angularly··on Ask HN: PHP vs. Node.js vs. Go for a new startup?
Learn Go! It will take some effort but it's worth it.

I am currently switching to Go from PHP. It's really not that hard to learn once you get your head around the static types and lack of OO - last thing is a big plus in my book. The way they handle it with structs and interfaces are so much better.

Biggest problem is there are limited ressources on the net about Go, and the documentation is lacking compared to PHP, examples are sparse. So be warned it will take you some time to learn.

But it's such a beautiful and simple language, that will be a breeze to support in the future for you and your team. Debugging and maintainability is top knotch.

And much faster than PHP. Node.js is also fast, but well it's not as maintainable, javascript is a pretty messy language. My thoughts on the matter is described well here:

For the frontend i recommend AngularJS

angularly··on Is The Economist left- or right-wing?
"We like free enterprise and tend to favour deregulation and privatisation. But we also like gay marriage, want to legalise drugs and disapprove of monarchy. So is the newspaper right-wing or left-wing?"

Eh what? All those stances are almost text book libertarian... so how could anyone be in doubt.

angularly··on Flamingo for Mac: A Modern Messaging App
Paid for is to replace messages because I hate how messages separates friends and message window.

But I feel like I've been cheated out of 10$ because it says its compatible with Messages, but after I bought it I find out I can't add my Apple account and talk with all my friends who have ios devices, so exactly how he can claim its compatible with Messages is beyond me.

angularly··on Ask HN: Should I go to Sweden for work?
Taxes are alot higher than in Russia. You'll probably end up paying 50-60% in total taxes (income + sales + various other hidden taxes on consumer goods etc.). So thats something to consider.
angularly··on Ask HN: I'm afraid I will always be a mediocre developer
wow, awesome reply, thanks. That's almost exactly how I feel about the subject.
angularly··on Calorie burner: How much better is standing up than sitting?
I try to stand up as much as possible - I probably stand 5-6 hours per day. I am using the kybun standing mat, and can recommend it. http://www.kybun.com/products-and-stores/kybun-products/kybo...

Get the big and thickest one, the small is just too small if you stand with legs slightly apart.

It trains your muscles while you stand.

angularly··on Hacker News is a social echo chamber
I guess I was flag-banned. I can't see the flag link anywhere, and I seem to remember it was there before. Must be that one post recently where I expressed a libertarian political view :)
angularly··on Linux only needs one 'killer' game to explode, says Battlefield director
Very few gamers would switch to Linux just for one game. We use Windows, not because we like it especially - hell most gamers I know, use Mac OS X for their professional work - but because it's on Windows (or consoles) all the games are. I predict Steam Machines will become a big hit tho, if the controller is as good as I hope.
angularly··on IE seems right, Chrome seems wrong
If you ever find yourself considering whether it's IE or the other browsers, that are doing it wrong... just assume IE is wrong, and you will most likely be right.
angularly··on Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc basic income for every adult
Not to talk about an enormous spike in unemployment rate, just like in all other countries where you get paid money for not doing anything. I.e. in Denmark where I come from, we have 400.000 people - out of a population of 6mill - who gain nothing or very little from working, to a point where it don't make sense to work at all, compared to just receiving unemployment pay. And logically people opt to just not work.
angularly··on Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc basic income for every adult
Wow, I hope they vote no. I moved to Switzerland recently to avoid the dominant socialism in northern Europe. But they are one of the last liberal stands down here, so there is a good chance it will fall through.
angularly··on Ask HN: How many "self-taught" programmers and how did you do it?
I started with a ZX81 around age 12, one or two models before Spectrum. It didn't have any games, but making games was a big motivation for me when getting it. Hell it didn't even have a tape station or any way to store your programs. So I would turn it on and type in some basic code from various computer magazines - usually some simple game - which would then be lost as soon as the computer was turned off again. It had 1kb of ram, which could be expanded with a bulky external cartridge of 16kb.

So I taught myself Basic. Later in school I was taught Comal 80, some variation of Cobol taught in Danish schools. I learned Pascal later, also in School. When Internet came to Denmark in 1995 I taught myself PHP v1+2+3, and later Javascript, and started my own little business creating websites, based on a selfmade CMS. PHP + javascript has served me well for 18 years, but I think its time to move on to something like Go - so thats what I am planning now.

angularly··on Ask HN: Why MariaDB and not Percona
Because the people behind MariaDB are the original mysql devs.
angularly··on What happens when you use a standing desk for two years
This geekdesk looks like the desk I have. My situation is much like the op.

I started really getting back/shoulder/arm pains a few years back, so I started standing up all day. In the beginning it was really hard, but after about one month you sorta get used to it and develop the necessary muscles.

Another thing I can recommend is getting one of the good standing mats. Best one I've found is this one: http://www.kybun.com/products-and-stores/kybun-products/kybo...

They are comfortable standing on, and they make you change positition even more and excersize more different muscles in legs and knees.
