anon-sre-srm··on What Luddites can teach us about resisting an automated future
Nonviolence is the first step because the Unabomber route doesn't work, no matter how insightful about the long-term shift reducing demand for human labor and falling wages captured by an ever-shrinking few capital owners who will ultimately become trillionaires while millions/billions of people live in favelas or become homeless.
anon-sre-srm··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
I think we should severely tax air travel because of the climate change contribution and of the tourist temporary hipster gentrification causing permanent damage.
anon-sre-srm··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
My elderly disabled mom on a fixed income is being billed for an ambulance ride from a hospital to a long-term care facility because Medicare deemed it "unnecessary" even though the shuttle couldn't take her.
anon-sre-srm··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
A long time ago, I was once charged for being browbeaten into entering a social security number on a keypad by a belligerent ER security guard at a hospital. Didn't even see anyone, but still charged.
anon-sre-srm··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
That's the problem. The doctors should form employee owned co-ops and be sure profiteering administrators and suits aren't the ones running things.
anon-sre-srm··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
But the Koch's want people to believe libertarianism is a kinder version of hate that believes in weed and unlimited freedom to rake in cash.

SF Bay Area south bay -> Good Samaritan (anything but Valley Med)

SF Bay Area peninsula -> Stanford

Austin -> St David's

anon-sre-srm··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
No, the worst part is dying of a painful terminal illness while being sued into bankruptcy in your dying days having to fight to keep minimal possessions because the hospitals and doctors want money.
anon-sre-srm··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
Change doctors. Don't reward abuse or failure.
anon-sre-srm··on Boeing 777 loses tire while taking off from SF, crushing cars on the ground
Fuel dump or burn it off by circling. Going elsewhere would be inconvenient to passengers unless they had a replacement plane and/or crew in LAX which was likely. Unless you're Delta flight 89 and then you dump fuel over populated areas at low altitude.
anon-sre-srm··on Boeing 777 loses tire while taking off from SF, crushing cars on the ground
Accrual of under-examined metal fatigue likely occurred. This points to serious deficiencies in inspection.
anon-sre-srm··on Wheel Falls Off United Boeing 777
Watch the Al Jazeera 737 NG whistleblower documentary. It's little known and shocking.
anon-sre-srm··on NTSB: Boeing not cooperating on investigation into Alaska midair blowout
It's unlikely they have records because they don't need anymore bad press after John Oliver barbecued them into carbon and pressed them into a diamond. They are on the back foot and now have little choice to cooperate as the path of least resistance while attempting refocus on their roots pre MD merger, camel memes notwithstanding.
anon-sre-srm··on "Rabbit Test" Unwins the Hugo
Freedom only exists is when it is periodically exercised and consistently defended without compliance or compromise.
anon-sre-srm··on Science fiction authors were excluded from awards for fear of offending China
Get your Fahrenheit 451 flamethrowers warmed up.
anon-sre-srm··on Science fiction authors were excluded from awards for fear of offending China
And leadership to pick somewhere reasonable rather than submit to the tyranny of the mob or stuffed ballot boxes.
anon-sre-srm··on Science fiction authors were excluded from awards for fear of offending China
Greed and feeble cowardice enable it while denying creativity and freedom.
anon-sre-srm··on Welding of Plutonium (1958) [pdf]
Unfortunately, no. It requires something with a little more kick.
anon-sre-srm··on Releasing my tools under the MIT License was probably a mistake (2023)
Either give code away or don't. Don't demand contributions or be a control freak about their use because it's wasted energy and uncool.
anon-sre-srm··on Scandinavia's first farmers slaughtered hunter-gatherer population, DNA suggests
Igitur quī dēsīderat pācem, præparet bellum.

Pacifism can only endure as a privileged lifestyle on the backs of warriors. Defenseless, clueless folk get wiped out, enslaved, or subjugated by the first "Viking raid".

anon-sre-srm··on Altman's Ambition
Ouch. Yep. It's one removed from the braindump technical wiki pages completely lacking in structure and organization.
anon-sre-srm··on Altman's Ambition
I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like Mark Zuckerberg is doing something similar spending 10's of billions lacking a coherent vision or immediate demand for a specific use. At least Sama has a strategy for maybe big things that could change the world(tm). My concern is spending 10's of billions or trillions without a specific, profitable need is inherently risking large piles of cash that would be more ethically given away rather than wasted.
anon-sre-srm··on Old Online Chevy Manuals
1924 Chevy manual says "Always use the best oil as it is more economical in the long run." The hand waving ambiguity alluding to expensive rather than most suitable product specifications. It's good to hear that consumer propaganda wasn't a recent invention.

By the way, here's some service-writer lingo: eyewash n. - Customer impressive procedures or checks that either not performed or are a required step in the course of a job used to make it seem more valuable.

anon-sre-srm··on Russia attempting to develop nuclear space weapon to destroy satellites with EMP
ASAT that doesn't involve strong mechanical capture like a net and deorbiting is a bad idea™ from the outset. That's not really feasible and there are very, very few legitimate needs to shoot down any satellite. Plus, the prospect of an arms race or open conflict in the final frontier doesn't help global security or anything else except murderous, megalomaniacal autocrats intent on say destroying a GNSS that would only have the effect of escalating painful reprisals.
anon-sre-srm··on Russia attempting to develop nuclear space weapon to destroy satellites with EMP
Russia's military technology playbook is to exaggerate and disinform claims about capabilities. I'm left wondering if this just DC Russophobia hype being parroted by mainstream media lacking credible intelligence that problematic military space weaponry will be deployed. Congrats CNN, you're doing the work of the Kremlin for them.
anon-sre-srm··on Millions of donkeys killed each year to make a traditional remedy
JELL-O and most pill capsules are made from animal products too.

The BBC failed to inform because I'm still confused if collagen extraction relies on recycling dead animal carcasses rather than actively raising and killing animals for slaughter.

anon-sre-srm··on Millions of donkeys killed each year to make a traditional remedy
Meat agriculture is killing us in multiple ways.

- Pandemics including the 1918 "Spanish" flu and COVID

- Antibiotic resistance

- Air, soil, and water pollution

- Deforestation for feed farms and CAFOs

- A major component of climate change

Most people are inhumane and completely reject animal cruelty reflexively, so it's a weak, unpersuasive argument. Meat agriculture and fossil fuels need to be banned but won't because of stupidity, profits, and a lack of willpower.

anon-sre-srm··on Show HN: macOS-cross-compiler – Compile binaries for macOS on Linux
It's cooler to use liquid nitrogen.

anon-sre-srm··on TrueType Fonts for OpenTTD
[Insert an ode to the monochrome bitmapped raster font constants in C and Pascal, both fixed width and proportionally spaced varieties.]
anon-sre-srm··on Inner Platform Effect
Wikipedia is a lie and a tragedy of the commons pile of poo run by an elite mob of dilettante knownothings who lack the perspective or authority to judge the content they deem relevant or not presumptively and arbitrarily without any fair or formal process, inquiry, or research.
