anextomp··on AI Clones Your Voice After Listening for 5 Seconds (2018)
I'm looking forward to an AI assistant that can use my voice to make phone calls

I'm sure some people with selective mutism that would like to use text to speech with their own voice

> How will we adapt?

Digitally signing audio clips

anextomp··on Where you are born is more predictive of your future than any other factor
That, on average, they would be worse off if they were born elsewhere. It's a predictor - nobody was suggesting that it's the only factor, or that it's deterministic.
anextomp··on Tesla gets stolen with keyfob hack on camera in seconds
Once you have unlimited physical access to the hardware, software protections are worthless.

And that's ignoring that it could just be sold for parts.

anextomp··on ‘No girls born’ for past three months in area of India covering 132 villages
It would still be possible to find a compact subregion of a large region where no girls were born. However, the fact that it was 132 villages makes this seem unlikely, unless the large region contained many thousands of villages.
anextomp··on Despite High Hopes, Self-Driving Cars Are ‘Way in the Future’
A) We can't put a brain-equivalent computer in the car, and can't program it to be as good as a brain at driving

B) We have higher standards for autonomous cars. The people saying it can never happen are saying it will never be perfect in all conditions, not that it will never be better than humans.

anextomp··on I was wrong about spreadsheets (2017)
Serverless is really the wrong term to use here. That refers to a specific way of handling cloud infrastructure (the point being that there are still servers, you just don't care)

Excel is used for client-side only programs. There are no servers at all. All programs originally were client-side only originally because networks didn't exist.

anextomp··on Pentagon has a laser that can identify people at a distance by their heartbeat
100% success, expected time until death 3-70 years with a 95% confidence interval
anextomp··on Love It or Hate It, Java Continues to Evolve
With kotlin, the final .toList() call can be removed
anextomp··on Japan plans new driver's license system for elderly as accidents surge
I could purchase a semi truck today and drive it despite the fact i'm not licensed. I don't see how it's any different - the thing stopping people from driving vehicles that they don't have the license for is that it is illegal and you can be punished.

Repossession doesn't come into the equation - the same way I can buy a truck, they can buy/own a car that they aren't allowed to drive. It makes sense that they would sell it and buy one they are licensed to drive, but nobody's making them if they want to sit in it and make car noises while not moving.

anextomp··on How I Made $200k When I Was 16 Years Old Through Coding (2018)
A person taking a job in teaching benefits society as a whole but disadvantages them individually. We should transfer some of that benefit to them to make it an attractive option by increasing taxes and salary.
anextomp··on Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox (2017)
It could be argued that it is similar to predatory pricing, where you accept a loss on your offering to drive competitors away before increasing the price.

Amazon video as its own service would not be able to survive so it is unfair on services that just try to do video.

anextomp··on Tesla Model S caught fire while charging (Belgium)
In an electric car the battery is essentially the only part that can catch fire. If there's flames, the battery is already burning and you can't really put it out.

The only other thing would be an electric component overheating or shorting, but that would cause a small explosion rather than a continuous fire.

anextomp··on Net worth of Americans aged 18 to 35 has dropped 34 percent since 1996: study
The percentage is very misleading because you can have a negative net worth. The average could be $1, in which case you get a 500% increase by giving everyone $5.

That doesn't discount the article entirely, but I wish people would stop using misleading statistics for completely valid points. It really ruins your argument.

anextomp··on Let’s fix up Notre Dame with concrete and steel, but let the sun shine into it
The people with the power to change the treaty don't materially care about the restoration and the people in change of the restoration don't have the power to change the treaty.

Without some huge effort to range awareness in favour of changing the Notre Dame for the better, the treaty will remain and those in charge of the repairs will have no say in how they go ahead.

anextomp··on Heavily processed food like ready meals and ice-cream linked to early death
It's worth noting from the paper that this doesn't control for income, or any other factors that are correlated with early death.

anextomp··on Ask HN: Developers with ADHD/ADD, how do you cope?
It's similar to colourblindness, in that it's really hard to tell because it's all you've ever known. Your best bet is probably to try an online test and go to see a doctor if it suggests there could be something there.

This one looks good: https://www.additudemag.com/adhd-symptoms-test-adults/

anextomp··on Firms That Promised Ransomware Decryption Almost Always Just Pay the Hackers
The term is pseudonymous - the list of all transactions is available for anyone to look at but in theory you can't link bitcoin addresses to people.

However, in practice, most people buy bitcoins via a method that requires ID, which links their ID to one of their addresses. Multiple addresses can then be linked together by cluster analysis based on usage patterns

anextomp··on Housing Can’t Be Both Affordable and a Good Investment (2018)
Buying hedges against the market when you intend to live in the house. When the market goes up, your rent will increase, but the price to stay in the house you own is still zero.
anextomp··on French ISPs Ordered to Block Sci-Hub and LibGen
Yes, both would work. Other countries have started with DNS blocks and eventually moved to IP blocks, which would prevent Google DNS from bypassing the block. For now though, changing your DNS will be sufficient.

I'm not aware of any block that is effective against TOR. Even if that were possible, I bet sci-hub has a .onion mirror, which is by definition not blockable.

anextomp··on Credder Wants to Create an Equivalent to “Rotten Tomatoes” for News
Their "adjusted score" means that films with more ratings are rated higher. Older films have far fewer ratings by critics, same with smaller films.
anextomp··on Credder Wants to Create an Equivalent to “Rotten Tomatoes” for News
This is because films with more ratings are rated higher. Older films have far fewer ratings by critics, same with smaller films. Add on the fact that each critic's review is distilled to a positive/negative boolean value, and it's clear to see why RT's best films is really just a list of films they are confident you'll like.
anextomp··on Tesla Model Y
They are retail prices. It's been known for a few weeks now that it would be ~10% more expensive than the model 3, where the standard range model is $35k pre-"savings"

anextomp··on Schools in England Introduce a New Subject: Mindfulness
That seems like a fairly healthy thing to learn, no?

Sometimes we need to acknowledge that our brain can cause us to do things we don't want to, and not beat ourselves up for it. Obviously that can go too far, and you need to anticipate the consequences of your actions, owning your conscious decisions.

anextomp··on Sex censorship killed the internet we love
Was that... not obvious?

Really, what were you expecting?

anextomp··on A Daughter’s Disability and a Father’s Awakening
It's fairly clear that the doctor did not mean that all people with Down's syndrome are happy. When talking about large groups in that manner, the average is implied.

"The dutch are tall" does not mean that all dutch people are tall, but that on average they are taller than ourselves.

Yes, talking about large groups of people can devolve into prejudice and discrimination, but in this case we're dealing with a group of people who are substantially, physically different. It is rational to point out the impacts of those differences.
