andydrizen··on Show HN: Tube Tracker, an iOS App for the London Underground
Hi, I'm the creator of Tube Tracker. In its first two years, a colleague and I built the departure board section. After going solo, I've spent almost all the free time over the last year building this app into what you see today. I don't have any funding or staff. It's taken a lot of work, and a lot of luck, but this week my app is being displayed on the front page of the UK App Store. I'd love to hear what you guys think of it.
andydrizen··on Doctoral degrees: The disposable academic (2010)
I finished my maths PhD last year. The concept that PhD grads earn less than people who opted out of academia earlier makes a lot of sense to me.

PhDs grads aren't financially driven - they are mathematically driven - to the extent of thinking about problems all day. Everyone I knew used to keep a notebook and pen by the bed because waking up in the night with an idea was so common. With this much passion, the desire to leave academia for a well-paid industry job is low.

andydrizen··on CSS Tube Map
Yes, otherwise it's copyright infringement. I've been working on a mobile app for some time. As an indie developer, the map license is almost fatal for my project.

Did you have to get a licence to display this? TfL are pretty strict about reproducing their map, even more so if it's going to be available offline on a mobile device.

andydrizen··on Wish I was here by Zach Braff
Doesn't want to take money because it alters his vision of the movie. $10K - have a line in the film. $7K - name a character.

Not true. We have 24hour pubs.
andydrizen··on ShowHN: Hacky 2 – Hacker News for Mac with Favorites, iCloud, comments etc.
Sorry to be "that guy", but there's a typo in your subheading: "Never ever loose your favorite Hacker News stories"
andydrizen··on Show HN: Emails that Self-Destruct and Notify You When Read
This service converts your email into an image. You can save a copy of the image, and keep it forever, even though the mail will disappear. It's novel, but I'm not sure I see use-case for it.
