anianz··on The More Young People Use AI, the More They Hate It
"Children are never shy to tell the truth." Your comment makes me hopeful as well.

In general those "Generation XYZ is threatened by this, thinks that" tropes often annoy me. I'm born somewhere between Gen-Y and Gen-Z and those boundaries feel totally arbitrary.

> Freystaetter and Gottlieb both say that instead of their own generation, they are more worried about Gen Alpha and other young people that come after them, who lose their chance to develop healthy relationships with technologies when they become mandatory and ubiquitous.

I remember similar concerns from Millennials about Gen-Z with the Internet and social media. In the end the Internet and Social Media Gen-Z grew up with was quite different from the one Gen-Y was worried about and the reaction of the new generation to it of course not uniform. Similar developments might happen with Gen Alpha and AI, which seems even more polarizing to me.

anianz··on We replaced user accounts with Lightning payments for identity
Fair point. There are certainly cases where that is the better model.

HN and others als show that an account is not needed to recommend good content by using the voting system. But in my opinion the article frames personalized recommendation systems tied to an account, like on Netflix, too negative. I and persumably many others enjoy that it knows what I like and surfaces similar content.

Many of the big platforms and their behaviour might validate the point the article makes about an account being used to monitize users further. But me writing a comment here on Hacker News using an account and being able to access this and many other articles freely shows that better models are possible.

Access to information and discussion should not only be accessible to those who can pay for it piece by piece. The advertising based model has huge problems and might be at the end, but I hope other alternatives persist.
