I'm working on a pebble app- May use this to distribute it until a non crappy pebble store comes out!
andrewroycarter··on Final Term - Terminal Emulator
I agree, this looks really cool! These are the kinds of articles I really like seeing on here, but I feel like people may be discouraged to post these types of things because the top comments are always "Well this sucks because I use X" or "This will never work because Y", or "Didn't Z already do this!?"

Lots of people here are making really cool stuff, and I love hearing about it! Keep it up!

DevOps Developer

Are you a talented server side developer who wants to build best-of-class mobile applications? Do you want to work with talented developers and interact with your clients instead of dealing with project managers? Would you like to see the fruits of your labor out in app stores rather than working on internal, corporate projects that never launch?

Do you enjoy thinking about data in general: how it gets stored, indexed, queried and represented? Want to live on the bleeding edge of the latest App technology, and continuously learn about new frameworks and patterns as they emerge.

If you've answered yes to a few of the above questions, we'd like to talk to you. To be successful at this job you will have a deep understanding of a high-level programming language (preferably Python,
Ruby, Java or PHP), a friendly personality and the ability to work in collaboration with other developers and our clients.

Do any of these apply to you as well?

Expert knowledge of an MVC web-oriented framework like Django, Rails or App Engine. Have experience with any of the following data stores: Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Mango DB. Comfortable on UNIX-type command lines (Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, OSX). Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure vendors (Linode, AWS, Rackspace, Slicehost). Familiarity with Configuration Management systems like Salt, Chef or Puppet. Front-end development experience on any platform that does HTTP calls (iOS, Android, HTML5). Understanding of scalable and highly-available systems. You appreciate being called a hacker. You really love mobile devices.

Web/JavaScript Developer

Are you a talented web developer who wants to build best-of-class web applications for mobile and desktop web? Do you want to work with talented developers and interact with your clients instead of dealing with project managers? Do you want to see the fruits of your labor out in the wild rather than working on internal, corporate projects that never launch?

Do you think JavaScript only gets a bad wrap because most developers don't understand prototypal inheritance? Or maybe you think Compass' image spriting features are the COOLEST THING EVER. Maybe you're one of the few that think they're merely AWESOME.

If you've answered yes to a few of the above questions, we'd love to talk to you. To be successful at this job you will have exceptional JavaScript skills, a friendly personality and the ability to work in collaboration with other developers and our clients.

Do any of these apply to you as well?

You've built something cool using Backbone.js, AngularJS, or some other client-side MV* framework. Know HTML(5) and CSS(3) inside and out. You know Less, SASS or some other CSS preprocessor. Maybe you've even built your own toolkit that sits on top of your preprocessor of choice. You've worked with at least one high-level server-side language. You can clearly articulate why "responsive design" isn't a panacea. You appreciate being called a hacker. You love the web. You really love mobile devices.

andrewroycarter··on Another $1K App on the App Store
I wanted to say this must be an April Fool's thing, but looking at the past price points http://appshopper.com/games/the-fleas-2
andrewroycarter··on From idea to AppStore in 2 weeks
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like because iOS is such a hot platform right now everyone is trying to hop on the bandwagon without learning anything new. Write iOS apps in ObjC. It's not hard, it's not that different, it's just something you don't know yet.

andrewroycarter··on iMessage Should Have a Dead Battery Auto-Responder
This doesn't make any sense at all. iMessage is now tied to my iPhone, my iPad, an iPod Touch, two iMacs, and a Macbook Air. If my iPhone's battery dies, how will Apple know that I'm not in front of another device capable of getting messages?

"One potential reason that Apple wouldn’t implement this feature is that it increases user awareness of dead iPhone batteries" I don't even

andrewroycarter··on A failed bruteforce attack on the EFI PIN lock of a MacBook Pro
I wish there were more posts on HN like this. This is super cool, interesting, and a neat simple solution to a problem, even if it didn't work in the end!
andrewroycarter··on Spotify and Facebook: Is that phishing?
We kind of have a different problem. Clients all want it in the apps we make, but analytics show that very few users use those features. Which sucks because it takes forever to implement all that stuff -_-
andrewroycarter··on Orchestra’s Mailbox app now reservable in the App Store
I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and was able to use my reservation code after I remember I had it. So was my friend! The button to use the code is kind of hard to see
andrewroycarter··on Orchestra’s Mailbox app now reservable in the App Store
And even then, I bet they're using https://developers.google.com/google-apps/gmail/oauth_overvi... which means you could revoke the oauth token at any time from your Google account!
andrewroycarter··on Orchestra’s Mailbox app now reservable in the App Store
If they didn't have push access and servers, how would they let you know when you had new mail? Third party iOS apps can't poll for new mail, so remote notifications are the only way!
andrewroycarter··on Show HN: Super Debugger, a realtime messaging iOS Debugger tool
I'm looking forward to giving this a go at work tomorrow!
andrewroycarter··on Show HN: Super Debugger, a realtime messaging iOS Debugger tool
I'm so tired of all the IB hate. IB is a tool, and it should be used when appropriate. Sure you can't do everything in it, but for 80% of even "complex" views, things can be done significantly faster in IB. Doing all UI creation and layout isn't faster and more "hardcore", it's ignoring a tool that has been around longer than OS X and iOS that was literally made for the job! Have fun maintaining that mess of UI layout code!
andrewroycarter··on iOS Development Tips If You're Just starting Out
100% agree. IB makes for faster development time, easier maintenance, and it's way better for auto layout if you're targeting iOS 6.0
andrewroycarter··on Dear Apple: I give up, WireframeApp will become open source

andrewroycarter··on Has Google Finally Found Its Mobile Design Chops?
I actually don't really like where Google has been going with their iOS apps. They don't look bad, but they don't look / feel like iOS apps. Microsoft and Google both like to try and bring the look and feel of their mobile OS's to their iOS apps, and I wish they would just make iOS apps that look like iOS apps.
andrewroycarter··on Instagram Photos Will No Longer Appear In Twitter Streams At All
This is really interesting- A friend of mine and I have just submitted an app to Apple last friday which allows you to view your twitter streams / twitter searches / etc but only shows tweets with photos. It's looking at the links in the tweets for media, and not the media entities themselves, so it looks like our app will still function correctly (just now tested)! We started making this app before the api 1.1 debacle so I'm interested to see how it'll play out.
andrewroycarter··on Designing for iOS: Taming UIButton
I wish Apple would publish a list of common misconceptions including things like this. I see lots of code where tons of UI drawing is being done that could (and should) be done with images because it's "hardcore" and "fast". But no- it's over complicated and slow!
andrewroycarter··on Valpak coupons: When Passbook finally clicked for me
Well thanks! I was happy with how that turned out! I actually have some cool new features / bug fixes in the works on that project!
