anon543210··on California’s Roadmap to Modify the Stay-at-Home Order [pdf]
Maybe I'm the idiot but its pretty clear as to whats on the roadmap.

>defines a goal or desired outcome and includes the major steps or milestones needed to reach it.

Yeah its missing some specifics but there are certainly goals stated before the decision to relax the stay at home policy is reached.

Maybe i'm misunderstanding but the entire point of whats outlined is to be prepared for the next wave. Sure we're flattening the curve, and we'll eventually have to relax the stay at home mandate, but its very possible that it will just get out of control again. Until the govt feels they can handle the next wave properly they don't want to take the chance.
anon543210··on Ask HN: Declining the job offer after accepting
I would suggest you keep the job and work on the startup in off hours. Until you have a good idea of how viable the startup will be, just stick at the big company
anon543210··on “Banks are no place for coders”
i don't I feel like every business that doesn't make money directly from technology is like this. In most companies tech is a black box as its hard to directly tie revenue against it.
anon543210··on Slack, I’m Breaking Up with You
i don't understand what this user expected. Killing email, really. Its a messaging service. These have been around since the beginning of the internet.
anon543210··on Is Software Development Really a Dead-End Job After 35-40?
I agree with the author. As someone in their late 30's back in the job market due to joining a few poor startup opportunities, its terrible. Software engineering is one of the few career paths that experience doesn't mean shit. Everyone here is saying yes its not a big deal to answer stupid questions like fizzbuzz, and while I do answer them... it really inconsequential to the job. Yes I have to regularly practice on sites like hackerrank that really have little to do with my capabilities in executing in a real environment, but really its just memorizing and practice that are almost unrelated to my job function.

Sure you can blame people for not keeping up with their skills and knowledge set like mikestew, but a lot of times this is not what you're interviewed on. Its like interviewing companies are so lazy as to not check your references. Most of the time if the interviewer is knowledgable they should be able to weed out people that are lying on their resumes. Maybe the problem is not with the people lying on their resumes and people that are doing the interviewing.

If I could do it over again, I probably would have gone down a different career path and programmed as a hobby.

I'll believe it when I see it
anon543210··on Snapchat Seeks to Raise as Much as $4B in IPO
I disagree in the similarities of Facebook. Snapchat is like twitter but worse. Because it's anonymous and not associated with real names, they don't have an actual relationship graph, unlike twitter they don't have an interest graph. All they really have is your location. Everything is ephemeral so it's going to be even harder to figure out what type of advertising they should actually target. Also we don't know where people spend most of their time in private messages or stories and the only thing they really are focusing on monetizing is stories. Also like Twitter their advertising system can be subverted. Brands and advertisers will go directly to influencers to peddle their products vs going through snapchat. Also at the time Facebook was yet to introduce advertising on their mobile product. I believe Snapchat will have a much harder road to monetization than Facebook had.
anon543210··on Ask HN: Fired at 51 weeks by prominent startup?
>They likely offered you an inducement (severance pay) in exchange for you agreeing to a contract that precludes disparagement or other action.

Yes this was the case.

This actually happened to me as well. I was released about one month prior to my shares vesting, but they didn't contest my unemployment. Still its a real bs thing to do. I wish I could say something publicly and let others know about the mess that place was but I decided against it. They also made me sign papers prior to getting my final check and vacation pay that said I wouldn't take any action against them.
