the entire Europe and the west. Some people even deny that Christianity is middle eastern.

So would real card.

anon743448··on Ask HN: How do I escape homelessness after rebuilding my mental health?
While dramatic, and sometimes necessary to set yourself on fire but most of the times your children will be better off if you push through the storm without burning yourself. They will suffer cold a little longer but watching your parent burn to death will scar them for life.

And that is the problem with child support system. It is ready to burn the father as the first option instead of last resort.

anon743448··on US appeals court rules AI generated art cannot be copyrighted
As sibling comment said, this is not correct.

In wedding and portrait photography, many clients think that they own copyrights to the photos but they don’t and sometimes get in trouble for violating photographers’ copyrights.

anon743448··on Ask HN: How do I escape homelessness after rebuilding my mental health?
I agree but sometimes system is setup in such ways that you can never reliably support your children.

I have met a few people at work who feared jail time whenever there were rumors of restructuring or layoffs. Even with their tech salaries, they had no money leftover for emergency fund. And if they don’t pay child support, they’ll go to jail. How are they supposed to support their children from a jail?

anon743448··on Ask HN: Where do seasoned devs look for short-term work?
People join wrong companies all the time and quit in less than a year. Same goes for companies, plenty of people get laid off during their first year. It sucks but it also gives us more liquid labor market where employees and employers know that they can get out of bad relationships easily. (And it usually favors employers)

One or two stints like that are not a problem. Nor is gap in resume should be an issue. (Yes some old school managers want perfect resume but many more understand that people now take time off to explore other interests, travel, start their own ventures etc)

anon743448··on Ask HN: Any jobs that don't force you to always be advancing career wise?
The key is to keep switching teams. If you stay in same team for a long time, your manager will start pushing you for promotion, either because they like you and start feeling bad for you or maybe they are pressured by their higher ups.
anon743448··on Ask HN: How will uncertain tariff policies impact tech startups and funding?
> Instead, it is stockmarkets outside America to which investors have been dashing. So far this year Europe’s Stoxx 600 index has risen by 12% in dollar terms, and Germany’s dax by 19%. The Hang Seng, which includes many Chinese firms listed in Hong Kong, is also up by 19%.

That is one article I read from The Economist[1] but it doesn't tell how much money actually moved out. I will look for some hard number later.

anon743448··on Ask HN: Would you reapply to a company that ghosted you?
Yes. It is just a broken process or overworked recruiter, nothing personal. Yes, it is rude but that is life.

Use them as opportunity to practice your interview skills. If this time they make an offer and you have another offer, use that to negotiate hire salaries. And if you decide to go with the other company, ghost this company.

anon743448··on Ask HN: How will uncertain tariff policies impact tech startups and funding?
The world is also moving away from American companies. Startups in the US will not grow as fast. European and Chinese markets beat American markets last year, so capital is moving out of the United States.

Probably, harder to raise money or exit.

On the other hand, with lack of regulations, it might be easy to offload cost on to public. I suspect we will see a lot of scammy fintech, environment destroying projects, alternate medicines, and snake oils. I am actually excited and bullish on CRSPR and genetic editing tech.

anon743448··on Ask HN: Why Isn't PHP Dead Yet?
There are some inconsistencies between function names and some quirks. I haven’t used PHP for a while, so cannot recall exact issues. Based on other comments, it seems PHP has resolved many of these problems.

I think most of people saying that other languages are “better” are just repeating outdated information.

anon743448··on Ask HN: Why Isn't PHP Dead Yet?
Indeed. For most projects, you want to start with a framework but that applies to almost all of the languages.
anon743448··on Ask HN: Why Isn't PHP Dead Yet?
PHP is the fastest and cheapest way to get MVP out the door.

Sure there are fast ways to get MVPs out with other languages like Vercel for JavaScript etc. But that is not cheap. And sure you can get a pretty cheap VPS but setting it up for anything non-static websites is time consuming and has potential for errors.

With PHP, you can have your proof of concept out in public for almost free and almost immediately. And once it is working, why bother rewriting the app in a better language unless you run into some kind of limitation.

anon743448··on Ask HN: How much employee resume verification is done in practice?
I had pleasure of interviewing SWE with 20 years of experience. His resume was one page long.

He had helpfully removed details under his old jobs. His resume reflected his communication style. I recommended hiring him.

anon743448··on Ask HN: How much employee resume verification is done in practice?
Yeah, it cost money, they will not spent money on every applicant that applies.
anon743448··on A Letter to the American People
There were many people who felt backstabbed under Biden. Their world was turned upside down and majority of democrats stayed quiet. These people didn’t vote not because they wanted to punish their allies, but because they are still in shock. This is not new for them.

And now majority of democrats are seeing their world turn upside down too. Maybe this will eventually unite and organize the left, maybe not. But Biden has done too much damage to democrats.

anon743448··on Ask HN: If you work for Elon Musk, what keeps you motivated?
Reminds me of people in abusive relationships. From outside everyone wonders why they are not getting away from their abusers. But inside, the victims believe there is nowhere else to go.
anon743448··on Ask HN: Do you practice lucid dreaming?
or you can learn to project your consciousness out of your body during sleep paralysis and experience out of body sensations.
anon743448··on Brazil justice orders ban of video platform Rumble
Exactly, and why would they care if they’re banned in that country.
anon743448··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
This shows the decline in Amazon's customer service. I had several Kindles starting with Kindle Keyboard. At that time, Amazon's service was beyond amazing.

At one point, I had some issue with one of the Kindle while it was past 1 year. Amazon sent overnighted new Kindle for free when I was just hoping they give me some troubleshooting steps.

I stopped using Kindle about 4-5 years ago mostly because of all the bad press especially around them removing purchased books. Now I mostly buy paper books. I also use BOOX e-ink tablet to borrow books from library or newspapers. (BOOX is not ideal but there is no other choice of e-ink tablets that can let you use 3rd party apps, sadly.)

anon743448··on Ask HN: Wantrepreneur who's run out of energy/ideas. What now?
In his case, he holds inventory for his successful stores. He is also big on branding. For example, one of his business is selling plants and the custom made boxes for shipping cost more than plants.

he did mention drop shipping to test out ideas but don’t think any of those businesses took off.

anon743448··on Ask HN: Wantrepreneur who's run out of energy/ideas. What now?
Sell something online.

I have spent more than 20 years working on side hustles. I love tech and enjoyed building various prototypes and games. Building is easy part.

Never fully understood rest of the business, had no sales.

A friend who had done same thing, decided to stop doing that. Instead he started an e-commerce store. Focused on market research, marketing, etc. After his first store took off, he created more stores. He doesn’t care about what he sells, he just cares about revenue.

He is making enough to quit his EM job. He plans to keep adding new stores in his portfolio.

anon743448··on Ask HN: Why does my iPhone show me ads relevant to a dinner conversation?
> people you had dinner with searched for pens and you got connected to them via geo matching, wifi connection etc

I wonder if this can be used to subtly influence others. There’s been a few times where I had been researching something but then my partner brought it up as their original idea.

anon743448··on Pornhub Is Now Blocked in Almost All of the U.S. South
Absolutely, it is sad that almost all human societies normalize violence while sex is a taboo. One explanation I have read is that violent societies wiped out non-violent societies and now we are stuck with it.

Only way to fight glorification of violence would be to be treat violence same way as how sex is treated and over centuries we may end up with more peaceful societies.

anon743448··on Ask HN: Childhood dream vs. your actual job
Childhood dreams change too. iirc, my earliest dreams were to be a photographer, scientist, explorer. My parents eventually convinced me into thinking that being a doctor is the only way to be successful and that was my dream most of my childhood.

Later in my early teen years, I was impressed by technology & business and wanted to do tech start up. My parents again convinced me to stay focused on medicine because I could earn enough from it and do my own business in my 40s.

And then I got into video games and wanted to make my own games. I started to learn some programming on my own and I was good at it. I was never good with biology and chemistry. Eventually I failed to get into medical school and did computer science.

My goal was to make games but I am doing pretty good as a backend-focused fullstack dev.

anon743448··on Suits ignored IT's warnings, so the tech team went for the neck
I worked at one place where we had to deal with a lot of off-hours on call issues. Our manager focused on quick resolution and never let it escalate past her. Most of the time she wanted us to simply reboot service or server. Never had time to find root cause.

It happened a lot affecting our personal lives significantly, waking up in the middle of night just to reboot/restart some service.

Over time, the whole team started ignoring on-call alerts, and worked real slow. Pretending that our internet was down or laptop is not booting up. Longer it took to resolve alerts, our automated systems would start sending alerts to higher up in the chain. Also it started to impact our SLA and other metrics.

Finally, they decided to allocate resources to fix and stabilize the system.
