andrewzah··on Linus and Pull Requests (2012)
Reminder that Linus is part of the reason you and I have a job in the first place.

How many people contribute to the linux kernel? Let’s see how quickly you get jaded after dealing with people refusing to read basic instructions.

Also, reminder that not every contributor is desirable. Linus has a specific vision and criteria for his project. It’s true he could use kinder language, but I imagine he gets fed up having to deal with this sort of stuff over -decades-.

andrewzah··on Linus and Pull Requests (2012)
I don’t think Linus is being unreasonable here. He has specific standards he expects.

It’s true that his language could be more polite, but what he expects is not a secret.

andrewzah··on PipeWire: The Linux audio/video bus
"My bluetooth headset can now use the HFP profile with the mSBC codec (16 kHz sample rate) instead of the terrible CVSD codec (8 kHz sample rate) with the basic HSP profile."

What configuration did you have to do to get this to work? I'm also using pipewire built from the latest master (PipeWire 0.3.22).

andrewzah··on PipeWire: The Linux audio/video bus
FWIW I had issues with it on debian 10, until I built and installed it from master. It was a bit smoother on debian 11 but I couldn't get bluetooth to work.
andrewzah··on Twin sisters worth millions thanks to female gamers
Let's not gatekeep gaming. Playing games is gaming. There are plenty of actual games on mobile. Just because you don't play those games, doesn't mean mobile gaming as a whole isn't "gaming".
andrewzah··on Twin sisters worth millions thanks to female gamers
No. They're saying that toddlers also get socially conditioned from birth. So the behaviors that they display are not 100% inherent. So how toddlers act isn't really a good (scientific) argument for nature vs nurture.
andrewzah··on ICANN Refuses to Accredit Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Due to His ‘Background’
What is the point of the legal system if everyone is just going to apply extra-legal, -arbitrary- punishments on top of it?

Firstly, this ignores the fact that most crime occurs due to socioeconomic reasons. So you're kicking someone in the head after they're already down and have served a punishment doled out by a judge.

Secondly, obviously the -type- of crime should make things more difficult or impossible in certain cases. But arbitrarily punishing people for having any conviction at all is the opposite of what a healthy society should be doing. This thoroughly ensures that recidivism rates will remain high, because what's the point in trying to cooperate with a society that brands you as a criminal no matter what punishment you serve or what you do throughout the rest of your life?

We need to focus on rehabilitation, not continuing to punish people for the rest of their lives.

"That might not be fair, but that's how it is."

Sorry to be blunt, but hopefully this punitive attitude will die out as older people die out. This is one American attitude that I absolutely despise.

andrewzah··on ICANN Refuses to Accredit Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Due to His ‘Background’
So serving a prison sentence is not enough in this case? If someone is convicted of things like pirating, we should punish them permanently in random domains for the rest of their life? Gee, I wonder why recidivism rates are so high...
andrewzah··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
You are always free to choose another employer. She literally already found work with another employer.

If enough people speak with their wallets, then disney will follow that. It's really that simple.

You are suggesting that corporations are one monolithic entity, which is simply not true.

I have no idea what you mean here by white privilege or corporate privilege. Nobody has the right to a job. Saying dumb things online and getting consequences is applicable to everyone, because corporations only follow the money.

andrewzah··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
Anything and everything is apparently cancel culture now. There are no "consequences" anymore, it's all just "cancel culture".

This phenomenon is not new to humanity. There is no immunity from the consequences that can occur from saying things online. If one doesn't like Disney's behavior, then I suggest speaking with one's wallet.

andrewzah··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
There is no right to a job. There is no right to immunity from consequences from saying things online. The end.

If you don't like how Disney operates, then vote with your wallet. That's literally the only thing companies care about, and is the only reason why she was let go in the first place.

Saying we should force companies to retain hires despite what they say online, is ridiculous.

"Might be nice to have the time ;-)"

It's not about having the time, but -making- the time. For the most part we simply do not prioritize looking into the source code of the libraries we use, to any meaningful degree. (I'm guilty of this for sure). Hence things like leftpad and the many other instances of dependency controversies.

In an ideal world we [and our employers] would put emphasis on inspecting the huge amounts of code we pull in and allocate time for it.

andrewzah··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
No, I meant nebulous as in unclear, hazy, or undefined.

Nobody knows what the YouTube algorithm is going to decide is inappropriate next. Their site’s wording is very vague and unclear as well.

You have youtubers censoring swear words now, and people uploading footage from video games like TF2 have had issues before.

andrewzah··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
Well, what else might it be? Agadmator is just a chess channel. He does breakdowns of chess games and that’s pretty much it.
andrewzah··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
“ The researchers now suggest that social-media platforms should incorporate chess language in their algorithms to avoid future incidents like this.”

Or maybe don’t automate banning YouTube channels via nebulous black boxes? Or can advertisers stop being afraid of anything and everything?

andrewzah··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
Appealing to popularity fallacy.

For anyone in the US you do need an ID to use Bitcoin in any practical manner. Exchanges require it. Avoiding this requires jumping through multiple hoops, especially if you want to convert to cash.

People don’t think about the environmental consequences because most people don’t think about that anyways. We’re also on HN, where software companies use or rent computational power with zero regard to the environmental impact. And for Bitcoin owners it’s specifically in their financial interest not to think about how Bitcoin miners are using more electricity than actual countries.

All of that said, Bitcoin is a failed experiment. People aren’t using it as an actual currency, they’re hoarding it. Partly because of the model and mostly because trying to actually spend Bitcoin sucks badly.

Bitcoin is going to be replaced by a cryptocurrency that’s actually usable and competitive with existing payment networks. And hopefully one that doesn’t use such an electricity intensive model.

andrewzah··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
Living in reality is different than justifying it. Saying that Bitcoin miners using up electricity means there was no better use is not derived from reality- that’s your own personal viewpoint.

I don’t need to make any argument as I’m not the one presenting anything here. All I’m saying is that “money is good, therefore actions that net money are good”, is a terrible argument and we can do better than that.

andrewzah··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
“ If you really want an environmental problem to tackle go fight the oil industry killing thousands of animals every day, destroying communities every day, destroying them literally.”

It’s not one or the other. I’m critical of Bitcoin just like I’m critical of other things affecting the environment.

“If you just tax it or try to ban it they’ll just move”

Good. Let them move. Not everything is about acquiring as much money as physically possible. Getting more money out of people is not a tenable argument for whether something is appropriate or not.

Markets are wildly inefficient and do not account for everything. The areas that had low electricity prices were doing just fine for themselves before Bitcoin miners moved in, and will do just fine afterwards. Saying we should allow things because “money” is just sickening. At least come up with a better argument.

andrewzah··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
Sorry, but the above argument is really a poor one.

Just because there’s “no better” use for that electricity (which I disagree), does not justify using it up on bitcoin mining. This is like saying it’s morally permissible to do A because if you don’t, someone else will.

Not to mention conflating “the best use of X people’s time” with “who is giving out the best compensation in a society where we need money”.

The mainstream view -is- positive of Bitcoin. Very few people are actually concerned with the environmental impact.

andrewzah··on Diplomacy: The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
I wish I had known about this game in college. Getting 7 adults together for 8+ hours is nearly impossible now.

I got to play this with 7 people exactly once. It was amazing.

andrewzah··on Activists who embrace nuclear power
That and we can’t displace black people anymore to build national highways thru residential areas. /s

However I do agree. Our politicians prefer to wank over unimportant things instead of working on things that actually would benefit the people. And the government contracting system is horribly broken.

There is no incentive to putting in the hard work to accomplish projects like before.

andrewzah··on Facebook takes down main page of Myanmar military
Hardline stances like this just lose people. C’mon, _no_ benefit whatsoever?

I quit fb around 2015 or so and it bit me when dealing with groups/events and social exchanges. Meetup wasn’t as big and it’s still not as good as fb since less people use it.

Fb marketplace is more useful for me than craiglist usually, but both are good to check.

andrewzah··on Facebook takes down main page of Myanmar military
Well, there is Instagram... also owned by Facebook :-)

I do agree that there isn’t a alternative for fb groups. And marketplace is better than Craigslist in my area.

"And who spends their $236k salary entirely on gas, groceries, utilities, and rent?"

I don't see why the argument is about spending 100% of one's salary. We all spend a percentage of our salaries on things like rent, etc, and that percentage is going to be larger in Seattle than Columbia.

"Making $236k in seattle is going to be much more fruitful than making $115k in whatever flyover place. this argument is always used by people that need to justify living in their boring towns"

Imagine unironically calling towns that aren't Seattle, "boring". Alright, chief. Columbia certainly isn't Chicago (my birthplace), but that doesn't make it boring either. People have their reasons for electing to live in different areas, no need to be condescending about it. Yes, $236k is mathematically higher than $115k, this is no surprise to anyone. However that $115k usually goes a lot further in smaller towns than $236k might in Seattle. ...due to differences in cost of living (and the housing market).

"every cost of living calculator assumes you spend 100% of your paycheck on cost of living. "

Basic googling disproves this. Of the cost of living calculators that I looked at, they just listed basic things like school, transportation, gas, etc, and make comparisons between areas. Nothing saying that you need to spend 100% of your salary.

andrewzah··on Airbnb will build a new tech hub in Atlanta
$236k in Columbia, South Carolina is vastly different than $236k in Seattle. Cost of living calculations are not only not silly, they're essential.

Stock market shares are the same, but things like gas prices, groceries, utilities, and rent are vastly different.

andrewzah··on New Kalashnikov comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and phone sync
I see, I missed that. Either way, I see no real purpose for adding electronics like this to a gun asides from range training tools. It just becomes a liability in a real situation.
andrewzah··on New Kalashnikov comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and phone sync
No, they mentioned entering a "semi-game" niche, which is vague other than maybe targeting groups like airsoft enthusiasts.
andrewzah··on New Kalashnikov comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and phone sync
Why? Other than tracking stats, this seems not useful at all. One of the main selling points of an AK is the rugged durability.. and you want to throw in sensitive electrical components? edit: This is for a shotgun by kalashnikov, not an AK, but my point still stands. Guns need to be reliable.

If a gun doesn't consistently go bang when you pull the trigger (and safety is off, etc), it's completely useless and would better serve as a paperweight.

edit: an external system that integrates with the gun for training purposes would be useful. If I could track shots + accuracy at X yards at the range, that would be very useful. But for a real situation, the last thing I want is something potentially causing an issue with the gun.

One thing to note is that paper breaks technical redstone builds. For redstone parity, Fabric [0] is what we use, along with Phosphor + Lithium + Carpet.
