ano-ther··on Turmoil in DOGE spills into public view as Musk's group confronts a PR crisis
> “PR is viewed as a big mess internally right now,”

When you have bad media because of your actions, polishing the communication is only possible after an earnest effort to do better.

Which is going to be difficult without the knowledge of the digital teams they fired (and which can show results and savings as per the article).

The quote at the end sums it up nicely:

> “Anyone can make something look nice,” the employee said. But following the correct protocols to ensure government systems don’t break “is a lot more complicated. And I don’t think they care about it at all.”

ano-ther··on Anti-Schelling points and waiting for my barista-made coffee
> I'm not sure everyone in a country "knowing" to drive on the same side of the road is an example of a Schelling point -- drivers are trained to do this.

The driving side is usually also the walking side. When I travel to a country with another orientation, I bump into people on the sidewalk or corridors a few times before adjusting. Same on the way back, all without driving a car myself.

ano-ther··on Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions
I‘d be interested in an economic comparison. How much does it actually save to replace physical controls with a touchscreen?
ano-ther··on NotaGen: Advancing Musicality in Symbolic Music Gen with LLM Training Paradigms
I like that this produces notes instead of complete sound files. Makes it possible to use and manipulate in a DAW (and then employ proper instruments rather than generic MIDI).
ano-ther··on The End of Weather Forecasting
And even the companies who are supposed to provide this “cheaper and more accurate“ vehemently object to it:

ano-ther··on Ask HN: Better to have separate names for the company and SaaS, or one for both?
One. Building a brand is hard enough and at least in the beginning you don’t want to get distracted (and confuse others) by ”we are from $company, you know the ones making $productWithATotallyDifferentName“.

Later you can then rename your holding to Alphabet or Meta.

ano-ther··on Trump's EV Rollback Could Cost Taxpayers $1B
Omitting that would still leave the additional cost at $800M.
ano-ther··on Microsoft's OneDrive is throttling speeds, as per multiple reports
And as usual, answers.microsoft.com gives a very long non-answer, including gems such as:

> Most internet plans are asymmetrical, meaning they offer a higher download speed and lower upload speed. This is because typical internet usage involves more downloading then uploading.

ano-ther··on SEC Declares Memecoins Are Not Subject to Oversight
They treat them as collectibles with ”limited or no use.“ That makes sense, but isn’t quite supporting the crypto-world’s preferred narrative.

> Although individual meme coins may have unique features, meme coins typically share certain characteristics. Meme coins typically are purchased for entertainment, social interaction, and cultural purposes, and their value is driven primarily by market demand and speculation. In this regard, meme coins are akin to collectibles. Meme coins also typically have limited or no use or functionality.

ano-ther··on Upside Down Air Force
The ground lining the hole would also reflect or absorb electromagnetic waves differently than air.
ano-ther··on RoboPianist: Dexterous Piano Playing with Deep Reinforcement Learning (2023)
Probably this:

> Every single key on a grand piano keyboard is weighted differently. This is because the strings for each note are slightly thinner and shorter in the treble register, becoming thicker and longer towards the bass register. As a result, there is greater resistance when playing low notes than when playing high notes. In other words, a heavier touch is required in the left hand and a lighter touch in the right hand. To emulate this in a digital piano, the keys are often individually weighted, with the lower keys heavier than the higher ones — something that’s called graded weighting.

ano-ther··on MH370: Malaysia is resuming the search for missing 777 airliner, 11 years later
The same firm did that in 2018 in a different area but with a similar contract.

> On 17 October 2017, Malaysia received proposals from three companies (including the Dutch company Fugro and the U.S. salvage company Ocean Infinity) offering to continue the search for the aircraft.[237] Later that month, the Malaysian government released a statement that it was in discussion with Ocean Infinity to make a further underwater search in the area to the north of the 2016 search, on the basis of no fee if the wreckage was not found.[238] The search started on 22 January and ended in June 2018 without finding the aircraft.

ano-ther··on The Deep Research problem
Similar to what Derek Lowe found with a pharma example: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/evaluation-deep-re...

> As with all LLM output, all of these things are presented in the same fluid, confident-sounding style: you have to know the material already to realize when your foot has gone through what was earlier solid flooring.

ano-ther··on How do you approach appealing to formal seniority in a technical discussion?
One way is to lead the discussion by asking questions and facilitating. You may learn something from others, they see you as thoughtful (and senior), and when necessary you can steer the conversation.

ano-ther··on US could cut Ukraine's access to Starlink services over minerals, say sources
yes -- corrected -- thanks
ano-ther··on US could cut Ukraine's access to Starlink services over minerals, say sources
The USA and Europe are on par when it comes to military aid to Ukraine, both with around 62bn EUR. The US spent 45bn EUR on other aid, while Europe spent 70bn.

See the charts on page 4 and 5 here: https://www.ifw-kiel.de/fileadmin/Dateiverwaltung/Subject_Do...

Demanding 500bn in return seems quite a bit. https://www.politico.eu/article/trump-demands-500b-in-rare-e...

ano-ther··on Basketball has evolved into a game of calculated decision-making
I wouldn't be that pessimistic. Just like Stephen Curry discovered the value of the three-point shot, someone will come along and spot an opportunity by going against the grain of today's paradigm. Perhaps an AlphaGo for basketball will help to find it.
ano-ther··on Ask HN: The Worst Engineer I Know Is Demanding We Start Using Celery (Python)
Sorry, I cannot add much on Celery.

If "every time one of his ideas is implemented it turns into a flaming bag of complexity dog shit, and everyone else is left holding the bag to clean up," then it might be better to discuss how you make and stick to decisions in the team, rather than following your fellow engineer down his fad-of-the-day.

ano-ther··on DOGE as a National Cyberattack
The Obama initiative did not override security protocols though (what the article describes). It was basically installing modern IT management for the government.
ano-ther··on Python 3.14 Getting New Interpreter
> The baseline is Python 3.14 built with Clang 19 without this new interpreter.
ano-ther··on Is it possible to become a one-person unicorn?
This means that you will be dealing with 20M humans and 400k paying ones. They come with a lot of requests, questions and demands. From many jurisdictions. Not to forget tax laws.

At some point you will find it easier and cheaper to integrate rather than buy every service. And maybe even more fun to work with a great team.

ano-ther··on Why are TRUMP NFTs selling for million dollars?
They are being offered at that price (999ETH), not necessarily sold. The creator has not sold a single item yet:

ano-ther··on AI research team claims to reproduce DeepSeek core technologies for $30

ano-ther··on Run deepseek r1 locally on your phone
Impressive.

It says that everything runs locally on my phone AND that I shouldn’t put private information in there because chats may be reviewed by their content moderation to improve the system.

Can you explain how that works?

Edit: and unfortunately it crashes on my iPhone SE already with the light model.

ano-ther··on Former tech CEO suing to get the record of his arrest removed from the internet
The EU has a "right to be forgotten", which is why you sometimes see a notice under the google results. This usually means someone asked them to clear certain search results.

ano-ther··on Acoustic Keystroke Leakage on Smart Televisions
That’s impressive. I can’t see though why anyone would type secret messages on their Smart TV that are worth stealing. Especially with that pick-a-character technique.
ano-ther··on HN: What are the effects of debt on your life?
I treat the mortgage as rent with the benefit that the asset value goes to me and not the landlord. So when I get the job+responsibilities blues I try to improve on those rather than the mortgage.
