You probably answered this elsewhere, but I can't find it. What has kept you from using a CSS framework?
I miss how in OS X, I can at least open up a terminal and go to shop. cd / mkdir / tmux / vim
I'm disappointed by the call homes.
The lack of a package manager. Chocolate GUI is kind of a joke. Even Synaptic could queue multiple packages back in 2000.
MSFT promised an SSH client. It's nowhere to be found.
Overall, I'd rather fork over the cash and get a POSIX-like environment with OS X. If not, Fedora and Ubuntu are so featureful.
- Old Slashdot
- Old style Thinkpads
- 4chan before it had captcha
- Kazaa (do these networks still work?)
- Suprnova (warez has gone downhill, since we now have open source alternatives)
- Turntable.fm
- Runescape Classic
- Old Firefox (when it was light, phoenix 0.1
- Utorrent (before they wrecked it with adware)
- Windows 2000 classic interface, XP
- Nokia N900 (debian phone, nokia abandoned linux and maemo for microsoft.)
- Razr 3 / Old nokia "Dumbphones" - built like tanks. Solid. Reliable.
- I miss the old innocence of PHP Vbulletin, early CMS systems like PHP-Nuke - which at the time were cool.
- Photoshop 6 (before they put CRM callhomes everywhere)
- BZFlag - no one cares about this anymore :(
- MySpace - I liked how you could customize it. It was more individualistic
- AOL / MSN / Yahoo Chat. People were more open to making friendships online.
Hacker culture may not necessarily be aligned with Eich's personal views / situations. But crucial underlying concept is ignoring nebulous things like that. So taking action / reforms based off the premise feels like a Chesteron's fence [1].
[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Chesterton%27s_fence
Recent versions of Firefox have introduced third party plugins (like pocket).
After the Eich thing, they lost the "hacker" cred and their talent was pretty easy much poached. Further, the concept of merit - overlooking the political in lieu of skill / talent - is no longer a core value of the organization. [1]
Recruiters were all over linkedin and taking away the best talent left and right.
They're kind of shifting more from technology into politics. I heard they were cutting employees and divisions a lot.
I know former employees have to sign a waiver not to talk about their layoff, but why hasn't Mozilla's layoffs gotten any press, but startups do?
http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Mozilla-Reviews-E19129.htm gives a clue.
So this bandcamp site, is it like an indie itunes? I notice you can sample the whole song without paying. I use soundcloud is good for free music.
I'm kind of thinking it'd be nice to have a monthly what are you listening to while working thread.
In other comments: If you listen to music can you list some on youtube we can grab?
By the way, if you're music mac, bsd or linux, you can use Youtube-dl to download youtube / video site music:
pip install youtube-dl
youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 <url>First I wanted to say USA may be different from others in the fact that silence can't be hold against you. If police detain you, the advice I hear from lawyers is to zip it. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGgKLgVNfAo is a great presentation featuring a former detective and a defense attorney)
In other countries, like UK - not giving an alibi in situ can be used against you.
In USA - I trust the integrity of the legal system, but the police are trained to use deception - ranging from gigantic pretexts, like posing as your telephone repair man, to simple bluffs and lies. (Funny spoof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfF8OSlGhKk)
This creates a chilling effect of distrust which discourages informants. No one worth his salt can take a cop at his or her word. And I think the cumulative result that has on communities is drowned in relation to what we see with cop violence in the public eye.
Not having a line between community and police means cases can go unsolved and serious crime can go unpunished.
I disagree. I hear too much talk about solving gaps and creating jobs, and not single shred of sympathy for the simple rich.
We need to stop thinking its our problems to solve these so-called "societal injustices". It's not my problem. I'm trying to improve myself!
People should mind their own business and try to improve their own situations. If they're in no / shitty jobs, poor health / broken families, they need to figure it out like everyone else! We can't play God and it for them.
It just enable this entitlement attitude of your piousness and their own of what they deserve.
When people are jerks and rip me off - no one makes me a news article. And that's the problem, in the eyes of the law - you're not this VIP.
I understand her frustration in getting turned around. The rules are the rules. You wasted money on a ticket by hoping you could work on a tourist visa. No, you don't get "let off" or special treatment. Always double check to make sure you are using the correct visa!
Anyone who wants to see customs in action, I recommend the reality TV show "Border Security", they are in UK, Canada and Australia: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=border+security.
If you haven't noticed, being a talkshow pundit it kind of a fad. Kind of like The Young Turks, David Pakman, etc.
If you like politics and being a critic so much, I think the author should keep it on a separate blog.
I think he's probably a good person, but him putting divisive politics into the mix really distracted me.
The people causing the social outrage debacles, often can't program. They're complete outsiders who think they can use social ideas and useful idiots as a vehicle for their own benefit.
Many QAers and PM's can or have programmed some, at one point, or else they wouldn't understand the domain of the problem.
Most of the trouble crowd tend to be social marketers and so-called "evangelists" on twitter.
They're not programmers.
These people leading the vanguard of your code of conduct movements - they're not even really tech. They're happy when you invent these new job positions to give them a paycheck.
De-escalated depending on the context of the situation.
Code of Conduct defines problems and could turn anything funny, innocent, etc. into an excuse to ruin someone's life.
9/10 times it's someone who doesn't program (an Adria Richards, Shanley Kane) who will be attacking someone who actually contributes.
What about my feelings? No one's going to care because I'm white and conservative.
You have it backwards. A paradox of choice for females.
Men aren't picking, they're the one's pasting messages desperately to get responses. It's a hopeless situation.
Ever been to a night club? Male:Female ratio? You have any idea how much worse it is on a dating website?
It's interesting how you say I projected, I'm interested in the tendency of men to fib about their success with females.
Yes, I've seen hundreds of comments like yours, then I saw their accounts get banned out of frustration the next day.
Even if you did have success on a dating website (I have, and have had friends who married), by no means are they in favor of men.
If you need me to elaborate on the data, I can.
For anyone interested in a good read on the subject, check out End of Discussion: How the Left's Outrage Industry Shuts Down Debate, Manipulates Voters, and Makes America Less Free (and Fun) by Mary Ham and Guy Benson.
It's an excellent read, and shouldn't be too much of a sting to the social outrage panderers out there.
This is so backwards.
Women use tinder to get attention, not relationships. Rarely sex.
Men are the one's in the race to the bottom. They get ignored by all of them. The women use it to treat men like ants.
Yet these studies and willing betas still treat women like the victims.
As men, the larger issue is this cuckold-psychology where you have to sound charitable to females, even if it takes flat out denial of situations. Women still hold the power.
How is that a bad thing? I think that's a zero sum game way of looking at it.
No damage is done if someone makes a closed source version. They can add value and stimulate competition. More often, they fail.
Occasionally, core developers may enrich and provide additional functionality upon a permissive core. Why not look at Postgres as an example?
And what harm is done? Lost code contributions? Some have no interest in collaborating on software they can't incorporate / copy from later without restriction. It takes time to wrap ones brain around a codebase.
Why would someone take time to understand the internals of a GPLv3 app, when they could never incorporate pieces of it in their code later on?
> it's ideal for applications like this.
Ideal is subjective. Judging by the above, it seems as if enforcing envy trumps programmers doing as they wish with the code.
Why GPLv3? Why not make the license permissive as possible?
I don't think twitter's discourse ever helped anyone, any group, or any society.
Can someone brighten my day and tell me a way twitter has helped us, somehow?
These guys don't quite know what they're talking about. Or there smart and playing the sheep like a fiddle.
My fear is that these guys are laughing their way to the bank suckering people into this stuff.
Is this like a giant parody of the gullible shepherding of American consumers?
This is pablum. You can cook. You can make your own, custom meals that fit your macros. That are fresh and give you variety.
Take a view at the attitude of the current admins:
> Well, now she's gone (you did it reddit!), and /u/spez has the moral authority as a co-founder to move ahead with the purge. We tried to let you govern yourselves and you failed, so now The Man is going to set some Rules. Admittedly, I can't say I'm terribly upset.

How would you feel if Microsoft Word started criticizing people based on the content they written? This is a thing?
Reddit was just a tool. The admins need to step out of the way. I don't care if there are "creepy" reddits.
The entitled and pompous attitude of admins is so elitist it's sick. You're a forum. You're not gods. You're not priests.
If they're engaging in such activity, their financial predicament probably isn't too good to begin with.
Why onboard women? Why give them silver spoons? Why is this a thing?
