andy-x··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
So, Israel wants to give them more motivation?
andy-x··on ROOT: analyzing petabytes of data scientifically
What is not cool is that ROOT was "designed" and built by people who had absolutely no idea how to run a large-scale software project. And it shows everywhere - it's one huge monolith that you have to constantly fight to do anything slightly non-trivial. I'm happy that I don't have to use it frequently, though I still have some exposure.
andy-x··on Latency numbers every programmer should know
Every programmer should know how to represent "the numbers". Without reasonable representation your numbers are just useless crap.
andy-x··on Alexei Navalny has died
You probably mean "to prevent military tension"? When tension already becomes war, it's sort of pointless to continue economic integration in the hope that it can stop war.
andy-x··on Military whistleblower claims US has UFO retrieval program
Obviously they come from a multiverse where there is no gravity.
andy-x··on Skyscraper Proposed for 2700 Sloat Boulevard in Outer Sunset, San Francisco
But will it blend?
andy-x··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
Pavlov's dog would approve.
andy-x··on The New Hydrogen Car That Travels 2k Km with a Single Tank
Naturally, from the CLOUD :)
andy-x··on I've said it all before but here we go again
From all her posts I got quite different impression. I feel like she is abusing her position to spread misinformation about how particle physics actually works. Repeating again and again "You are all idiots and do not know what you do and only care about funding" does not help her much in building a valid scientific argument.
andy-x··on “Hello world” is slower in C++ than in C (Linux)
So, if C printf is slower than assembler code that outputs "hello world", then C is garbage?
andy-x··on Democrats are realizing they must become more moderate
This is pure BS. The self-appointed progessives/wokes are not moderate or centrist in any way, but they have huge influence over Democrats' policy. And they will be responsible for the Democrats' losses in the following years.
andy-x··on Capital One Data Breach Class Action Settlement
It is legit, but you need to prove your losses due to the breach.
andy-x··on Thirty-Six Methods of Mathematical Proof
One more:

Proof by divinity: "Oh, for Christ’s sake!"

andy-x··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
Did your grandma have a business license when she was babysitting you?
andy-x··on Russia's economy is back on its feet
Official exchange rate is meaningless as you cannot transfer dollars into or out of Russia. Based on some internal sources (not super exact, but still indicative), I think cash exchange on black market is closer to RUR 150 per USD today.
andy-x··on The Next 10 Days Will Decide This War
Hmm, the only thing that I was able to find is here: https://www.the-sun.com/news/4795768/russia-mutiny-army-ukra... It is from two weeks ago, but I did not hear it before, and I could not find any other confirmation from sources in Russia.
andy-x··on Inside Putin's Circle
FSB is former KGB, so indeed it is Stasi, but KGB may be even more familiar name from those times.
andy-x··on Are sprouted potatoes safe?
As a kid, I lived in a part of the world where we did not buy potatoes in the supermarket. We harvested them in autumn and stored until next summer, storage was a basement (cool, dry, dark place). By the spring it inevitably sprouted, we had to remove sprouts and sort out rotten ones (usually done only once). No one ever got sick from sprouted potatoes, that is the most ridiculous thing that I heard. Green potatoes are those that were exposed to light, people said it's not good to eat, but I guess you would have to eat a lot of them to see the effect.
andy-x··on Putin says Western sanctions are akin to declaration of war
Very good video, indeed. Explains how Putin and Russian propaganda machine turned Ukrainians into non-humans in perception of many Russian folks.
andy-x··on Putin says Western sanctions are akin to declaration of war
You realize that TASS is state-owned and just repeats the same propaganda that comes from Kremlin, don't you?

EDIT: To be more specific, the news I heard on Ukrainian media was that corridors were indeed open for a brief period, but fire started again almost at the moment when transports with refugees began moving, giving them no chance to leave.

andy-x··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
Not going to happen, major reason for annexation was to keep Sebastopol as the major/only Russia navy base in the Black Sea. That reason will never vanish as there are no other suitable locations to relocate that base.
andy-x··on Ask HN: Why are there so few single-letter command line utilities / tools?
I thought UNIX was case-sensitive from very beginning (though early terminals probably were not). Also digits/punctuation can be counted too, in fact '.' is a (shell) command.
andy-x··on A Safer San Francisco
When people start recognizing that Mayor Breed is a part of the problem, and not part of the solution, we may get a chance for solving SF issues.
andy-x··on Using mechanical tools improves our language skills, study finds
My language skills improve every time I hit a finger with a hammer :)
andy-x··on Tesla FSD Beta Barely Avoids Crashing into Pole
I think it plays more into the theory that it would be a lot more autopilot crashes if humans did not intervene at the last moment.
andy-x··on Tesla FSD Beta Barely Avoids Crashing into Pole
Can AI feel suicidal (or is it homicidal) after being tested for so many hours on San Jose streets?
andy-x··on Python and Lua (2019)
Lua version of the code is incomprehensible. Could it be that if you implement the same thing in Python it will also run faster?
andy-x··on Curiosity Is Better Than Being Smart?
"Curious people become smarter ..."

Smarter and smart are not the same thing.

andy-x··on Update about the October 4th outage
Such a BS. FB imagining that they are their own Internet but failing in a most miserable way because they need actual Internet to communicate.
andy-x··on JupyterLab Desktop App now available
One more Electron app on my desktop - no, thanks. Just install anaconda and run jupyter with the browser, as good god intended :)
