andrewljohnson··on Show HN: Mana Pool – Market for Magic Cards
Here's what's in my deck:

eBay/TCGPlayer/ChannelFireBall (US) CardMarket (Europe) CardTrader (Europe) Facebook Marketplace Amazon, Walmart (low-fee avenue for Magic sellers, some do high volume of sealed packs on these sites)

Thanks for your help with all of these things :)
andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
I am building a marketplace focused 100% on Magic: The Gathering, which I have played for 30 years.

Biggest issues are inventory and buyer-side bugs now. I wished I would have shipped a few months ago, got caught up on a feature I didn't need to engage users.

andrewljohnson··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
That reddit used to be an IRC and before that a usenet. The wheel turns.
andrewljohnson··on Am I the Unethical One?
He's not unethical, just lazy. He should make better tests, and update them every term.

He doesn't need to frame the questions the same way each year.

andrewljohnson··on How much of AI's recent success is due to the Forer Effect?
It’s not more fraught than stack overflow, plus it explains itself, so you can check it’s reasoning and it’s code.
andrewljohnson··on The Leverage of LLMs for Individuals
I use AI to help my productivity while coding a lot. I handle the big system, it spits out code for me where i know what i want but don’t know the libraries/syntax.
andrewljohnson··on Introducing Agents in Haystack: Make LLMs resolve complex tasks
transformers are deterministic (if seeded).
andrewljohnson··on Bing Chat now has ads
It’s faster for coding.
andrewljohnson··on We built an exceedingly polite AI dog that answers questions about your APIs
Mobile was a huge boom for indie development too, across all categories. AI will be the same.
andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: What is your opinion of “unlimited” PTO?
Got it… my vacation allowance depends on my manager’s whims and quarterly peer reviews. Sounds perfect.
andrewljohnson··on Google researcher, long out of math, cracks devilish problem about sets
I always thought of bit boards in the same way, wow moment.
andrewljohnson··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
It's true, but Windows is worse in these adware respects (I have both systems).
andrewljohnson··on What would a “good” WebMD look like?
In the US, the CDC has been really bad at providing health information, and the FDA has been really bad at providing food safety info. They also don’t have incentive alignment (incentives are mostly to grow the bureaucracy and serve careers).

I’d expect private enterprise to eventually converge on better info… eventually consumers will choose services that provide the best info amidst competition.

andrewljohnson··on $250k for your AI-first product startup
Cap sets a valuation cap, say $20M, and the safe converts to equity at the lesser of the cap and the valuation of the later round.
andrewljohnson··on Alex Jones must pay $50m in punitive damages for Sandy Hook hoax claim
InfoWars made $800K in one day, not _per_ day. Jones claims that was their best day ever.

Which makes total sense to me... businesses have huge boom days, and plaintiff lawyers will happily imply you should multiply that figure by 365 days.

andrewljohnson··on How I regained concentration and focus
It seems disrespectful to my wife and the camps to refuse to be available for emergencies.
andrewljohnson··on How I regained concentration and focus
I just can’t… it might be some counselor’s random cell phone calling me. Plus the kids go to many camps per summer, and many activities during the year, so I’d be constantly updating my phone book even if not for the main issue.
andrewljohnson··on How I regained concentration and focus
The issue for me is, for example, my wife drops my kid off for a camp and then the camp calls me in an emergency. So I can’t just only take notifications from known callers.
andrewljohnson··on How I regained concentration and focus
Having a family and responsibilities made this infeasible for me. Most apps on my phone are denied notifications, but people can still text/call me.
andrewljohnson··on I won a suit against a party that sent me an unsolicited text message
To what extent can this be automated? There are apps to fight parking/speeding tickets... could the same be done for little lawsuits to sue spammers?

Maybe a lawyer could comment on feasibility of this.

andrewljohnson··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
There is actually no particular law against insider trading at all, not even related to equities… it’s all securities and wire fraud. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2022-06-02/don-t-...
andrewljohnson··on Show HN: 3D live tracking two climbers attempting a Sierra Nevada record
It depends on how much the ridge goes up and down, and if there are bits you can only ascend with technical climbing.
andrewljohnson··on The new wave of React state management
probably->problem is a typo, and prop drilling is lingo for digging down a large chain of components I think.
andrewljohnson··on Many researchers were not compliant with their published data sharing statement
Tangential to topic, but I have been reading a Newton biography (Never at Rest) recently, and I found it interesting how reliant Newton was on the observations of other scientists. He had correspondence with scientists like Halley and Flamsteed on the basis of getting their observations of comets or observations of the moon, to help him work out orbits.

At one point, Newton was unhappy with Flamsteed, because Flamsteed wanted to work on his star map instead of Newton's moon observations, but Flamsteed said he needed an accurate star map to produce accurate moon observations.

Data sharing has been an issue in science for hundreds of years.

andrewljohnson··on LeekWars, program your AI to destroy your leek enemies
I hear the sound of elevator engineers cracking their knuckles.
andrewljohnson··on 40k coin tosses yield ambiguous evidence for dynamical bias
If you like that book, read the Newton biography "Never at Rest."

Almost certainly Stephenson read it in his research, and he gets the nature of Newton totally correct in fictional form.

andrewljohnson··on Friendships form via shared context, not shared activities
Backpacking was how I spent a lot of time with who turned into my wife and cofounder. It’s fun but can also be slightly stressful at times and you see many aspects of a person. 15 years into our relationship and I felt like we’ve known each other very deeply since the beginning.
andrewljohnson··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
What's the joke, is it an allusion?
andrewljohnson··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
Why do you say this, are you implying there is some danger?
