ano-ther··on Dutch spy services have restricted intelligence-sharing with the United States
To be fair, Excel (on Windows) is far ahead of the competition, especially for power users like Finance.

For other office apps, the alternatives work, although I don’t know how, for example, LibreOffice fares with collaborative editing.

ano-ther··on AI Trading in Real Markets
Interesting. But the available portfolio is crypto coins only, which limits insights about the models‘ capabilities.
ano-ther··on US Passport Power Falls to Historic Low
It really depends what you desire. For some it's the savoir vivre, for others it may be the lack of an extradition treaty, or the taxes.
ano-ther··on Beliefs that are true for regular software but false when applied to AI
Maybe they used their AI to design Liquid Glass. Impressive at first sight, but unusable in practice.

ano-ther··on How Apple designs a virtual knob (2012)
The knob is clever and very well emulates a physical knob. That's not a good design for an on-screen one though.

- Going "around the rim" in an arc is difficult both for touch and mouse. Results in jerky motion.

- Defining the direction based on which outer rim I am closer to makes it unpredictable, especially for small knobs.

Best in my opinion is the "click / hold the knob and pull vertically or horizontally with up/right turning to the right. Makes it fast and predictable even with little space like a DAW audio mixer.

ano-ther··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
Some of it (like hiding the Safari tab button in a menu) feels like Windows-11-stupid.

Luckily, Apple is ok at supporting older phones, so I just have to be careful to not accidentally upgrade my SE to iOS 26.

Makes me nostalgic for Apple's interface guidelines, which were very well thought through, based on evidence, and with clear principles. https://vintageapple.org/inside_r/pdf/Human_Interface_Guidel...

ano-ther··on Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery
Isn’t there usually a methods section that covers it?
ano-ther··on Show HN: Pyscn – Python code quality analyzer for vibe coders
It has a JSON option, would that work?

ano-ther··on Record Everything
The moment you whip out a camera or recording device, you completely change the interaction. People become very self-aware and performative. And you morph from being part of a group to its observer.

Yes, our memories shape our identities, the same isn’t true for our memory sticks.

ano-ther··on I ran Claude in a loop for 3 months, and it created a genz programming language
Funny. Could be a new benchmark for LLM productivity. How long does it take an average engineer to create a joke language like that? I guess it’s below 3 months.

ano-ther··on Fourth, fifth, and sixth derivatives of position
Learnt something. As one of the linked articles says: "The higher derivatives of motion are rarely discussed in the teaching of classical mechanics of rigid bodies; nevertheless, we experience the effect not only of acceleration, but also of jerk and snap." [1]

Now I understand jerk as when you get pressed into your seat when starting a car. But how would I notice snap or even crackle?

ano-ther··on What services or apps did you see abroad and wonder: why don't we have them?
London and Stockholm: swipe your credit card for public transport. Great for visitors (I guess for residents a subscription will be cheaper)
ano-ther··on Germany at it again: now trying to reopen the "adblockers are illegal" debate
Adblock Plus which is the topic of this lawsuit is an ad-replacer rather than an ad-blocker -- and they make money from their own ads. I can see where that annoys publishers (and marvel that they manage to get any users).

From the article:

> While it offers ad blocking software, the company generates revenue from ads through its Acceptable Ads program – advertisers pay to have ads that are "respectful, nonintrusive and relevant" exempted from filtering. Non-commercial open source projects like uBlock Origin rely on community support.

> Deliver more effective ads to a unique and valuable audience of 400 million ad-filtering users.

ano-ther··on Why Whoop Stands Behind Blood Pressure Insights after FDA Warning
Here is the FDA's warning letter: https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-c...

Responding to an FDA warning letter (sent after previous interaction) with a marketing blog post takes some chuzpe. They even include "We stand by its accuracy, which the FDA has not questioned," as if FDA had assessed that for a device they haven't submitted for review.

ano-ther··on Nearly 3 out of 4 Oracle Java users say they've been audited in the past 3 years

ano-ther··on Next month, saved passwords will no longer be in Microsoft’s Authenticator app
It’s also annoying that MS requires a personal account for backing up the Authenticator data to iCloud to ”provide an additional layer of encryption“.

That description makes little sense, and at least they could honor my paid business subscription (and back it up to there if they don’t trust iCloud).

ano-ther··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
That’s a good argument.

I would still include more of the action, i.e., ”Get Amaya“ instead of ”Amaya“ as in the article.

ano-ther··on Why would you use .gitkeep?
It’s usually easier to encourage your collaborators to use a consistent structure by giving them pre-named empty folders.

Also helps with tools that get applied to certain files/folders.

ano-ther··on Why Voice Startups Should Ditch ElevenLabs Before It Ditches Them

ano-ther··on TI to invest $60B to manufacture foundational semiconductors in the U.S.

ano-ther··on Occurences of swearing in the Linux kernel source code over time
> bland hellscape of conformity

I see three reasons to use swearwords sparingly, even though they don’t particularly offend me.

1 Managing my own emotions. Most swearing is negative and that drags you down which is not very productive or fun.

2 Managing others‘ emotions as they burst out, which stresses the people around the swearer.

3 Some people just can’t say a fucking sentence without gratuitous swearing which makes them sound fucking stupid.

ano-ther··on The Professors Are Using ChatGPT, and Some Students Aren't Happy About It
Generating ”data sets for fictional chain stores, which students use in an exercise to understand various statistical concepts“ is actually a great use of AI.

Students using it to create “results“ faster underestimate the value of wrangling with a subject with their own brain to learn something about it.
