ano-ther··on Ask HN: Is it wrong to use my personal laptop for work?
> In my contract, I’m not obligated to use the company laptop

It’s also not in my contract, but in the IT policy I need to acknowledge once a year.

> I believe these software tools are just to comply with some ISO standards.

“Some ISO standards” may be cumbersome or even pointless — but they help your company sell their products. Ignoring them is not a good idea.

Besides: if you use your private laptop, it may be subject to a legal hold in case of a lawsuit, giving someone else access to it.

ano-ther··on arXiv is a free journal publisher masquerading as pre-print server
That is a link to their editorial board.

Seems logical that they want to ensure the quality and therefore go through some steps, including moderation and author vetting. Not sure why this would be “masquerading”.

They spell out their guidelines including moderation here: https://info.arxiv.org/help/submit/index.html

ano-ther··on Do bike lanes cause more traffic congestion? What the research says
> Cycles have right of way, which prevents cars from exiting the roundabout smoothly. At rush hour, this very quickly generates massive queues

Isn’t that more a result of the roundabout being overloaded? That particular one can be quite full even in non-bike weather.

ano-ther··on Please do not write below the line
From their main page, it looks like all of the letters with this line have something below it which is redacted.

Could it be that they print the letter (perhaps sign in person as it is a legal document) and then scan/OCR it prior to sending? The redacted thing would then be an identifier for the recipient to be automatically filed.

The email convo is from 2006 and this could be a realistic tech setup for this kind of organisation.

ano-ther··on Employees Describe an Environment of Paranoia and Fear Inside Automattic
> Blind requires employees to use their official workplace emails to sign up, as a way to authenticate that users actually work for the companies they are discussing.

That’s a pretty bad design decision. It’s also not a good idea to access such forum from you work computer, even when not using the company email.

ano-ther··on NYT Misleads on Plagierism Scandal
The title of the post is “The Kamala Harris Plagiarism Scandal”, not “NYT misleads”

> With this new information, while I believe the case is more serious than I commented to the New York Times, the overarching points remain. While there are problems with this work, the pattern points to sloppy writing habits, not a malicious intent to defraud.

> Is it problematic? Yes. But it’s also not the wholesale fraud that many have claimed it to be. It sits somewhere between what the two sides want it to be.

And “Eighteen of the allegations focus on the book, and another 11 focus on alleged self-plagiarisms that came later”.

Self-plagiarism is a very strange accusation. As the post points out, people with a message repeat themselves a lot. Otherwise they don’t get the message across.

ano-ther··on Tax on Europe's frequent flyers could raise €64B a year – study
I like fresh ideas to reduce flights. This seems onerous to implement.

You need a central EU database on who is flying where and in which class.

In their paper they mention that the carrier needs your tax status to calculate the full fare. This will enable all kinds of shenanigans for quoting you a different price because they can estimate how price-sensitive you are.

It would be fun for HR departments. By the time I make my first non-business flight, half a year is already over and this a couple flights for the job. Who pays the tax for that?

ano-ther··on Things I learned while building a yt-dlp wrapper
I can’t speak on the interpretation of the LGPL, but there are several copies of ffmpeg on my computer because people interpret it as in the article and install a new copy for their application.

Interesting that the MacOS protections can be subverted by not setting an attribute.

ano-ther··on Internet Archive: Security breach alert
> the Have I Been Pwned data breach notification service created by Troy Hunt, with whom threat actors commonly share stolen data to be added to the service

Do they? Why?

ano-ther··on The Static Site Paradox
The marketers care quite a lot about the readers. After all, their goal is to reach them with glorious content so they do something.

This leads them to aim for “reasonably performant for the users” as part of optimizing the package of reader + marketer experience.

In that view, IT requirements such as security rank between “should be standard” to “don’t really care” (at least until the first compromise).

ano-ther··on Ableton Move
Cool. Seems like a hardware version of their iOS Ableton Note app. Must. Resist. Urge. To. Acquire. New. Gear.
ano-ther··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter?
Sure, if you solder an antenna to your memory first :-)

But good and thorough write-up about how to actually exploit such a glitch.

And you could also use the cigarette lighter for hanging out at the data center back door and wait until the admin comes for a smoke.

ano-ther··on Mobile Twitter on the Blackberry (2008) how times have changed
Can’t remember if Twitter was part of that, but I really liked the unified messenger on Blackberry, which pulled email accounts, SMS, WhatsApp and others into one message feed and single interface.
ano-ther··on Fastest-Growing German Startups
Is there some way to see the absolute revenue (or even profits)? The growth rates alone aren’t that meaningful.
ano-ther··on Mozillas PPA ads tech: basically DRM but for ads
It’s quite sad. Firefox used to be the browser where I could just put AdBlock Origin on and would be good to go without too much tracking.

Now, I have to dive into deceptively named privacy settings just like with the other large browsers.

ano-ther··on Seeing Faces in Things: A model and dataset for pareidolia
A friend in primary school used that to create comic faces: doodle randomly, find a face in the tangle and perfect it. Usually they were profiles with large noses and other exaggerations. Quite entertaining.
ano-ther··on State Education Department Seeks Bids for 55,000 Classroom Bibles
Good idea in principle. The texts are all royalty free.

The RFP defines value as (1) mandatory requirements and (2) lead time for delivery, which they later specify should be 2 weeks. That’s a steep schedule for such a production from scratch.

ano-ther··on Ask HN: Is it acceptable to refuse to answer a question in a tech interview?
I don’t hire for technical roles, but I always ask a “how would you solve this” question. This gives me an idea about their reasoning and if they have a good grasp of similar situations. It’s not a free consulting session.

Of course, if they ask you about how you implemented the patent protected confabulator at your current role, then there’s a reason to politely decline (and they hopefully wouldn’t hire someone who spills business secrets in an interview).

ano-ther··on Exploiting DRAM bitflips to get a root shell
Impressive! And a music track like that should be standard for all progress bars.
ano-ther··on Founder of vacasa dunking on pacaso, doesn't get much worse than that
The spat seems irrelevant for me, but I need to try this trick for my next presentation:

> As with most investor decks, the charts are all up and to the right, but they are showing cumulative data, not year by year […] makes it look like 16% YOY growth [of profit, instead of] 66% decline.

ano-ther··on Stop Asking People 'What Do You Do?'
It’s an invitation to talk about yourself. Since it’s so common, why not have an answer (or several, depending on the situation) that keeps the conversation going?

Helped me when I felt less confident about my place in the world. Berating people for smalltalk isn’t going to work.

ano-ther··on uBlock Origin Lite version updates missing in Firefox add-ons store
What a mess. Why does it seem so difficult to organize review processes that are competent?

Great that they managed to find a way to bypass it.

(I can imagine that the complaint about data collection comes from the file referencing “googladservices” a lot - but that’s to filter it of course).

ano-ther··on Made a Banana Bread Calculator for Perfect Loaves Every Time
Nice! Will give it a try on the weekend.

Would highlight “calculate” instead of the “close” button.

ano-ther··on The Prodigal Techbro (2020)
> But instead of chastising and punishing his prodigal son, the rejoicing father greets him joyfully and heads off the apology with a huge party. It’s a great metaphor for how to run a religion, but a lousy way to run everything else.

Not necessarily. Religions are in a way similar to political activism — people with shared values trying to make the world better by aligning it with these values. They emphasize converting non-believers because that’s how they can grow and demonstrate that they provide a credible alternative to existing wisdom.

ano-ther··on The Palindromic Hat-Trick
Quite miraculous.

Underlying paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.06208v2

Unfortunately, the algorithm seems to be a bit too complex to turn this into a party trick.

ano-ther··on Novel nasal spray effectively prevents influenza infection
> if validated in humans.

Seems like important progress though.

ano-ther··on McSweeney's letter on childhood photos and phone storage
I still don’t understand why iCloud cannot have a switch to keep the pictures even when I delete them on my phone (where storage is more sparse).

OneDrive with an MS-Office subscription actually solves this. Syncs in the background and I can access the pictures on my laptop without downloading them from iCloud.

ano-ther··on Alan Turing’s 1950 manual for the Mark I electronic computer [pdf]
Yes, encryption:

ano-ther··on Bitcoin puzzle #130 solved: 13 BTC ($800k) won; 949 BTC ($60M) left to be won
Was this one stolen as well? Or did they find a way to transfer the funds safely this time?
ano-ther··on Making a rickroll laser: A parametric speaker
Yes. And then you have the vexing problem of the stage sound where you want the musicians to hear themselves and each other. Without feeding back into their microphones, and not too loud please.

Modern in-ear monitoring has solved some of this, but it’s still tricky (and expensive).
