anon-sre-srm··on Signal v7.0.0 with phone number privacy
Wrong forum for this question. I wanted universal chat, file transfer, and clipboard sharing across the big 3 desktop and big 2 mobile OSes without being tied to a universal, privacy-invading, primary key like a phone number. Using phone numbers for signup is only a couple degrees from using social security numbers for customer accounts in the 90's. Captchas and account expiry are some of the proper forms of abuse prevention that don't leap straight to privacy invasion with a not truly portable or anonymous unique identifier.
anon-sre-srm··on Signal v7.0.0 with phone number privacy
Or use a fork like Session, despite its (unsustainable?) crypto business model. Reliance on phone numbers creating trackable metadata was a critical and avoidable footgun resulting from copying WhatsApp too closely without leaning into privacy first.
anon-sre-srm··on Stuffit – 30 Years of File Compression
Oh the joys of .sit.hqx.

Mac classic resource forks, while most user friendly, were maximally power user opaque. OS X resource forks implemented as files create underlying file system messiness on non macs across network file systems but at least solved the migration and backup problem in a UNIX-like way. A slight tradeoff that's a win for interoperability.

Windows NTFS ADS, allowing any file to contain any number of other files hidden to the user was a terrible idea that never should've happened. It still works in Windows 11 and it's a giant security vulnerability that marches on because of the tyranny of "compatibility".

File metadata should be possible but it should be limited to essential OS housekeeping activities but definitely not by applications.

Faithful backup, restoration, migration, and archival needs keen attention to the preservation of platform-specific filesystem metadata and maintaining the faithful integrity of such.

anon-sre-srm··on Wealth inequality is root cause of all current economic woes. Interview. [video]
Infographics: Wealth Inequality in America (2018)

https://youtu.be/EZRFVjU2IWs

America is similar to Brazil and Mexico, but it's a third-world country politically with mostly soft, misguided, uneducated voters who don't realize how badly they're mistreated unable or unwilling to take effective corrective actions to address the root causes. Jan 9 riots, conspiracy theories, political complaints about one party or another, bikeshedding, and flashpoint issues absorb and express this discontent ineffectively. Unfortunately, economic inequality cannot be reformed from within (see also: John McCain) when the political operating system is absurdly polluted and usurped by billionaires intent on maintaining the status quo feudal lobbying system that anoints celebrities to high office with media buys in exchange for access and influence. Nonviolent, massive, sustained pressure is the only way to force out the corrupt, bribed officials and attain revolutionary campaign finance reform.

anon-sre-srm··on Inner Platform Effect
Don't worry, random important technical history will be randomly deleted by unemployed guitarist/wikipedia editor. Ask someone under 30 what an encyclopedia is or how an academic journal works, and you'll get a blank stare.

Javascript may have eaten the world, but Wikipedia ate the world's history and depth of knowledge.

anon-sre-srm··on Inner Platform Effect
When suitable alternatives exist, duplication with complexity is a subconscious tendency to ensure job security. It happens everywhere. If we were to completely deduplicate technology and effort by ruthlessly promoting standardization, there would be only one instruction set architecture, one compiler, one operating system, and many fewer programming languages. The paradox of choice, especially unlimited choice, is tyranny of a different kind than monoculture. Also, there must be review of the work of so-called "architects" so they do not form a hated cadre of useless idea guys.
anon-sre-srm··on "Stolen" radio tower missing for at least a year
This looks like fraud to get money from people through deception for a tiny radio station that can't sustain itself.
anon-sre-srm··on Flowers grown floating on polluted waterways can help clean up nutrient runoff
"Help" like planting a few trees ostensibly to "solve" climate change. And show me the evidence this is better than regulating and eliminating pollution at its sources.
anon-sre-srm··on How did the settlers of the Canary Islands survive a millennium of isolation?
Damn, that's 10x the output of magical realism. While life finds a way, humans frequently invent new ways to race ourselves into local and global extinction like it's some sort of game of chicken.

anon-sre-srm··on How did the settlers of the Canary Islands survive a millennium of isolation?
More precisely, many things are roughly modelable as differential equations where aggregate rate of change depends on an amount present.
anon-sre-srm··on How did the settlers of the Canary Islands survive a millennium of isolation?
While technically and economically true, global fertility rates except in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia are cratering. Income, community cohesiveness, and leisure time of the non-ultrarich need to substantially improve to encourage larger families.
anon-sre-srm··on Training LLMs to generate text with citations via fine-grained rewards
I'm concerned innovations in LLMs will silently replace human expertise in unverifiable and bitrot ways ultimately leading to widespread decline in mastery in many fields and possibly the loss of ability to teach, mentor, or maintain incomes of actual subject matter experts gradually to a point where no human SMEs can be found for critical technology or research necessary for organized civilization. Brave New World-Idiocracy with such incapable people in it. I'm betting climate change will also get us with hypercanes and famine affecting billions roughly at the same time.
anon-sre-srm··on Universal Basic Income Has Been Tried over and over Again. It Works Every Time
Go apply to McDonald's now then because I don't believe anyone sane would work a shit job they didn't have to simply for a trinket.
anon-sre-srm··on Universal Basic Income Has Been Tried over and over Again. It Works Every Time
You're arguing for a no experimentation Catch-22.
anon-sre-srm··on Universal Basic Income Has Been Tried over and over Again. It Works Every Time
It's already the former. Have a look at all of the homeless Americans and sleeping in cars borderline working poor in shit gig economy jobs working for crumbs. It's a result of decades of political corruption and apathy following widespread, cult belief in "effortless" meritocracy and trickledown Reaganomics.
anon-sre-srm··on Freenginx: Core Nginx developer announces fork
Yes. It's no different from any optional feature. Actual beta features should only be shipped in beta software .
anon-sre-srm··on Freenginx: Core Nginx developer announces fork
Incorrect. Features available to users still require a minimum, standard level of support. This is like the deceptive misnomer of staging and test environments provided to internal users used no differently than production in all but name.

anon-sre-srm··on 165 m private submersible superyacht
Yep. It's a giant machine with specialized logistics (supplies and parts) and staff needs, so it has to based somewhere. AI can't miracle away maintenance of such a complex beast, if it were ever built. There's no hiding it under a net in the Bahamas.
