andyfleming··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
There’s a project Nub that is meant to bring the benefits of bun to node, which you might appreciate. It also may articulate that gap as to why people like using bun.

andyfleming··on Zellij: A terminal workspace with batteries included
I like Zellij, but one point of friction I ran into was it not loading profile configurations like .zprofile. https://github.com/zellij-org/zellij/issues/1434

Is that similar to the functionality they're targeting with Mojo?

> Two deaths occurred — one caused by cryptococcal meningitis and one by severe dementia with agitation owing to the progression of preexisting neurocognitive impairment.
andyfleming··on 10 out of 12 people cured in Type 1 Diabetes Study
If the islet cells persist then it's effectively cured. If new cells have to be injected regularly it's still likely to be a very effective treatment.
andyfleming··on Air Lab – A portable and open air quality measuring device
I haven't had any issues with lock-ups.

The LEDs and screens can be adjusted (or turned off) on a schedule with the latest firmware.

andyfleming··on The Bun Shell
> I prefer YAML on my Markdown front matter. It's more readable because of no brackets, quotes, or commas.

YAML is full of pitfalls. I think the brackets/braces and quotes are worth giving up a small amount readability to eliminate the ambiguity.

andyfleming··on The Bun Shell
JSON5 is a more reasonable format for config files, in my opinion.
andyfleming··on The Windows installer of ImageMagick will no longer be signed
I'm not sure whether or not there's an issue of entitlement, but there's certainly incentives to develop a popular package (even if superficially). One big one is career development. For people early in their career, it's something they can proactively invest in, as where they can't magically materialize years of experience overnight.
andyfleming··on ESLint: Flat Config Rollout Plan
I use prettier for this reason. There’s very few config options on purpose. If I use eslint it’s for additional issue detection, not formatting.

andyfleming··on Midjourney – For React
Looks cool, but a bummer that it uses tailwind.
andyfleming··on Show HN: Multi-display screen sharing with CoScreen
I'm not too familiar with all of the features of coscreen, but I've been really enjoying Tuple and it has a linux client beta. https://tuple.app/downloads/linux
andyfleming··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
Not independently, but if wrapped with a loop, given memory, given internet access, and directives as intrinsic motivations, it could, in theory, come to conclusions and take actions to acquire resources aligned with its motivations. If that outer loop does not have rules (or rules that are effective and immutable), it could become very powerful and potentially misaligned with our interests.
andyfleming··on A third place? I'm not sure I even have a second anymore
One can enjoy spending time with coworkers at work, see the value of being in person together, AND not want to commute. At the end of the day, we all may choose to work remotely over being in office, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any trade-offs.
andyfleming··on Orion Browser
I'd call that OS telemetry as opposed to browser/application telemetry.
andyfleming··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
This is a product that I actually _would_ pay for as an individual. It's reasonably priced and worth the increase in efficiency and better experience. Plus their pricing is fair and flexible.
andyfleming··on The Velveteen Rabbit was always more than a children’s book
Oh ya! I’ve seen his stuff before. Thanks for the reminder!

I still wish there were more sites/foundries with licenses like his, but helpful nonetheless!

andyfleming··on The Velveteen Rabbit was always more than a children’s book
It's definitely nice. I've been trying to search for somewhere that sells fonts that can be used for web that aren't licensed by number of pageviews. I know there's free fonts, like Google Fonts, but I'm looking for something nicer that I can buy a reasonably priced site license for. For reference, the body copy on that site uses Miller Text, which would cost $4,000 for an unlimited pageview version. That would not even include the italicized version or multiple weights. Maybe I wouldn't need to worry about it for most projects, but I don't want a bill that can spike to $100s without notice based on however they calculate their pageviews.
andyfleming··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
I'm a little tired of the rhetoric about Netflix adding ads. It's only on an entry-level account that is subsidized from the normal pricing (IIUC, correct me if I'm wrong). You could argue that they've artificially inflated the price of the normal plan or that it's a slippery slope, but it's not like they've forced ads on the existing plans.

I think what's more interesting/concerning/insidious is hidden ad content like product placement. It's getting to the point where personalized product placement could be embedded in shows dynamically.

andyfleming··on Feather – open source icons
This is great!

I'd consider making the search experience more like https://www.flaticon.com/. The drop-shadow boxes are too distracting. Adding consistent spacing will help too.

I love that it's easy to get to the source, but having a page in between would be nice to see other icons from the set and information about where the icon is from.

andyfleming··on Moving from React to htmx
> It's still JavaScript, still React—just with some work pushed to the server instead of the client.

This is being too reductive of the design of Remix. It is closer to traditional web applications in handling form submissions. There's no client-side state management needed for those use cases.

Whether it's the "winner" or not, really depends on use case, but it is decently different than a traditional SPA.

andyfleming··on Ask HN: Why do people come to HN for Stripe resolutions?
Even if they are viable, it would eat into profit significantly. It's a trade-off between customer happiness and profit. The reality is that even when a large number of customers are occasionally unhappy, they may still not leave the company/product for various reasons. Companies then choose to accept that custom unhappiness since it does not impact their revenue enough practically. Arguably, they have an obligation to make that choice. It's the "best" thing for the company, at least in the shorter term.
andyfleming··on The self-fulfilling prophecy of React
jQuery and React are apples and oranges. React was more part of a paradigm shift than a better jQuery.
andyfleming··on 59% of Americans worry student loan forgiveness will make inflation worse
I’m not sure if it would be that significant in the short-term. Required student loans payments are still deferred, so cancelling them wouldn’t increase cash flow (at least today).
andyfleming··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
Sure, a poor choice of words. Node compatibility is what matters to me (and likely many others) practically as a node developer. Deno's benefits don't outweigh the costs of migrating to it and adopting it more broadly, in my opinion.
andyfleming··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
It actually seems more vendor agnostic in description. It's an overall advantage of bun, but there isn't any first-class bun service pitched (at least at this point).
andyfleming··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
It is scary, but it already seems more stable and backward-compatible than Deno. With some testing and further stabilization, I have a feeling bun might be a much more feasible and beneficial move.
