andyjenn··on How to price your web application
I'm just about to launch my online application - basically online storage using S3 with some pretty front end functionality specifically for the aerospace industry...I'm basing my monthly price plan on the amount of files uploaded (with a markup and covering an estimated maximum usage) but I'm also thinking maybe I should price it like most products and price per user with an enterprise "unlimited" package..anyone had any similar experiences where your costs were based in part from Amazon S3?

..I'm a very good driver, only drive on the driveway, only drive on Saturdays...

andyjenn··on Which database should my startup use?
..after the heart attack inducing story about GDrive, I'm now close to having another one in laughter from this posting...

andyjenn··on In a Search Refinement, a Chance to Rival Google (NYT article on Powerset)
I attended the Startup school in March and since I'd flown 12 hours to get to SF, I thought I'd try to meet up with some companies to drum up some interest in my startup. Amazingly this ended up with me pitching (my first ever - eek!) to Barney, Ron Kaplan and Lorenzo Thiel - the main guys at Powerset

They liked my idea - not enough to give any cash though:( - and I'm on their beta testing list.

They're keen to use Powerset as platform for other applications to exploit their NLP index via APIs.

I'll update you when I get my first play with it...

P.S. Bit late Paul G, but Barney sends his regards...

andyjenn··on How can a non-hacker (with very basic C++ knowledge only) start a start-up successfully?
I'm using eLance - this is just to get something started and then I'm hacking the features I want myself as and when I learn...oh yeah, and then get a co-founder with an unfeasibly large brain who can help you out!
andyjenn··on Work and Wives
Thats a great idea! My wife and I discussed my reasons for starting a startup and she is being very supportive from the outset, but sometimes gets frustrated that I don't "communicate my feelings" very well. She hardly sees me and doesn't have a clue about computers whereas I'm excited, stressed, anxious, and so focused on technical things for 12 hours a day, I sometimes struggle with the "How was your day darling?" type conversation in the evening. Without sounding trite, communication is vital in a marriage so working on a startup shouldn't be different to any other important decision you make. I'll take this involvment on board - thanks a lot...
andyjenn··on Startup founders, how old are you?
I'm 31; tinkered with technology from a young age, did the University thing, backpacked around the world, now married with a kid. I think the age depends on what you want your startup to give you...fulfillment, enlightenment - its not just about acquisitions or IPOs. I think a rounded view on life would help some of the very guys not to end up like software's answer to Britney Spears!?
