andrelayer··on Ask HN: Any hardware startups here?
I built a healthier men's dress shoe with a faux heel that allows you to walk barefoot while still maintaining a professional silhouette. https://OAKAStudio.com.

Footwear is the most technical and health detrimental part of our wardrobe.

andrelayer··on Alarmed by Tesla’s self-driving test, state legislators demand answers from DMV
There is the argument that they are already safer than human drivers though and it'd be morally objectionable to stop. Not saying I'm completely on that side, but it is a valid utilitarian argument.
andrelayer··on Ask HN: Do you have a process or a framework to learn specific skills quickly?
Work very hard, every day for weeks, months and years until you get it right; then work even longer until you can't get it wrong. I've found that to be the "secret".

I think a lot of people in this discussion are pitting the argument at people prioritizing their individual choices over the collective health of the community. I think that is a very singular framing from one side. A lot of people I know just believe that the virus itself is not as deadly as the reaction warrants. The infectious mortality rate of Covid is at best twice that of the normal flu, which isn't nothing and warrants action but probably not 40M people unemployed and possible national depression. The fact is if your under 30 you have a better chance of being hit by lightning then dying of Covid. It's pretty rational for someone to understand that and make personal choices without feeling like they're causing real danger to the community.

"I think it's ridiculous just because it clearly involved a lot of effort to solve a problem that doesn't really need solving. "

I suspect something similar was said by the horse owner the first time they saw a car.

andrelayer··on How startup Fab died
I really don't consider Jason a bad CEO. He was incentivized heavily to go big along with everyone else. He made a plan to get there, a plan I actually think was the best route to try and get to $10B. It just didn't work, doesn't mean it still wasn't the best plan.
andrelayer··on How startup Fab died
I was employee #30 something at Fab and had a decently unique vantage point for a while. I would say the problem was one of ambition. We had a working $100M company, however Jason and all of the investors decided that that was not enough and that we needed to be a $10 Billion company. I actually don't see that much wrong with this, it's just a bet they all bought into and they all were smart enough to understand the risks. The bet failed. Simple as that.
andrelayer··on What should I do about YouTube?
Artists go where the fans are, and they're all on Youtube.
andrelayer··on What should I do about YouTube?
That's a good idea that could probably solve the release it to different services at different times issue, but it still doesn't split the exposure of Youtube from its forced monetization that she's having an issue with.
andrelayer··on How I Crashed and Burned in Y Combinator
The only part you're missing is that PG has said many times in the past that they invest mostly in the team and that many teams that go through YC end up changing their idea slightly or completely. So the beginning of this situation doesn't seem very unusual, just that they never actually figured it out.

andrelayer··on Bitcoin over Tor isn't a good idea
This is why something like Darkcoin should exist. It fixes one of Bitcoin's biggest issues, anonymity.

andrelayer··on Show HN: TruckPlease – Moving sucks, so we decided to make it easier
Unpakt.com is pretty good for this, though they index only professional moving companies. You enter the general stuff you're going to move and they compare prices across a bunch of providers.
