andrekandre··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess

  > then they rewrote it
they keep doing this, and everything gets worse for it; i remember when they rewrite mDNSResponder and internet connectivity went to hell... and the ux in system preferences is atrocious... just text labels and lists everywhere, no attention to detail.

the people who built/designed/managed the rollout osx and nextstep were a totally different breed imo

andrekandre··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free

  > fuck barrel? How about we just not have it?
yes, i agree with this. the context of my answer was n the even we have to have an appstore at all; personally i'd rather download an app from a website (and signed with their certificate, for example) than slog through a 'store'
andrekandre··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free

  > So an intervention would just be anti-consumer?
maybe? but you are paying for it with you data and usage, you just don't realize it (in addition to being subsequently manipulated by it); that could also probably considered anti-consumer imho...

  > but people wouldn’t use it.
yep, thats right. thats why i think having a price signal where the actual cost is upfront; now you don't discover later your data is being used against you as a "cost" but consider upfront 'do i really wanna pay for this or do something else' etc

said in another way, i feel like giving the customer upfront knowledge about what something actually costs is more pro-consumer because now we can make informed choices

andrekandre··on There is more to code review than (automatable) detection
performance reviews are also a great time to find a scapegoat as well
andrekandre··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
they overwhelmingly use it because its free, but if they even had to pay one cent i'd bet they'd loose half their customers and start shopping around on different metrics of quality

making things free causes a loss of price signal, so i'd say it would be a good idea to restore that...

andrekandre··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs

  > Just a bunch of people who treat the codebase as a black box, pump out slop, and call it a day when the feature works?
my guess is yes, because that is what i am seeing today in front of me with new grads

  > Or, AI will actually get good enough that vibe coding is better in every case than mindful development. I guess the main factor is how long it takes for that to happen.
i think there is a limit to this; you could train an llm to never dereference a null pointer or something like that, and you could probably minimize other security related stuff, but in the end its a token predictor, so you stuck with probabilities... i wouldn't vibe anything that had any security/legal/user related things but thats just me.
andrekandre··on Promising discoveries about the potential for life on one of Saturn’s icy moons

  > Seriously want to know what people really think...
(in a vacuum) i think we would all be saying thats amazing and fundamentally change the way we see ourselves and place in the universe (science fiction becomes science fact) and open new possibilities for research and discoveries

  > find "life". So? Why is this important to people?
when there are more down-to-earth problems right in front of us, i get this as well; why not use that money to fund free college for a couple years for all citizens etc etc
andrekandre··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
that is to say, you have to be a good dev first and foremost, and no matter how much harnessing you do there is gonna be a limit to the quality of output by the user (otherwise why not just use a no-code tool instead)

(the ironic thing is tho, people starting out with just llms will probably never progress to 'good dev' in the first place...)

andrekandre··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
are you a well known business or submitting your very first app? its anecdotal, but it seems to me from experience at a couple companies is that apple/google are quick to review even new apps from established companies...
andrekandre··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free

  > but still use the services because of free/cheap/etc
it may be a crazy idea, but if they ever made a law that said 'free trial not withstanding, services must be payed for and not free' i wonder if that would fix the issue real fast...

(of course a side effect might be that half the economy implodes but thats besides the point ^^)

andrekandre··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free

  > and we have still a third that's offering premium features to users with cash to spend and leaves everyone else out in the cold
but at least we would know where to go for trust and safety? isn't that better than now where its just a crapshoot with no alternative?

(this is putting aside wetter we should even need 'appstores')

andrekandre··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners

  > You don't have a automatic right to live in another country in my opinion.
its true, and thats how things are (legally anyways) but taking that further sometimes i wonder why its okay to freely move from region a to region b inside a country?

wouldn't the same logic apply to people from say east germany moving to the west? or 'annoying liberals' from california moving to north carolina? yes they can add to the local tax base, but if we want to keep things fair we should probably move to restrict everyone to stay in their own places if thats the logic we are following... but maybe i'm not thinking deeply enough...

andrekandre··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners

  > foreigners are poorly behaved tourists, investors developing land and municipal issues with short-term residents
they could directly target them, i wonder why not?
andrekandre··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
because of outsourcing?
andrekandre··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
the other issue is, there are lots of people who work and help out in the countryside where cost of living (and hence wages) are very low and forcing them to be above the whole average of the county is a bit onerous i think.

probably a better idea is average for the prefecture they live in, but i guess they want to simplify things or discourage ppl from moving to the countryside? idk; most people are in tokyo/osaka to be sure...

andrekandre··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners

  > The real cause is the failure of Abenomics and the resulting weak yen
i think you are right, there is a lot of over-tourism (and from some places 'rude' tourists that are really aggravating to people) but that is also being caused by weak yen in the end...

whats the saying? everything is downstream from economics?

andrekandre··on Alan Kay: Shannon gave us a way of dealing with noisy channels [video]
that also rings true, as someone who has had to deal with mvc in various forms; its all so complicated, and views as watchers is exactly what i'd want

slight digression, but i feel like alot of the want for using llms for coding is because people are tired of dealing with all the complexity of implementing things that should be simple and easy; like llms are a crutch for complexity we are drowning in and people just want to "throw it at the llm" and be done with it...

andrekandre··on What even is an OS now?

so your... warming it up?
andrekandre··on Alan Kay: Shannon gave us a way of dealing with noisy channels [video]

  > Computing is held back by corporate legacy, and PARC was lucky to build all its own hardware and software.
this really resonates... apple makes both the hardware and software, is massively profitable and yet swift is basically a much much better c++ in a lot of ways. and xcode is just totally absurd excuse of a development environment...

is it better than before and welcome improvement? yes, but fundamentally conservative compared to what parc was doing with much much less...

andrekandre··on What About Rails?

  > It's a tool, dude. Relax.
it has been my observation, in the short years i have worked in tech, that some people really worship technology like religion/god and think it alone will solve all the worlds problems (hint, it wont)
andrekandre··on What About Rails?
this whole shove chatbots into everything trend will get reversed or watered-down after a couple years like all the other trends

most of the time, a bad (or non-existent) ui is responsible for even a need of a chatbot; its lazy (and i say this a someone who was forced to implement a chatbot!) from a product design perspective.

that being said, could some complex apps benefit from adding both a command-line style interface to 'pop open the hood' so-to-speak for advanced users and provide a chat interface for beginners as well? yea why not?

andrekandre··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
once these books have all been scanned and destroyed, doesn't it mean later competitors (and free-as-in-foss alternatives) wont ever be able to catch up?

  > If the labs end up with only 1-2 models ahead of the others, while spending 10x more than last year, that can only go on for so long. There just isn’t enough money in the world!
intuitively (to me anyways) isn't this one big reason why the top companies are putting out signals to slow down frontier development? its getting to costly and hurting chances of turning a profit come ipo time?
andrekandre··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly

  > all that remains is the ugliness of stupid power

andrekandre··on What Sun got wrong
i mean, imagine if your a business and suddenly you had to expense > $200 a month for every employee just to run a compiler, or you could just buy a computer and use it for everything else and that as well…

i think llms will be the same.

n=1 but at $work they are forcing us off enterprise and on to personal claude max that caps at $200 and people are like “you don’t need the top end models anyways just use the cheaper one for coding”, which begs the question how long till those “good enough” models run locally (with relative ease) and our company can cut that huge monthly cost with just the macbook pro they are gonna buy anyways.
