outside of screwing over the content creator. You're visiting a site for content, and the one really getting paid is Brave

What are you talking about. They are stealing from content creators / whom ever took the time to create the website to begin with and taking their money. They are literally leeches.

I don't care about the ad business and believe there are better ways to do this, but this is scummy stuff.

Use an ad blocker or whatever you want but this is another company profiting from it.

its worse

>In June, reports emerged, which stated that the company had been quietly inserting affiliate links for certain search queries without telling users. For instance, Brave had added a home widget for Binance a month prior, which turned out to redirect users via its affiliate offering.

They literally remove ads, that people and companies have paid for. Then they insert their first party ads that another company paid them for. Shady asf
angryasian··on Brave browser now blocks cookie banners
what are you talking about ? Do you know how ads work ? Brave is literally stealing and profiting from it.

Brave will remove the ads from a site, that a person/company has paid for to ad provider. The ad provider thats supposed to pay the website host / content creator / whatever.

Now Brave will insert their own ads and that another company has paid them to insert. So they are stealing and making money from the effort that someone else is expecting.

Removing ads that people/companies have paid for and inserting Brave ads that other people have paid Brave for is fundamentally a scumbag play
angryasian··on TikTok shadowbanning videos from Nikita Bier's new Gas App
funny this post is acting like I should know who Nikita Bier is and making accusations. Maybe his posts aren't popular and no one cares. This sounds more like trying to drum up publicity for people to look into whatever this app is
angryasian··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
> Why would I pay monthly for sync and have no control

I'm not sure what you mean by this, I use github to sync across devices, you could technically use any solution you like.

angryasian··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
theres a plugin for that - https://github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin
angryasian··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
I'm not sure about the issues with your computer, but there are a ton of plugins for tasks and boards. What type of email integration are you looking for ?
angryasian··on Who thought putting a casino in everyone’s pocket was a good idea?
Regulation is better than leaving it up to the black markets.
angryasian··on Cruz: I Never Put Java in My Resume No Matter How Much Experience I Have
seems like clickbait to me. Nothing of value
angryasian··on Cruz: I Never Put Java in My Resume No Matter How Much Experience I Have
It was always good enough, and evolved with the times. C# was under tight control MS for most of that time, thats why Java was widely adopted. You can't make that statement without addressing the history of the two languages
angryasian··on Golden raises $40M Series B led by A16Z for decentralized knowledge protocol

angryasian··on Meta in Free Fall: Users Leaving, Revenue Down, Stock Keeps Falling
Anyone that thinks this fails to understand the impact Facebook has had on the division and polarization of people through the spread of mis/disinformation and what companies like Cambridge Analytica has been able to accomplish through the Facebook platform.

We can say this is true about youtube, twitter and probably someday tiktok, but at least for now Facebook / Meta is absolutely the worst as they not only sold/leaked the PII but they've also been actively encouraging all of this.

angryasian··on How long do software engineers stay at a job? (2021)
Really ? That seems about average to me. A good leader should easily be able handle this reasonable within 6 months.
angryasian··on LinkedIn ran social experiments on 20M users over 5 years
I think the only real issue is summarized here.

>“The study has an inherent bias,” Dr. Flick said. “It shows that, if you want to get more jobs, you should be on LinkedIn more.”

angryasian··on Amazon built a new unit to fix its engineering culture
Management at Amazon was the biggest problem. The don't index for soft skills. They want procedural robots that can memorize 100 stories to cover every LP.

Culture fit matters and you can't fix the culture when thats what they are hiring for.

angryasian··on Tik Tok is a national security threat
Cambridge analytica / Facebook misinformation and usage within its borders would let you know all social media companies are a problem
angryasian··on Tik Tok is a national security threat
This is any in app browser that has access to it. Its not specific to tiktok. Nothing against you but this disinformation towards tiktok is laugable
angryasian··on The Sugar Babies of Stanford University
men love to shame women over sexuality. A man does this, no one blinks an eye. A woman.. oh no
angryasian··on Forum Channels: A space for organized conversations
I get discord is the hot thing but I find it to be so noisy. Maybe its because i'm old but I don't know how people are able to find relevant things. Its like slack on speed.
angryasian··on Tim Cook's response to Android texting compatibility: 'buy your mom an iPhone'
today on HN shill moves goal posts. First you brought up encryption.

second it's not apples obligation to force encryption, but if they really cared about your privacy it's as easy as releasing iMessage for Android.

Apple won't even talk about compatibility for Android so technically it is on Apple to offer a solution if they really cared

Third you brought up encryption not me

angryasian··on Tim Cook's response to Android texting compatibility: 'buy your mom an iPhone'
They've released whats obtainable through imessages "encryption". If it was so important to Apple that their users privacy matters to them, they'd give people a way to cross platform encryption.

Apple iMessage

Message content limited. Subpoena: can render basic subscriber information. 18 USC §2703(d): can render 25 days of iMessage lookups and from a target number. Pen Register: no capability. *Search Warrant: can render backups of a target device; if target uses iCloud backup, the encryption keys should also be provided with content return can also acquire iMessages from iCloud returns if target has enabled Messages in iCloud.

angryasian··on Tim Cook's response to Android texting compatibility: 'buy your mom an iPhone'
What happened to this HN community. Apple took what was an open standard for interoperability, added "paywall" features on top of it, and its even to the point where people are ostracized for not buying into this paywall.

This behavior should be condemned not celebrated.

angryasian··on Tim Cook's response to Android texting compatibility: 'buy your mom an iPhone'
when looked at by manuf. this isn't true at all.
angryasian··on Tim Cook's response to Android texting compatibility: 'buy your mom an iPhone'
Meta's whatsapp is not great either. Telegram or Signal are better alternatives.
angryasian··on Tim Cook's response to Android texting compatibility: 'buy your mom an iPhone'
Since they are contributing to school bullying. not having a blue bubble shouldn't matter, but we forget how brutal school was.
angryasian··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
Its definitely a compromise, but Google is ultimately at the mercy of the carriers. We can sit back behind our keyboards and criticize but it is a way to get something going. I don't think carriers have any incentive to improve this area, and probably nothing would happen
angryasian··on TikTok’s Poison Pill
agree, I wish this discussion was less about politics and more of the impact on social media
