andy81··on Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Switch
League of Legends and Minecraft came out ~15 years ago and never left the top 10 most played PC games.

It's hard to release new live-service games too. Many people will just be happy to play LoL for the rest of their lives.

andy81··on Net 9.0 LINQ Performance Improvements
Nobody complaining about Dev Kit would be unaware of the base C# extension.
andy81··on Net 9.0 LINQ Performance Improvements
The C# experience already got rug-pulled with Dev Kit.

I'm not going to spend time working for free on tools that MS charges a subscription to use.

andy81··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
It's not just the regulation.

It's the knowledge that users will mark your messages as junk if there's no easy unsubscribe button.

With the re-centralization of email, reputation score in Outlook/Gmail is critical.

andy81··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
Assistant PM.

He gave the largest party a majority in exchange for a referendum on first-past-the-post.

andy81··on CrowdStrike accepting the PwnieAwards for "most epic fail" at defcon
The company should be fined so heavily that they become a goverment asset.

With current shareholders wiped out entirely, it should then be re-listed.

andy81··on Can we stop the decline of monarch butterflies and other pollinators?
Use of many natural resources jumped by orders of magnitude since the industrial revolution; comparing the current situation with historical records would give you a false sense of confidence.

That's actually part of the problem with climate change.

andy81··on Windows recovery environment and bootable USB creator in 200kb
You can use the -ExecutionPolicy argument to get around that.

It's not a security boundary, just something to stop users accidentally opening an email attachment like they will with bat/vbs.

andy81··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
Even if there was a canary release process for code updates, the config updates seem to have been on a separate channel.

The expectation being that people want up-to-date virus detection rules constantly even if they don't want potentially breaking changes.

The missed edge case being an untested config that breaks existing code.

Source: Pure speculation, don't quote this in news articles.

andy81··on The CrowdStrike file that broke everything was full of null characters?
Aside from aimbots, there's plenty of abusable legitimate information exposed to the client.

E.g. For CS:GO, the volume of footsteps and gunshots vary by distance so you could use them to triangulate an enemy's position.

Other countries have a larger denominator to reduce the proportion of visits vs arbitrary detention and torture.

andy81··on RC4 with a Deck of Cards
Old encryption algorithm, don't use it.

Infamous for "kerberoasting", among other exploits.

andy81··on Nvidia pursues $30B custom chip opportunity with new unit
Diminishing returns on more pixels is also a factor.

4k vs 1440 is 2.4x the pixels (and related compute/heat/energy), but a barely-visible difference in visual clarity.

We can see successful consoles like the Switch that have given up on competing on resolution already.

andy81··on Just 137 crypto miners use 2.3% of total U.S. power
That would require the price to drop proportionally (or waiting for halvings).

Yeah, but nobody applies for those.

A CTE would work too.
andy81··on Password may not contain: select, insert, update, delete, drop
You're not the first to come up with that exploit-

andy81··on Let's talk about joins
If I was going to add anything -

"Vertical join" is normally called union.

"Right join" is just (bad) syntax sugar and should be avoided. Left join with the tables reversed is the usual convention.

The join condition for inner is optional- if it's always true then you get a "cross join". Can be useful to show all the possible combinations of two fields.

Use two trucks when needed?

This is a really simple fix that the rest of the world does better.

andy81··on ICO fines HelloFresh £140k for spam texts and emails
In a moment of frustration several years ago I marked my mobile sim provider as spam for the same reason.

They later deleted my account, and had apparently only notified me via SMS using the same marketing account (and no other channels).

andy81··on Signal commit Username Integration Test
The mobile number requirement was always a feature of signal.

The friction is slight for users, but higher for scammers that might go through thousands of accounts. Telegram is too easy to sign up, so it's mostly scams.

andy81··on Pirates of the Caribbean (Metric Edition) (2017)
You could make the same argument for 0-30C.

Perhaps even more so, since 1F is a meaningless level of precision for most activities.

andy81··on The Sound Proof Booths of Silence
The noise is a common giveaway in pro League of Legends despite similar efforts.

Usually when a player is walking up to a hidden enemy the crowd changes in a noticeable way, even on the stream. It's not an individual shout so much as the overall noise.

andy81··on I built Excel for Uber and they ditched it
I used it once to run a Monte-Carlo simulation in a spreadsheet.

After enabling iterative calculation and manual calculation, every press of refresh runs a loop. Fun stuff.

Nag on boot already means that you can't refuse as easily as you can consent.

Presumably they don't harrass users to accept the agreement once already accepted.

andy81··on Grayscale was unreasonably denied its Bitcoin ETF, court rules
Why would a government want to subsidise cryptocurrency with tax advantages?

Proponents think it will collapse the dollar and bankrupt all governments.

Opponents think it's negative-sum and the sooner cryptocurrency dies the better for industries that actually create value.

Either way it's a (mild) attack on effective government and civilization more generally. The less subsidies for traders the better, from the perspective of a currently-influential government.

andy81··on SEC charges Impact Theory for unregistered offering of NFTs
The normal method is to generate a collection of a 10k NFTs and sell back and forth between your own accounts for $100 each.

The hope is that some sucker will buy them for $10, thinking that it's a bargain.

andy81··on Simple PowerShell things allowing you to dig a bit deeper than usual
There's a huge amount of powershell support for admins on MSSQL.

e.g. https://dbatools.io/commands/ https://github.com/microsoft/ReportingServicesTools https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/power-bi/

Also all the normal Active Directory and file system tools, but those are too broad to go into.
