andrewjrhill··on A 189 Year Old Limitation on Inductor Size Has Been Broken (2018)
To be fair - a 33% reduction in size is massive for something that has remained largely unchanged for the better part of 2 centuries.
andrewjrhill··on Ask HN: Dear open source devs how do you sustain yourself
How did you power the projector? Did you drag a generator into the forest too?

andrewjrhill··on Angular 9.0
> Well-managed react is incomparable in power.

Unfounded opinion.

> Try to make a library like react-three-fiber using Angular, in less than 500lines of code.

react-three-fiber is much bigger than 500 lines of code.

andrewjrhill··on DevDegree: Work at Shopify and get a free CS degree in parallel
This is so great. I would have preferred to do something like this when I was fresh out of High School instead of going the traditional route of studying full-time or immediately entering the workforce.
andrewjrhill··on Rescuers race to save 14k sheep on capsized cargo ship
Are you trolling or do you genuinely believe the trade and transport of livestock is the same as human slavery? The mind boggles.
andrewjrhill··on Humans placed in suspended animation for the first time
I'd hardly call that a discussion...
andrewjrhill··on The Rise of 'Facadism' in London
I live in Oslo and I am genuinely shocked at the quality of construction here - so many corners are cut it is insane. They are not cheap either - we're talking 15k to 25k NOK per month.

My offices are in a beautiful modern well known office district / tourist hotspot and just yesterday one of the doorframes fell off the wall in the kitchen.

My own apartment is 90sqm, modern and in a well known central "expensive" part of town, was built only a few years ago, and the floor is so noticeably slanted that my bedroom cupboard door will slide open on its own from time to time.

The floorboards (whilst stunning) feel like they are built on-top of roots and boulders - the cement was clearly not levelled properly before the boards were placed.

I put a level on the kitchen counter and the bubble is obviously not centered.

On more than one occasion I have viewed apartments in Oslo where the master bedroom is so small that the property owners have to put a door on either side of the bed so you don't have to step over the bed to get out of the room. These apartments were also in the 20k NOK range.

1 in 10 apartments have ceiling lights. Apparently Norwegians really like standing lamps?

andrewjrhill··on Some Blizzard employees are dreading BlizzCon
They could have just made a Diablo or StarCraft universe MMO (or both) and people would lose their minds and sell their kidneys to pay for a monthly subscription...
andrewjrhill··on How bullying may shape adolescent brains
Can confirm about it being the odd one out. As one of maybe 5 white kids in my very poor school, I was bullied relentlessly from 6 to 12 years old. I was quite an effeminate kid too with long blonde hair. Soft, quiet and not nearly as athletic as the other kids. They were ruthless both verbally and physically. I'm now 29 years old, 6'4", 90kg and I lift 4x a week and _still_ have gddmn self confidence issues.

I am considering taking up martial arts in an attempt to break this subconscious mindset which I am almost positive was caused by years of bullying as a child.

andrewjrhill··on Building a Dark Web Crawler in Go
Programs like https://www.hacksplaining.com/ exist purely as educational programs that teach you to exploit known flaws in web security and have no issue with the law.
andrewjrhill··on Reconstructing Denisovan Anatomy Using DNA Methylation Maps
I can't believe I have never heard of this before. This is incredible work.
andrewjrhill··on FAA Bans Recalled Apple Laptops from Flights
Do you know how likely your TV remote is to explode? I doubt it. Knowing how likely it is that the products you buy may or may not defect requires much more than "a minimum awareness about your own possessions."

andrewjrhill··on The new Dropbox
I audibly "ughed" when they introduced that stupid dropbox floating action button in Office 365.
andrewjrhill··on The new Dropbox
It's a lack of focus on increasing sales throughput. They should have looked to resolve bottlenecks between when a lead first hits their website and when a sale is finalised.

There's always something along that process that is poor and holding back the rest of the process. An increase in throughput = increased sales.

andrewjrhill··on A Swede who created a $400K Indiegogo-scam

I assume this is a typo? Or did a blanket raise almost a billion dollars?

andrewjrhill··on Dyson to make electric cars from 2020
> Will it even look like a car as we know it?

If he he hopes for any sort of market adoption it will have to look like a car as we know it. You can still make some changes here and there that push boundaries - but ultimately people want whats familiar more than unfamiliar.

andrewjrhill··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack

andrewjrhill··on Ask HN: Best business advice for software developers
You are 100% correct - I have no kids and have the luxury of not having major life commitments blocking my ability to do these things.
andrewjrhill··on Ask HN: Best business advice for software developers
Not only that but adequate sleep, regular exercise and healthy eating contribute enormously towards healthier cognition. As a developer, I tend to find myself far more productive and successful in a shorter period of time when I am living on the healthy side of things. Everything that is me just works better when I go for a run three days a week, eat clean foods and get in a solid 8 hours of rest a night.
