anon49124··on Trivial authentication bypass in libssh leaves servers wide open
I never heard of this library before. Most projects seem to use libssh2. https://github.com/libssh2/libssh2
anon49124··on The Bredesen protocol for treating Alzheimer’s
"A cure" is a very deceptive headline; it's an allegedly curative personalized protocol, The Bredesen Protocol™.
anon49124··on The next big restaurant chain may not own any kitchens
Hmm: looking at 19th century shops where only merchants picked products to self-checkout today, that seems like the trend. Everyone will end up doing everything themselves.
anon49124··on Ask HN: What file-format(s) do you prefer for highly technical ebooks?
PDF and ePub. LaTeX if you want to get fancy and OSS.

anon49124··on In Poor, Rural Communities, Fleeing Hurricane Michael Was Tough
Not everyone qualifies for SS because either they didn't pay in long or enough. There's thousands of people working well into their 70's and 80's in menial jobs because SS doesn't cover their living expenses. For example, I'm worried about my mom because her finances are dwindling.
anon49124··on In Poor, Rural Communities, Fleeing Hurricane Michael Was Tough
Because human activities are error-prone, evacuations cause an increase in fatalities; so any evacuation decision has to be balanced against the risks of sheltering locally.
anon49124··on Why women are excited about Dyson’s new $500 hairstyling tool
I'm equally excited about AvE tearing it apart and ripping Dyson a new one.
anon49124··on He was lost. Rebuilding a 1980s Chuck E. Cheese robot in his bedroom saved him
TBH, at about 5, those clunky animatronics gave me nightmares.
anon49124··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
91% for millionaires, like the good ol' days.
anon49124··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
Decatrillion dollar deficits.
anon49124··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
Stupid^3. When (not if) the dollar is dropped, within a decade, as the de-facto intl currency, the American economy, combined with the insane and unsustainable public and private debt, will tank like nothing before.

anon49124··on Is Saudi money becoming radioactive?
Hollywood, YC, Google and anyone else whom collaborates with and enables the Chinese regime has such a level of moral turpitude that they're either fools or sociopaths.
anon49124··on Computer Programmers: Occupational Outlook Handbook:: U.S
Employment of computer programmers is projected to decline 7 percent from 2016 to 2026. Computer programming can be done from anywhere in the world, so companies sometimes hire programmers in countries where wages are lower.

Also, this lacks consideration of automation of programming itself when deep learning can listen to users and build interfaces and APIs directly and faster than any human ever could.

anon49124··on Is Saudi money becoming radioactive?
From my understanding, Jamal Khashoggi, a regime insider journalist was disappeared and allegedly dismembered by a hit squad of 15 assassins in the Saudi Ankara embassy, according to Ankara/Turkish police, because he violated an unwritten rule: once an insider, one must never be critical of or disobey the royals. His "self-imposed" exile didn't diminish his insider status in the minds of the regime. His gruesome murder (and possibly torture) was intended to send a message.
anon49124··on Is Saudi money becoming radioactive?
To be fair, China disappears dissidents too.
anon49124··on Transgenic plants could make for more nutritious salmon
If they're then farmed anything like Norwegian-owned salmon, which destroy the local ecosystem with underwater clouds of shit, sea lice, excessive antibiotics, higher levels of toxins than wild-caught (PCBs, dioxins, toxaphene, dieldrin and mercury), feed preservatives, lower Omega-3 levels than wild fish and corrupt politicians pretending everything is okay, adding more GMOs to the mix seems like putting lipstick on a fish.

Corporate crooks. Fail.
anon49124··on Chances DNA can be used to find your family? Sixty percent and rising
It seems like there should be biological parent-offspring "escrow" such that there's no hard feelings or unwelcome awkwardness.
anon49124··on Chances DNA can be used to find your family? Sixty percent and rising
GATTACA here we come. People discovering and discriminating against genetic traits.

anon49124··on 5000 financial services jobs to move from Britain after brexit
When people can't or won't confront the root sources of their ills (corrupt politicians monopolized by rich people), they scapegoat all sorts of other things to get their angst out unproductively: attacking ideas, movements and people. Populist fascists come along promising all sorts of cures, when they generally make things worse. After failing spectacularly, rebuilding from scratch is usually necessary. Repeat every 1-3 generations. And so it goes.
anon49124··on Capitalism is becoming less competitive
True. There's never has, and never will be, any "pure," utopian socialism nor libertarian anarchism, just messy reality with varying levels of gotchas, power concentrations, totalitarianism and corruption. The best people can do is diffuse power and install individuals whom are fair, reasonable and put society / greater good before personal gain... without many of these sorts of people, the crooks win and tear civil society down.

anon49124··on Yossi Appleboum on How Bloomberg is Positioning His Research Against Supermicro
For any Fortune 500 (Google, Apple, HP, etc.), have certain staff work covertly under shell subsidiaries but develop close rapport with key vendors (as said subsidiary), make straw purchases and do comprehensive (bordering on intrusive) supply-chain surveillance and auditing, because the targets on the side of the parent corp's "boat" paints them as easy marks for industrial/economic espionage/sabotage/monitoring. Not only does this help confuse/disinform competitors, but it can make attacks by state and other actors more difficult.

This might mean high-resolution X-raying of all hardware and cryptographic signature verification of all firmware in order to prove hardware received is what was designed, and nothing else.

anon49124··on This Island Nation Has the Most Powerful Passport in the World
I wouldn't want a Japanese passport for a variety of reasons but Singaporean, German and French good-to-go IMHO. A friend of mine wants to move from Zurich to Singapore and another friend has a Singaporean/American dual-citizen son.
anon49124··on How to Get Things Done When You Don't Feel Like It
I also took terazosin for a couple of weeks due to insane sweating (secondary hyperhydrosis; cold sweating) and goosebumps response (shiver) when not cold.

Overall, the effects of atomoxetine (80 mg/day) are slight (IME) but helpful: reducing by an order or two the magnitude of tracks my mind wants to wander in.

CBD (10 mg 4x/day) has been the biggest help.

Also, I take heavy doses (~200 mg/day ER in the morning) of propranolol.

Mirtazapine (60 mg/day at night)

Clonidine (0.1 mg/day at night)

I would avoid SSRI's at all costs (Maslow's hierarchy of need habits optimization: exercise, sleep, diet, caffeine (which is a mild anticholinergic) elimination, CBT, regular socializing, etc.) because the vestibular and discontinuation side-effects are horrendous and possibly permanently-damaging.
